A Fresh Look at Knights of Columbus Park as Redevelopment Nears Completion

Knights of Columbus Park in downtown Peterborough is nearing the finish line on a major redevelopment, with new recreation and family-friendly features coming to the space at 5 Park Street North.

The redeveloped park will feature four new tennis courts, upgrades to the Bowl, an off-leash dog area, a splash pad replacing the former wading pool, public washrooms, a shade structure, improved lighting and more trees. The existing playground will remain in place.

Details on when they redeveloped park will reopen to the public have not being released but the city’s website lists fall of 2026.

The Legacy Bowl will officially be renamed the Bobby Allan Legacy Bowl at an unveiling ceremony at 1pm on November 5th, honouring the Peterborough lacrosse legend who grew up playing at the park.

Naming Ceremony for Bobby Allan Bowl Set for November 5th at Knights of Columbus Park

A date has been set to officially name the new bowl at Knights of Columbus Park in honour of Peterborough lacrosse legend Bobby Allan.

The naming ceremony will take place at 1pm on November 5th at Knights of Columbus Park.

Peterborough City Council previously endorsed a motion to name the facility the Bobby Allan Legacy Bowl, recognizing Allan’s lasting contributions to lacrosse as both a player and coach.

Allan who grew up just blocks from the park, spent much of his youth playing lacrosse there before building a remarkable career that included four Mann Cup championships as a player, a world championship as head coach of Canada’s national field lacrosse team in 1970 and a Mann Cup title with the Peterborough Lakers as head coach in 1973.

Allan has also been inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

The naming will recognize a local sports figure whose impact on lacrosse extended well beyond Peterborough.

Knights of Columbus Park Closed This Week For Improvements

Knights of Columbus Park is expected to be temporarily closed starting this week, with work starting on improvements to the park, including park lighting, new tennis courts and upgrades to the Legacy Bowl.

Located at 5 Park St. N., the Park was identified as a priority during the City of Peterborough’s Parks and Outdoor Recreation Study.  

Improvements to the park include: 

• four new tennis courts 

• improved lighting 

• Legacy Bowl upgrades 

• an off-leash dog area 

• upgrading the wading pool to a splash pad 

• adding washrooms 

• adding more trees 

• a shade structure 

• enhancing accessibility  

Construction on the tennis courts is set to finish in the summer of next year and the remainder of the project is to be completed by fall of the same year.

Parking, including overnight parking, will be prohibited in the Knights of Columbus Park parking lot during construction. The no parking regulation for the parking lot during construction will be enforced, which can include the issuance of a penalty notice, towing and impoundment of the vehicle or a combination of these measures.
