Downtown Comes Alive As Patio Season Brings Diners Outside For The Summer

Patio season is ramping up with the installation of expanded patio areas and new pedestrian space for people visiting the downtown.

The City has completed the installation of decorative fencing and planter boxes next to businesses on George, Water and Charlotte streets that have signed up for the expanded patios this year, using on-street parking in front of their businesses.

The patio season changes also means that Hunter Street between George and Aylmer streets has become a one-lane, one-way street westbound to add more patio and pedestrian space.

As part of the reconfiguration of the section of Hunter Street, Chambers Street is temporarily closed at its south end at Hunter Street and will be two-way for the duration of the closure.

This is the third summer that the City is putting in place temporary changes to downtown public space to allow for more patio and pedestrian area. This year’s design is similar to last year’s successful design, except for one change: Charlotte Street between George Street and Aylmer Street North is remaining a two-lane, two-way street this year.

In other areas of the downtown, expanded patios are put into on-street parking spaces next to businesses that choose to participate in the program.

Beyond the COVID-19 pandemic public health considerations, providing additional outdoor space for downtown businesses and visitors is another way to support businesses that are recovering from the disruptions caused by the pandemic, says the City.

For a second year, the City will coordinate the the Renaissance on Hunter public art project. This project allows successful, local artists to complete murals on Hunter Street. The Road Mural and Artists' Gardens projects are expected to be in place by early July, weather permitting.

The City of Peterborough consulted with Peterborough Public Health and Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area through the design and implementation of the temporary downtown public space changes.

High Water On the Severn, Trent and Otonabee Rivers Warns Parks Canada

Expect higher-than-normal water levels and flows on the Severn, Trent and Otonabee Rivers during navigation hours until further notice from Parks Canada announced on Thursday night.

File Photo.

Flows will increase outside of navigation hours at Lock 1 - Trenton to Lock 27 – Young’s Point as of Thursday until further notice. These flows are considered non-navigable according to Parks Canada.

The increased flows overnight are the result of water management dam adjustments to address the higher than normal water levels caused by the recent precipitation.

Over the past week, the watersheds have received 50 - 100 mm of rain which significantly exceeds the normal precipitation in June. The last 25 days have seen precipitation values in excess of 50-75 per cent above normal.

Residents and visitors should exercise extreme caution around and on the water.

Peterborough’s Waste Diversion Program Wins Gold At Municipal Waste Association Conference

The City of Peterborough has won gold at the recent 2022 Municipal Waste Association Conference.

Photo courtesy of The City of Peterborough.

The City, through its Waste Diversion program, was presented the Gold Promotion and Education Award for its posters on public space receptacles that provide helpful advice on recyclables.

Bright, eye-catching posters designed to be easy to read for residents, were placed on 56 garbage and recycling bins located along trails and parks throughout the City. The goal was to make it easier for residents and visitors to put materials into the proper bin, thereby reducing contamination in the bins and maximizing the value of the recyclables that the City’s contractor sells to buyers for reuse.

The annual Promotion and Education Awards program is a way to celebrate the creativity and ingenuity of municipalities across Ontario to reduce waste and improve recycling. The award category was open to all Ontario municipalities and the City of Peterborough’s campaign was deemed the best in Ontario.

As part of its update the Waste Management Master Plan, the City is currently collecting public input regarding proposed initiatives that include requiring clear bags for garbage collection and changing the frequency of waste collection to improve efficiency.

Residents are asked to share their input by completing the survey online at www.connectptbo.ca/wasteplan2022 or by calling 705-742-7777 ext.1724.
