Otonabee Conservation and Township of Cavan Monaghan to Begin Work On Millbrook Dam

Otonabee Conservation with the Township of Cavan Monaghan are conducting vegetation restoration work on the Millbrook dam to address significant erosion and safeguard critical infrastructure.

The project will help stabilize the area, protect critical infrastructure, and reduce the risk of further erosion according to Janette Loveys Smith, Otonabee Conservation CAO/Secretary-Treasurer.

“The Millbrook Dam is an important part of our watershed’s history and continues to play a critical role in managing water resources for the community today,” she said. “By investing in these restoration efforts, we are protecting both the structural integrity of this historic piece of infrastructure and the public safety, environmental, and recreational benefits it provides for future generations.”

Temporary cedar rail fencing is being put in place to protect damaged area, while still allowing public access along the existing footpath to cross the dam. The areas will be restored with topsoil and grass seed. Otonabee Conservation says the project anticipated to last two years. Ongoing pedestrian traffic across the embankment has caused erosion of the protective soil cover, exposing the underlying Flexamat system. This vegetated concrete block mat is a critical component of the dam and slope stabilization that helps maintain the long-term structural integrity of the dam.

“The Millbrook Dam is a valued community asset, and this work will help protect the infrastructure, support public safety, and preserve access to this important area for residents and visitors for years to come,” said Ryan Huntley, Township of Cavan Monaghan Deputy Mayor.

Couple Become Cavan's Newest Millionaires In Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball Draw

Dawn and John Shields are Cavan’s newest millionaires after winning LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball Draw on the April 13 draw, announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The married couple have played the lottery together for 20 years. They play weekly each week and always play Encore with their tickets.

The winning ticket remained in John’s wallet for two months before the two discovered the big win.

“I had to check the ticket twice and went straight home to tell Dawn,” said John. “Dawn said, ‘We better triple check it to make sure we are seeing it correctly.’”

“When we told our kids, there was a lot of excitement. They told us they had never been happier for us,” said Dawn. “They are great kids and they shed a few happy tears for us.”

The married couple say they plan to pay some bills, invest and have a nice family dinner to celebrate.

“It feels surreal to win the lottery,” said John.

“It’s everything! One day you’re living your life and then next, everything changes,” said Dawn.

The winning ticket was purchased at Pioneer On the Run on Lansdowne Street.

Cavan-Monaghan Hosting Free Outdoor Screening of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’

Cavan Monaghan Township is hosting a free outdoor screening of the hit film ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre this Thursday.

Families are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for the event. Pre-movie activities start at 7 p.m. with the film beginning at 8:15 p.m.

Concessions are available at the event. In case of bad weather, the event will be rescheduled.

Peterborough Police Seeking Stolen RV From Cavan-Monaghan Residence

A recreational vehicle has been reported stolen from Cavan-Monaghan residence according to Peterborough Police Service announced on Thursday morning.

Reports of the stolen vehicle were made to the police on Wednesday. 

The police believe it was stolen from 5:00 p.m. Friday to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. It was reported being seen at a gas station in the Highway 7A and Highway 35 area on Tuesday.

The vehicle is described as:

• 2004 Ford Great West Camper Van

• White with a turquoise stripe

• Ontario plate AZWN251

Community Mourns Passing Of Cathy Moore Cavan-Monaghan Councillor

Cavan-Monaghan Councillor Cathy Moore passed away on Dec. 22.

Members of the community looking to honour Moore will be able to do so virtually. The private funeral will be livestreamed on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Visitations will be held Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge St.

In memory of Councillor Moore, donations can be made to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation.
