Connor Lockhart's Hat Trick Propels Peterborough Petes In 5-4 Win, Regular-Season Champion Ottawa 67's Eliminated

The Peterborough Petes have knocked off the regular-season champion Ottawa 67’s in a nail-biting game six with a 5-4 win and won the series 4-2 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Monday night.

The Petes have yet to lose two consecutive playoff games and lose at home this postseason. Photo courtesy of Kenneth Andersen and the Peterborough Petes.

The Petes got rolling in the first as Owen Beck knocked down a puck in the offensive zone, passed to Chase Stillman who made a spinning backhand pass to Connor Lockhart for a one-timer goal to make it 1-0. Peterborough continued their offense as two minutes later, Brennan Othmann fed Avery Hayes another one-timer to make it 2-0. Ottawa was able to get one before the period’s end as Gavin Ewles ripped one from the high slot through traffic for a 2-1 game.

It was all Peterborough in the second period as Beck found Lockhart on a saucer pass from an odd-man rush and the latter was able to chip it backhanded, beating Ottawa goaltender Max Donoso to make it 3-1 Petes. Peterborough went right back on the attack as 30 seconds later, Jonathan Melee and the Petes with an outnumbered attack ripped it past Donoso to extend Peterborough’s lead to 4-1.

Lockhart continued where he left off as he completed the hat trick in the first minute of the third. Lockhart tried to feed Stillman for a one-timer but a spectacular save was made by backup goalie Collin MacKenzie but the rebound went back to Lockhart for his third of the game. Ottawa would not go quietly however much like game five, scoring four goals in the third period and erasing a three-goal deficit. In just under five minutes, Derek Smyth, Vinzenz Rohrer and Luca Pinelli scored to make it 5-4. The Petes were able to hang on this time and defeat Ottawa, eliminating the regular-season champions in six games. This is the Petes’s first Conference Championship since 2016-17.

Lockhart, Stillman and Beck were awarded three starts of the game.

Tickets for the Conference Championship go on sale Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. through the Grant Thornton Box Office. Peterborough will play the winner between the North Bay Battalion and the Barrie Colts who play game seven on Tuesday night.

Since 2004, United Way Peterborough & District has celebrated and recognized outstanding volunteer contributions to the City and County of Peterborough through the annual Scholfield Award of Community Distinction. The award was established to recognize an individual or organization who, through their excellent leadership or outstanding contribution has demonstrated the ability to mobilize positive change within our community.

In 2004, Paul and Ina Scholfield were the first recipients of this award. The Scholfield’s have been long-time philanthropists and community builders– through their generosity and commitment, they lead by example, typifying the spirit of community building.

The 2022 recipients of this award, Jim and Katie Stewart, were chosen for their achievement, commitment and leadership in addressing community needs and issue, the impact of their efforts, their innovative approaches and success in mobilizing members of the community. They were put forth as candidates for this year’s award through an incredibly heartfelt nomination package, that was hand-delivered to the United Way Office by nominator Anne Marshall of Elmhirst’s Resort, containing 12 signed letters of support and further endorsements by 30 community leaders.

“Volunteers are a diverse group of people who create a ripple effect of inspiration and generosity. We are thrilled to honour those who go above and beyond in their contribution to building a strong, diverse and healthy community,” said Jim Russell, United Way Peterborough & District CEO.

The Scholfield Award is open to any resident or organization within the boundaries of the City and County of Peterborough. Nominees are evaluated based on their achievement, commitment and leadership in addressing community needs or issues; the impact of their efforts; their innovative, unique or exemplary approach; and their success in mobilizing members of our community.

Nominations close at 4 p.m. on June 8, and the award will be presented later in the year. Nomination forms can be found online.

Tastely Box Launches Peterborough's First Rolled Ice Cream

Peterborough can enjoy a new treat as Tastely Box launched the sale of their newest creamy confection, rolled ice cream on Saturday.

Customers can also get slab-style ice cream as well as rolled during the candy shop’s new launch. Photo courtesy of Tastely Box.

The dessert originated in Thailand as street food in 2009. It is made by pouring a milk and cream mixture over a cold stainless steel pan that freezes it into ice cream. A choice of sauces, mix-ins and toppings are added to the mixture so customers can customize their ice cream. After being slathered and chopped, it is scraped into rolls and served in a cup.

“We like to focus on international options but make a twist on them,” explained Polly Laneville, Tastely Box co-owner. “We decided to do rolled ice cream because we knew that it was something fun to bring to Peterborough and the community plus it tastes really awesome.”

Customers can choose from a vanilla or chocolate base and have it rolled or in a slab. They can choose up to two sauces that include salted caramel, chocolate, cookie butter, cotton candy and bubblegum. A mix-in and topping also get added into the mix for a variety of combinations.

Laneville says that her store has incorporated freeze-dried candy into her rolled ice cream as an available option for toppings. It is something that she’s never seen other places do outside of freeze-dried strawberries. This is her own way of incorporating her shop’s uniqueness and twists into her products.

“We're trying to focus on doing freeze-dried Skittles, we have freeze-dried Milk Duds, freeze-dried caramel and different things like that just to make it a little bit more fun and crunchy,” said Laneville.

The store also launched their Pick’N’Mix in addition to their rolled ice cream. Customers can fill a tub to their heart’s content with gummies, marshmellows and other candies. There were 19 different selections to choose from on the day’s launch.

Some candy included in the Pick’N’Mix were gummy green apples, shrimp marhsmellows and sour keys. Photo by David Tuan bui.

Tastely Box is located at 651 Chamberlain St., Unit 1 and is open from Tuesday to Friday at 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Photos: AON Inc. Hosts Open House to Four Retirement Homes After Four-Year Hiatus

AON Inc’s four retirement homes properties hosted their open house after a four-year hiatus on Saturday afternoon.

All four properties, Princess Gardens, Canterbury Gardens, Empress Gardens and Royal Gardens, held open houses from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to showcase their facilities to potential residents.

“I'm absolutely thrilled to be back to doing what we did before the pandemic,” said Heather Young, Canterbury Gardens executive director. “We're very involved in the community. We host events quite regularly and we have people in our homes and we're able to show our beautiful homes. We do fundraisers and different endeavours. Today is really about getting back to that and showing the public our homes again and being able to get back to normal.”

The open houses were filled with live entertainment, catering, dancing, recreation, free draws and tours to showcase what the retirement homes had.

“Those who came and joined us during the pandemic really have no idea just exactly what we do and how we do it so this is really exciting for them as well,” explained Young. “This is the first time they're being exposed to what we do normally when we're able to do it. To get out there and to have events and have fun and have entertainment so it's really nice for the people that didn't know how we did things to join us.”
