Peterborough Lakers Alumni Hosting First Online Jersey Auction of Local NLL Players
/The Peterborough Lakers Alumni is holding its first-ever online jersey auction of local lacrosse stars in their National Lacrosse League (NLL) uniforms.
There are 16 NLL player jerseys — both past and present — available for auction that plays such as include Cory Viterelli, Shawn Evans Bryce Sweeting and Robert Hope.
The deadline to bid on the jerseys ends at 9 p.m. Tuesday., which is roughly the end of the second period of game four of the MSL 2022 final.
Bidders can either visit the Peterborough Memorial Centre beside the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame or go online to participate in the auction.
Over $4,500 Raised For Special Olympic Athletes In Charity Lacrosse Game
/Over $4,500 was raised at the Cradle for Special Olympics in a friendly lacrosse game between Team Educator/Boro Boys and the Peterborough Lakers at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Wednesday.
Teachers, the Boro Boys and members of the 1967 undefeated Peterborough PCOs took on the Peterborough Lakers (both past and present) to a 16-16 draw.
Raffles, admission fees and donation boxes contributed to the fundraiser for the one-day event. All proceeds benefit Special Olympic athletes in a variety of ways.
"The money can fund a lot of things,” said Ernie Ellement, Boro Boys founder. “It could be as something as simple as sports equipment to helping some families with registrations."
The annual game was on hold for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic so having the fundraiser was refreshing for Bill Chapman, Special Olympics coordinator.
"The turnout was fantastic," he said. "It was a fundraiser that I've been to like no other. Peterborough is always a community to go to bat for every organization we have.”
The intermission featured shootouts with the Lakers broadcast crew, Peterborough PCO members and Special Olympic athletes.
Players wore special red socks in honour of the Peterborough Red Stockings as they played the first lacrosse game in town in 1872.
Third Annual Lakers Alumni Golf Tournament To Support Peterborough Grassroots Lacrosse Programs
/Roughly 70 golfers teed off at the Keystone Links Golf & Country Club for the third annual Peterborough Lakers Alumni golf tournament held on Friday.
Professional lacrosse players, former Peterborough Lakers and golfing fans were invited to participate in the open tournament. Past and present players including members of the undefeated 1974 Peterborough PCO lacrosse team were in attednance.
All proceeds go towards the Peterborough Lakers Alumni that support the sustainability and grassroots lacrosse programs in the Peterborough area.
“We feel that if we don't focus on that area, then we're just going to dissolve after so many years so focusing on that, trying to make sure we have new kids coming into the game and trying to make it non-cost prohibitive for families,” said Jamie Batley, Alumni president.
Lakers alumni Doug Evans, Paul Evans, Brian Evans, Bob Wasson and Johnny “Shooter” Davis all took ceremonial tee shots from the first hole prior to the tournament.
The tournament had prizes for lowest score, closest-to-pin shots and longest drives for both the male and female categories.
