Peterborough Pete Alumnus Selected to NHLPA Rookie Showcase On Sept. 4

Peterborough Petes alumnus and Los Angeles Kings forward Akil Thomas has been selected as one of 33 players to participate in the 14th annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. on Sept. 4.

This event allows Upper Deck to capture photographs and videos of the selected rookies and prospects in their respectful NHL team uniforms to utilize the content for the company’s future products.

Thomas made his LA Kings debut on April Fools’ Day., in seven games, he had three goals and one assist with the team.

The Petes acquired Thomas in a trade from the Niagara IceDogs in January 2020 for Cameron Butler, two second-round picks (2020, 2022), one third-round pick (2022), and a fourth-round pick (2024).

He played 22 games for the Petes, scoring nine goals and 31 assists before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the Ontario Hockey League for the season. Thomas was invited back to the Peterborough Memorial Centre for Game Three of the OHL Championship against the London Knights as part of the pre-game ceremonies to pump up the fans on May 15.

Armour Road to Undergo Sewer Replacements and Spot Repairs Beginning Sept. 9

Armour Road is set to have swere replacements and spot repairs beginning on Sept. 9.

The work includes repairing two sections of storm sewer and repairing one section of sanitary sewer along Armour Road between Parkhill Road East and Vinette Street according to the City of Peterborough.

All work is scheduled to be completed by late fall.

After the necessary sewer repairs are completed, the affected surface areas will be restored. Traffic may be reduced to one lane using flagging operations during the project works to facilitate this work. As a result, local traffic is expected to experience delays within the construction limits.

The City has awarded the project to Accurex Inc.

Rotary Trail From Nassau Mills Road to Armour Road Closed For a Week For Repairs Starting Monday

The Rotary Trail from Nassau Mills Road to Armour Road will be closed for repairs beginning this Monday.

The work includes pavement crack sealing, saw cutting and removal of existing deteriorated asphalt at select locations, fine grading, placement of new asphalt where removed, application of emulsified asphalt tack coat and installation of hot mix asphalt overlay along the Rotary Trail from Nassau Mills Road to Armour Road.

The Rotary Trail from Nassau Mills to Armour Road will be closed for approximately seven days to facilitate this work. Alternate routes will be available, and users may follow the posted signs.

The work is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 3.

The City has awarded the project to Green Infrastructure Partners Inc.

Six Nations Chiefs Puts Peterborough Lakers Season In Jeopardy With 8-5 Win and 3-2 Series Lead

The Peterborough Lakers are on the brink of elimination after taking an 8-5 loss to the Six Nations Chiefs from their four-goal second period and down 3-2 in the MSL series final at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Sunday night.

The Lakers had the start they wanted with Rob Hellyer drawing first blood. While last year’s MSL MVP Lyle Thompson responded with a goal, Peterborough got two more from Joe Resetarits and Carter Page to make it 3-1. In the last 15 seconds of the frame, Travis Longboat cut the deficit to one and it was 3-2 going into the second.

Longboat continued the scoring, making it a tie game less than three minutes into the stanza. Thompson, Shayne Jackson and former Laker Eli McLaughlin also scored for Six Nations to snag the lead. Hellyer was the lone goal scorer for Peterborough as they find themselves trailing 6-4.

Peterborough scored first in the third on the power play. Hellyer got a hat trick to pull the Lakers within one. Longboat responded with a hat trick of his own to restore the two-goal lead for Six Nations. Nonkon Thompson scored another for the Chiefs and Peterborough could not find the back of the net and fell 8-5.

The loss puts the Lakers at a series deficit for the first time this playoff season 3-2 and are one game away from elimination. Game Six is at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

Third Year of Gauvreau CPA's 'Gear Up For Good' Initiative Sends 208 Backpacks to Kids For Back-To-School Head Start

There were 208 fully-stocked backpacks given by Gauvreau CPA’s ‘Gear Up for Good’ initiative to kids to get a head start on back to school at the accounting firm on Friday.

The children receiving the backpacks are affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough (Peterborough Bigs) and Kawartha Haliburton Children's Foundation.

The initiative is in its third year and has more than doubled its output from last year, with 101 and 73 in the inaugural event.

Seven businesses helped chip in by supplying products for the backpacks:

• Ricart Branded Apparel and Promo (200 water bottles and 25 backpacks donated)

• Quaker (800+ snacks donated)

• Eco Chalet Homes (150 Lunchboxes donated)

• Angela's Hair Co. (10+ Haircuts donated)

• Hair Studio One (10+ Haircuts donated)

Children and parents picked up the supplies throughout the day and selected their knapsacks on a first-come, first-served basis. Kawartha Haliburton Children's Foundation took 75 of the backpacks to be picked up at their facility.

Peterborough's Nolan Burke Traded to San Jose Sharks As Part of Top Goalie Prospect Deal

Peterborough’s Nolan Burke is headed to the Golden State as he was traded from the Nashville Predators to the San Jose Sharks as part of a deal involving top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov on Friday afternoon.

The Predators sent Burke, Askarov and a 2025 third-round pick in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick, centre David Edstrom, and goaltender Magnus Chrona.

The undrafted centreman signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Predators on Nov. 14, 2022.

Burke spent his entire OHL career with the Sarnia Sting, hitting the 50-goal mark in his last season.

Only four other Sarnia Sting players have broken the 50-mark in OHL history during the regular season. Reid Boucher in 2012-13 (62), Steven Stamkos in 2007-08 (58), Ivan Novoseltsev in 1998-99 (57) and Jon Sim in back-to-back seasons from 1995-97 (56).

Burke spent 2016-18 with the U15 AAA and U16 AAA Peterborough Petes.

List of City Services During Labour Day 2024

Several City of Peterborough services and facilities will operate during holiday hours or be closed on Labour Day Monday (Sept. 2).

City Hall

City Hall, including Building Services, the Clerk’s Office and the Tax Office will be closed on Sept. 2. Online services are available at peterborough.ca.

Garbage, Green Bin and yard waste

There are no changes to the curbside waste collection schedule.

The City/County Landfill at 1260 Bensfort Rd. will be closed.

The Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depot at 400 Pido Rd. will be closed. The Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depot’s normal operating hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Transit

Peterborough Transit will operate on a Sunday/Holiday service schedule on Monday, September 2. The Customer Service desk will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visit peterborough.ca/transit for details or call Transit Customer Service at 705-745-0525.

Peterborough Airport

The Peterborough Memorial Centre and the Grant Thornton Box Office will be closed on Sept. 2. Ticket sales are available online at memorialcentre.ca.

Art Gallery of Peterborough

Art Gallery of Peterborough at 250 Crescent St. will be closed. For information about gallery exhibitions and programs please visit agp.on.ca.

Peterborough Marina

The Peterborough Marina at 92 George St. N. will be open 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Splash pads

Splash pads in City parks are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Our summer lifeguard program at Beavermead Park and Rogers Cove beaches, as well as local wading pools, ending for the season on Sunday. Beaches are now unsupervised.

Sport and Wellness Centre

Sport and Wellness Centre at 775 Brealey Dr. will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 2.

Social Services

Peterborough Lakers Fall In Close Game to Six Nations Chiefs In 13-10 Loss, Series Tied at Two

The Peterborough Lakers made it a game with the defending-champion SIx Nations Chiefs but eventually fell 13-10 in Game Four of the MSL finals at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Thursday.

The teams traded five goals apiece in the first period. Joe Resetarits had Peterborough’s first two goals while Jake Withers, Thomas Hoggarth and Colton Armstrong got on the scoresheet.

Adam Thistlethwaite opened the scoring for Peterborough in the second period to give them the lead, 6-5. It was short-lived as Six Nations went on a four-goal run to pull away from Peterborough. The Lakers got one on the power play with 34 seconds left as Resetarits got a hat trick to cap off the period, 9-7.

Six Nations extended their lead in the third with two goals to open the frame. The teams alternated between scores including Resetarits’s fourth goal of the game while Owen Hiltz and Taite Cattoni each found the back of the net. The Lakers could not outscore the Chiefs in the third and wind up seeing the series evened at 2-2 with the 13-10 loss.

“We played a good 50 minutes of lacrosse but they’re such a talented team that in that 10 minutes we got lackadaisical, they made us pay,” said Jake Withers, Lakers defender. “That was the difference down the stretch. We play every game to win so we were hoping for a sweep but anyone who has any sense of logic would probably tell you that wasn’t going to happen.”

Game Five will be back at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Sunday, and Game Six will be back at the PMC on Tuesday.

Peterborough Golf and Country Club Opens Registration For Curling This Season

Peterborough Golf and Country Club is inviting anyone of all skill levels to join them as registration for curling has opened.

Their Learn to Curl program trains those 'new to the game' or those looking for a refresher. Experienced volunteer coaches instruct members on mechanics, skills and strategies.

By the end of the program, participants will successfully and competently enjoy fun competition on the ice and the following fellowship according to a press release.

This program includes club equipment, off-ice sessions, on-ice instruction and gameplay.

After completing the program, the graduates are invited to join the Novice League and can spare or join other leagues if space is available.

The program runs Wednesdays from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m., Oct. 23, 30, Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27, and Saturdays on Nov. 2 and 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Space is limited.

Back this year is the Junior Program. Starting in January, children ages seven to 14 will participate in a seven-week instruction program as an introduction to this favourite winter sport.

Experienced coaches will provide on and off-ice instruction and an introduction to the etiquette and rules of the game.

This program costs $175 + HST and includes snacks and a mini-bonspiel to celebrate your child’s new skills.
