Peterborough Public Health Says Receiving A Fourth Dose Of COVID-19 Vaccine Is A Personal Choice

Amid the 7th wave of COVID, Dr. Thomas Piggott with Peterborough Pubic Health, has issued a statement noting young and healthy individuals have a personal decision to make about receiving their 4th dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

On Wednesday the Ontario Government announced that eligibility for COVID-19 second booster doses now applied to anyone over 18.

In a press conference on Thursday Dr. Piggott announced that while fourth doses are most critical for older adults or those with medical conditions, those who are younger (18-59) and healthy now have a personal decision to make about receiving their fourth dose.

“We are yet again into a new COVID-19 wave in this continued pandemic,” said Dr. Piggott. “We know that staying up-to-date with your COVID-19 vaccines is the best tool for protecting yourself and those around you from the COVID-19 virus. If you are 12 or older and haven’t had your third dose, it is strongly recommended for you.”

Dr. Piggott noted that in addition to vaccines, other preventions include continuing to wear a tightly fitting (KN95/N95 style) mask, staying home when sick and gathering in well ventilated indoor air spaces or outdoors. He also encouraged residents to check the Local COVID-19 Risk Index weekly.

Electric City Football Club Men's Team Remains Undefeated at Home With 3-3 Draw

With the home undefeated streak on the line, the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) men’s team kept that intact but in the worst way possible as they drew 3-3 to Burlington SC on Wednesday night.

Electric City struck early as striker Jordan Brown scored in the third minute, marking his team-leading eighth goal of the season. He received a leading pass, beating a Burlington defender and then keeper Brandon Kerr to put ECFC on the board 1-0.

Ethan Gopaul quickly tacked on a second goal after ECFC forced a turnover in the offensive zone. Brown made the assist to a sprinting Gopaul to make it 2-0 in the tenth minute, his third of the season.

ECFC kept the pressure going with another Jordan Brown goal in the 31st minute to make it 3-0 into the second half. The goal came as he received a sideline pass and dashed through the middle of the defence and chipped it over the keeper.

“The movement, the patience and buildup and exploring the spaces they wanted to give us, I think we executed well and we took advantage of the chances we were able to create,” said Randy Ribeiro, ECFC head coach regarding the first half.

Burlington looked like a completely different team according to Ribeiro in the second half as they broke the shutout almost immediately. They quickly got on the board in the 47th minute thanks to Augustus Oku, beating ECFC keeper Quillan Roberts high.

The visitors struck again after being awarded a penalty kick. Oku netted his second of the game after he was able to beat Roberts again with a shot through the middle to close the gap 3-2 in the 62nd minute.

Brown almost got a hat trick with a header right in front of the keeper but was deflected wide in the 70th minute.

ECFC Defender Caden Rogozinski almost sealed the game with a header off a corner kick however it bounced off the ground and over the net to keep it a one-goal lead.

In extra time, ECFC fouled Burlington which resulted in a second penalty kick. Several ECFC players were protesting the call but it stood.

Oku completed the hat trick, beating Roberts’s right side to tie the match and come back from a 3-0 deficit. The whistle blew immediately after ECFC kicked off after the game-tying goal.

“We haven't been great in second halves,” said Jordan Webb, ECFC winger. “We had a hard time controlling the game so I guess we got to look at film and see how to get better with that.”

“We just have to continue to maintain consistent performances,” said Ribeiro. “We have to continue preparing and training well like we have been week in and week out and showing up on game day and being able to put on performances to collect maximum points. We can only control the games that we play in and we got to make sure we take care of business moving forward."

The men’s team goes on the road against North Mississauga SC this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The women will have their last home game of the season on the same day against BVB IA Waterloo at 3 p.m. at Fleming College.

Ontarians Aged 18+ Eligible for Second Booster Shot

The Ontario government is expanding eligibility for second booster doses to Ontarians aged 18 and over, announced on Wednesday.

File Photo.

Beginning on Thursday at 8 a.m., eligible individuals can book an appointment through the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900.

Eligible individuals can also book an appointment directly through public health units that use their own booking systems, through Indigenous-led vaccination clinics and participating pharmacies. Appointments are based on availability, which may vary by region.

Second booster doses are being offered at an interval of five months after an individual receives their first booster dose.

In a press release, the Ontario Government stated that while most individuals aged 18 to 59 years old will continue to have strong protection more than six months after their first booster dose, expanding second booster dose eligibility will ensure that Ontarians can make an informed decision based on their personal circumstances.

A new bivalent COVID-19 vaccine is anticipated to be approved by Health Canada this fall, which may offer more targeted protection against the Omicron variants. Ontarians are encouraged to speak with their health care provider about whether getting a second booster dose now is right for them.

As part of the province’s plan to stay open, Ontario is expanding Ontario’s health care workforce, shoring-up domestic production of critical supplies and investing more than $40 billion for over 50 major hospital projects that will bring over 3,000 new hospital beds. Since the start of the pandemic, the province has added over 8,600 health care professionals to the health care system with programs in place to recruit thousands more.

The first game begins on Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Ted Reeve Community Arena in Toronto. The Lakers finished the OJLL regular season in seventh place, with a 10-10 record.

Full Schedule:

  • Game 1 - Thur., July 14 - Ted Reeves Community Arena

  • Game 2 - Fri., July 15 - Ted Reeves Community Arena

  • Game 3 - Mon., July 18 - Peterborough Memorial Centre

  • Game 4 (if necessary) - Tue., July 19 - Peterborough Memorial Centre

  • Game 5 (if necessary) - Wed., July 20 - Ted Reeves Community Arena

Coach and current Century 21 Laker Robert Hope says he is not worried about his team's chances heading into the first round.

“I have full confidence in our team and the players in our room. We have to play the right way and do the little things that add up to wins in playoffs,” he said. “We need every player on board to make sure they do their job. Every team is good in playoffs moving forward. It’s all about our team and how we play.”

The Lakers won four of their last six games entering the playoffs with three players landing on the league's top 20 scoring list.

The league-leading Mimico Mountaineers and the third-ranked Whitby Warriors are the only two other squads in the 11-team league with the same honour.

Zach Thompson, who played in all 20 regular season games this summer, finished with 31 goals and 86 points. He finished sixth in league scoring and fourth in assists with 55.

DJ Clark missed five games this season for school commitments but still landed himself at 15th-best in league scoring with 28 goals and 37 assists (65 points) in 15 games played.

Owen Hiltz ranked 17th in points with 26 goals and 36 assists (62 pts) in 14 games played.

“Those three had a great regular season but that is behind us now. It’s all about what you are going to do in playoffs,” said Hope. “We need those players to be leaders and play their role to make the team successful.”
