23-Year-Old Courtice Man Facing Multiple Charges After Fleeing Police and Getting In a Collision

A 23-year-old, Courtice man is facing multiple charges after a collision in Peterborough on Monday evening.

At roughly 9:40 p.m., a general patrol officer in the George Street and Dalhousie Street area spotted a truck squealing its tires in a parking lot. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled. Police did not pursue the vehicle due to public safety. Police received a call regarding a two-vehicle collision at George and Rink Street shortly after that involved the fleeing driver.

The suspect was transported to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment of minor injuries and released. 

He has been charged with the following:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol

  • Operation while impaired - Blood alcohol (80 mg plus)

  • Flight from police- Class G1 licence holder - unaccompanied by qualified driver

  • Careless driving – Highway Traffic Act

  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero - HTA

  • Driver failed to wear seat belt properly - HTA

The accused was released on an Undertaking and will appear in court on Aug. 8.

Local Community Builder Reaches Milestone Podcast About Community Members; Records 100th Episode

Local community builder Ken John Jones and his podcast ‘Jonesy’s Corner Podcast’ focusing on Peterborough and the Kawarthas community members has reached its 100th milestone podcast with Pete Dalliday.

Jones recorded his 100th episode at the PTBOCanada studio with Dalliday as they reflected on highlights of his podcast. Jones had guests such as musician Irish Millie, MP Michelle Ferrari, The Wolf’s Brian Ellis and more.

Jones began his podcast in the spring of last year as a way to highlight Peterborough’s prominent community members during hard times.

“During the pandemic, this was an opportunity to bring the community together as one to bring and show positivity during the rough times,” he explained.

He said Dalliday’s HometownPTBO segments with PTBOCanada was an inspiration for behind his podcast. Jones wants to set an example for those wishing to have their own podcast and encourages those to chair their dreams.

Don’t give up on your dreams keep reaching for the stars,” explained Jones. “Dreams can come true.”

Jones had helped build his community builder status by helping local non-profit organizations such as Alternatives Community Program Services Peterborough, Cuddles for Cancer and Kawartha Food Share through promotional or fundraising efforts.

The rewarding part is that the podcast give people an opportunity to share their story, share their experiences in all kinds of employment fields and to raise awareness for charity events, non-profit organizations and community builders,” explained Jones. “100 is an milestone and it wouldn’t be possible without the community support and my family.”

PVNC Seeking Candidates for City of Peterborough Trustee Board Position

The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board are seeking candidates for a Catholic Trustee position and fill a Board vacancy and represent separate school ratepayers for the City of Peterborough.

The appointed trustee will serve until the end of the current term of office in November 2026.

 Applicants to fill the vacant seat must be:

  • A Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age; and residing within the jurisdiction of the Board. 

  • A baptized and practicing Roman Catholic, who is shown as an English-language Roman Catholic school supporter on the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) form.

  • Not an employee of the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, or any other district school board, or school authority in Ontario.

Candidates do not have to reside within the City of Peterborough to be considered.

Catholic Trustee applicants are invited to submit an application package including the following:

  • A cover letter

  • A curriculum vitae outlining personal and professional experience

Applications must be submitted to the Director’s Office via email to trusteeapplications@pvnccdsb.on.ca by 4 p.m. on Aug. 31.

Selected candidates will be contacted and asked to make a brief presentation to Trustees at a special in-camera Board meeting in September, indicating their interest in serving as a Trustee for our Board and their dedication to Catholic education according to the application.

Canadian Rapper Classified To Hit Peterborough Musicfest For This Saturday

Peterborough Musicfest is bringing the rap scene into its music lineup as multi-awarded Canadian rapper Classified is scheduled to perform at Del Crary Park this Saturday.

Classified hit the music scene in 1995. The Nova Scotia-born rapper has 18 studio albums. He has worked with some of the world’s most prominent hip hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, Raekwon and Maestro Fresh Wes. His music has amassed more than 200 million streams globally.

The artist has received 24 major award nominations, with eight wins between the Juno Awards, East Coast Music Awards and MuchMusic Video Awards.

His 2013 self-titled album debuted at number one on the Canadian Nielsen Soundscan Chart with the single ‘Inner Ninja’ earning a Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year.

Lakefield Installs Pride Crosswalk at Queen Street at Reid Street Intersection

An all-inclusive Pride crosswalk has been installed on Queen Street at Reid Street in Lakefield to demonstrate and promote inclusivity, diversity and belonging within the Selwyn Township, announced on Monday.

The crosswalk celebrates the 2SLGBTQ+ community within Selwyn Township and all of Peterborough County throughout the year according to a press release. It continues to state that it will serve as a reminder to support, respect and welcome everyone to Peterborough County not just during Pride Month but year-round.  

“The Township of Selwyn continues to be a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming place for everyone to visit and live,” said Sherry Senis, Selwyn mayor. “No matter who you are, you are safe, valued and welcomed in our community.” 

“I am pleased to see that the newly designated All-Inclusive Pride Crosswalk has been placed at a busy intersection in the heart of the Lakefield community for visitors, newcomers, residents, and especially our 2SLGBTQ+ friends and family to see this summer,” said Bonnie Clark, Peterborough Country warden. “We must continue with intentional acts of inclusivity such as this to demonstrate our commitment to welcoming all people to our communities.”

First-Ever Little Lakers Night Set for July 27 With During Lakers Final Home Game

The welcome mat is being rolled out by the Peterborough Lakers for their Little Lakers Lacrosse Night and Five Counties families for July 27.

Five Counties Children’s Centre (FCCC) is teaming up with the Peterborough Lakers for the first-ever Little Lakers Night on the team’s final regular season home game on July 27 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre against the Brooklin L.C.

“Five Counties has played a big role throughout the years in our family,” says Len Powers, a FCCC ambassador and Lakers’ board member. “We are really grateful for the work the Centre does to support kids and their families in our community and were excited to find a fun way to give back.”

Little Lakers Night features the following:

  • Pre-game festivities starting at 7 p.m. – an hour before game time. Five Counties is holding a silent auction that lets people bid on items that include: a golf package for four at Wildfire Golf Club, a baby gift basket and tickets to Canada’s Wonderland.

  • Facepainting for kids by donation, sale of freezies and the chance to buy commemorative Little Lakers Night T-shirts in support of Five Counties.

  • A ceremonial ball drop before the game, featuring Five Counties family and representatives.

The proceeds support the Building Abilities for Life campaign, allowing more kids to get the essential treatment like occupational and speech therapies they need to be their best according to a press release.

“Community events like Little Lakers Night are integral to helping us get more kids into treatment, reducing wait times and allowing more families to get the care when they need it,” says Scott Pepin, FCCC CEO. “We could not do what we do without the support of organizations like the Peterborough Lakers.”

Rappers Nelly and Sean Kingston Hitting the Peterborough Memorial Centre Stage For Oct. 6

Two of America’s biggest rappers are taking to the Peterborough Memorial Centre stage as rappers Nelly and Sean Kingston will be performing in town for Oct. 6, announced on Monday.

Nelly has received 12 Grammy Award nominations and has won 30 other awards during his musical career. Nelly is bringing several of his hits such as “Hot in Herre”, “Ride wit Me”, “Country Grammar”, “Just a Dream” and more.

Sean Kingston is no stranger to the top of the charts with featured songs like “Fire Burning”, “Beautiful Girls” and “Take You There.”

Curve Lake First Nation Sends 10 Athletes to North American Indigenous Games In Halifax

Curve Lake is sending ten young athletes to represent Team Ontario in the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Halifax, N.S. in five days of competition beginning Monday.

Representing Curve Lake for Team Ontario are Louis Jacobs, Carter Jacobs, Rivor Taylor, Tristin Williams and Josh Knott who are all teammates for U19 Male Softball. Abagail Jacobs and Danika Jacobs are entered for U19 Female Soccer. McKenzie Taylor is the lone athlete for U16 Female Softball while Quinn Jacons and Grady Taylor are in U16 Male Softball.

The event started on Saturday and runs until July 24 with opening ceremonies that began on Sunday. There are 756 Indigenous Nations with over 5,000 athletes competing in 15 different events in this year’s games according to the official NAIG website.

The following is the schedule for Team Ontario with Curve Lake athletes:

U19 Male Softball

  • Tuesday, vs. Nova Scotia at 8 a.m.

Twelve entrepreneurs graduated from the program with seven receiving micro-grants based on the strength of their business plan.

They are, Jack Henry of OmniWorx a full-service brand, signage, website & graphic design firm, Kate Adams of Kate L. Toms Fit, a fitness instructor, personal trainer, and transformation coach, Michelle Fenn and Kendra Mancini of Working Human, a human-centered approach to adult learning, Tavlyn Evans and Crystal Walker of Sage Beauty, a new day spa in the Northcrest Plaza, Brigh Findlay-Shields of Brisa Social in Millbrook, a boutique social media agency that specializes in creating Instagram and TikTok strategies for businesses in the aesthetics industry, Andrew and Sean Fitzpatrick of Take Cover Books, brothers and bookworms offering new books, literary products, and Canadian-made stationery and Erin Burrell of EB Aquatics providing first aid and aquatic training to Peterborough City and County.

This year’s intake saw the highest number of applications so far. Since its launch in 2017, the Starter Company Plus program has assisted over 230 local entrepreneurs and more than 186 small businesses, creating over 220 jobs.

27-Year-Old Woman Suffered Fatal Injuries From County Road 21 Single-Vehicle Collision

A 27-year-old woman has succumbed to fatal injuries following a single-vehicle collision in the Tapley ¼ Line and County Road 21 area reported by the Peterborough Police Service on Friday morning.

At roughly 8 a.m., officers received calls and arrived at the scene of the incident.  The City of Kawartha Lakes woman was pronounced dead at the scene according to a police report.

The road has been reopened after being closed for several hours while the Traffic Reconstruction Unit conducted an investigation. Peterborough Police continue to investigate the situation.

Police have not released any information about the identity of the victim during this time.
