Voice of Business: Government Loan Repayment Post Cabinet Shuffle

Repaying loans is creating another financial challenge for our local business community.

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), The Bank of Canada recently increased interest rates and now the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) repayment deadline is looming. Many small business owners are facing more debt and more barriers to the long road of recovery from the pandemic. As we previously stated in our March Voice of Business column, it cannot be stressed enough that CEBA loan repayment is still a challenge for many small businesses. Recently, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and 280 industry associations penned a letter to Minister Freeland highlighting the number of businesses that may not survive in the long term due to ever-growing debt. According to the letter, 49 per cent of small businesses’ revenues are still below normal, and approximately half of tourism-based businesses may not survive in the next few years.

“…not all businesses have their heads above water yet: they’re facing extreme inflation, unreliable supply chains, and the tightest hiring market in a generation. They’re just asking for more time to pay the government back.”

- Matthew Holmes, Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations, Canadian Chamber of Commerce

In another turn of events, the federal government announced a cabinet shuffle on July 26. In this change, there will be a new Minister of Small Business, MP Rechie Valdez. Valdez is a former small business owner herself. We look forward to seeing what she can bring to the table. In the swearing-in ceremony, she stated she would like to make the small business its own portfolio.

The need for an extension has already come up in the past. In 2021, the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce authored a Policy Resolution for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce calling on the federal government to:

  1. Extend the deadlines for repayment of the Canada Emergency Business Account program by two years.

  2. Make the forgivable portion of the loan available to all businesses that continue to have operations impacted by ongoing COVID-19 public health restrictions throughout 2021.

  3. Allow businesses that continue to have operations impacted by ongoing COVID-19 public health restrictions in 2021 to be exempt from incurring interest prior to the balance of their loan being due.

With the deadline to receive partial loan forgiveness approaching in approximately 5 months, it is imperative that those who can repay their loans do so and return those funds back to government coffers. We can ease the decision for the government to extend the loan repayment windows for the businesses that are struggling the most. We have a new Minister of Small Business, which means now is the time to remind the government that not all businesses have recovered and are in a position to pay back their debts.

While most of the restrictions and challenges of the pandemic are over, we are still seeing the lasting impacts for the small business community. Peterborough and the Kawarthas’ economy depends on tourism and hospitality businesses, so let’s continue to work together to climb the ladder out of the pandemic slump still facing us today, hopefully with continued support from the federal government.

City of Peterborough Invites All To Participate In Celebration 40th Anniversary of Heritage Hunt

The Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (PACAC) is launching its 40th annual Heritage Hunt contest running from Aug. 1 to Sept. 16, announced on Tuesday.

“Since 1983, PACAC has been organizing the Heritage Hunt as a way to explore and celebrate our city’s collection of heritage buildings,” said Stewart Hamilton, PACAC Chair. “We are proud to be continuing this tradition 40 years on.”

PACAC invites everyone to test their knowledge of Peterborough’s architectural heritage for the chance to win a prize. Participants must identify 35 architectural details on buildings in a defined area of the city. All details are visible from the sidewalk and both sides of the street are in play.

This year’s hunt takes place in downtown Peterborough and East City.

A fillable form and map can be found online.

Booklets can also be picked up at the reception desk at City Hall, located at 500 George St. N., during regular business hours.

Prizes will be awarded in both individual and group categories for the correct identification of the most architectural elements. This year, there is also a bonus riddle for the chance to earn extra points.

GoFundMe Created For Local Teen Struggling With Mental Health To Get Therapy Dog

Local teen Payge Creasy has community support behind her to get a therapy dog for her mental health as donors are contributing to cover the costs in a GoFundMe created last Thursday.

GoFundMe photo.

The GoFundMe was created by her aunt Candice Williamson with a goal of $4,500 to pay for the therapy dog named Kyle. He is supposed to help Creasy during her panic attacks and other episodes when she is suffering from her mental health according to the Williamson on the GoFundMe. It continues to say that Creasy has suffered from mental health issues for the past few years including a six-week inpatient stay.

Alternatively, another fundraising effort on Sipology was created by Krystal C Daskewich, another one of Creasey’s aunts, entitled, ‘Paws For Payge.’ Roughly 40 per cent of the proceeds from the tea and tea accessory sales go towards Cresey’s campaign.

The teen was also an entrepreneur, selling handmade bath products with her company ‘Payge’s Paradise’ which began back in April 2019. Her handmade, chemical-free bath products include body butter, body scrubs, shower steamers, bath salts and candles.

Both fundraisers say that only money is holding the teen back from being able to get Kyle and help her cope with her mental health better.

The GoFundMe has already raised $855 of its $4,500 goal since the publication of this article.

Peterborough's Porter Martone and Team Canada Off to Rough Start at Hlinka-Gretzky Cup

Porter Martone and Team Canada are not having the start they envisioned as they lost 9-6 to Finland at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup at the Zimny stadion Trencin in Trencin, Slovakia on Monday afternoon.

Canada looked strong, scoring the first three of four goals in the first period. Finland scored with three minutes left to make it a one-goal game to make it 3-2 going into the second.

Finland surged with three straight goals to open the middle frame to have a 5-3 lead over Canada. Martone got himself involved in the score sheet, getting the secondary assist on a Berkly Catton power play goal. It was Canada’s only score of the frame going into the third, being down 5-4.

Canada seemingly got themselves back on track, scoring first in the third period but went downhill fast. Final scored four goals in less than four minutes to run away with the game. Canada scored a garbage-time goal but lost 9-6 in their opening game.

Canada will have to bounce back against Slovakia on Tuesday afternoon for their second preliminary game of the tournament. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 p.m.
