Children's Performers Splash 'N Boots To Perform At 34th Annual Peterborough Folk Festival

Juno Award-winning children’s performers Splash’N Boots are making their way to the 34th annual Peterborough Folk Festival at Nicholls Oval Park for Aug. 20, announced on Tuesday.

“The much-loved Children's Village is one of the most popular aspects of Peterborough Folk Festival, with family-friendly activities like crafts, face-painting and children's performers all weekend long on the dedicated Children’s Stage,” sayid Rob Davis, Folk Festival chair. “We can't wait to see the Yellow and Blue Crew kids parade from the Children's Village to enjoy Splash'N Boots on the Main Stage.”

The Festival is a four-day celebration of music, culture and community. It kicks off at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre on August 17th and various downtown venues on August 18. Nicholls Oval Park weekend events have free admission.

“It’s a collective experience for us and the audience. Our goal is always connection – bringing kids closer to their families and also to each other,” explains Boots.

“Our hope is that our music will connect and also inspire kids to stand up tall in who they are and know that they are always loved,” said Splash. “Unique and inventive, they constantly strive to create opportunities for parents and children to share moments.”

This fundraiser for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation (PRHC Foundation) supports world-class breast and other cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment, and has raised over $3.9 million so far.

Watch Harness Racing at Kawartha Downs

Horse racing is an exciting sport, dynamic business and a major contributor to the agricultural economy in Ontario. At Kawartha Downs, we feature harness or Standardbred racing where the horses are attached to a race bike (called a sulky) and are steered by drivers through a one mile race.

Kawartha Downs is a five-eighths mile track which means the races start on the far side (away from the grandstand) of the racetrack, pass by the grandstand and race once more around the track with the exciting finish right in front of the fans and grandstand.

The horses which compete in harness racing have two distinct gaits. Pacers, the most common, move with both legs on the same side operating together. The front and hind legs on the right and left side move together. The majority of pacers wear equipment called hopples which help them maintain their gait.

When a trotter races their opposite legs work together – the front right and left rear come forward at the same time and vice versa.

The Standardbred horse is noted for its versatility and even temperament. Many harness horse that don’t make the racetrack can be found in the Mennonite communities, working as police horses and used in therapeutic riding programs. Standardbreds also make great riding horses and can be trained to compete in a variety of disciplines including barrel racing, dressage etc.

Trent Valley Archives will be hosting ‘Author! Author!’ a Meet the Author event at The Mount Community Centre May 27 with featured authors Rosemary McConkey, Bob Reid and Elwood Jones.

The free event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will also feature the music of Allan Kirby and his Backwoodsmen sharing some of the tunes from their recent CD, ‘Cross Cut.’ This features many classic folk songs from the area, some of which were referenced in Dr. Alan Kirby’s ‘Fowke Songs’.

Hutchison House: Silent Auction Fundraiser

As part of the celebrations surrounding May is Museum Month, Hutchison House Museum will be hosting a Silent Auction with a variety of donated items to raise money for a new Sir Sandford Fleming Exhibit to replace the Sandford Fleming Room. The new redesign will help with traffic flow in the museum and allow us to tell a large story for Fleming, exploring different themes and allowing us to display more permanently some of the great original Fleming artefacts that can be found in the collection.

Auction items range from Original Framed Artwork, signed or rare books, Venetian glass, memorabilia and more! Auction items will be on display in the Harvey Connal Room of the museum and online on our website and Social Media channels from May 1-19.

Mother’s Day Weekend Amongst the Vines

Treat mom with an exclusive day at Rolling Grape Vineyard: signature mimosa, carefully crafted brunch, a wine tour and a free floral gift.

Peterborough Fibre Arts Festival

Peterborough Weavers and Spinners Guild invite you to come and celebrate everything fibre! 

Spinning, Weaving, Dyeing, Felting, and Basketry supplies will be available, along with demonstrations throughout the event.

Vendors will be selling fluffy fibres, beautiful yarns, books, patterns, kits and Artisan quality gift items.

Free parking is available in the underground lot under Galaxy Cinemas.

Pottery Date Night Mother’s Day Event

Explore something new together and try your hand at one of the potter’s wheels alongside someone special. Share a special moment while learning the basic technique in throwing a pot.

It is important to arrive 10-15 mins ahead of time. The pottery studio is downstairs so the door will not remain open. It is a long process for pottery to become ready to come home, so allow 3-4 weeks for your pottery pieces to be finished for you. We will call you once they are ready for pickup.

When: May 14, 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Tickets: $90 per couple (Additional costs: For every piece you would like to keep, they will finish, fire and glaze for $10 a piece; mug handles are an additional $5. This must be prepaid the night of the workshop with cash, cheque, debit or credit card). You can keep as many pieces as you wish.

Heart of Trent Event Recognizes Outstanding Contributions of Staff, Faculty, Retirees

The outstanding contributions of Trent faculty, staff and retirees were celebrated Wednesday at the University’s annual Heart of Trent employee appreciation event, hosted this year at Trent’s Durham GTA campus in Oshawa.

“This event is a genuine celebration,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor. “It is an opportunity for our community to gather and recognize the successes and achievements of our dedicated staff and faculty – truly, the heart of Trent – throughout another momentous year. 

At the event, the University celebrated the 2022/23 recipients of the several esteemed awards, including: Team Innovation, Community Leadership, Eminent Service, Provost Award for Support Staff, the Nancy E. Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence, Research Impact Award, and Eminent Service Awards. Trent also recognized its long-serving employees and retirees as vital members of the Trent community.

The Ennis Sisters In Concert At Market Hall

For over 25 years, The Ennis Sisters have been connecting to audiences across the world. From arts centres in their home province of Newfoundland and Labrador to performing for International leaders and delegates at the 75th anniversary of D-Day on Juno Beach, their harmonies resonate with us all.

Verdi’s Requiem

Pick Up Some Produce at The Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market

We invite you to listen to the sounds of our local musicians while visiting our 100+ vendor outdoor market May 1 to October 31, rain or shine in the Morrow Building parking lot. From November 1 to April 30, we are located inside the Morrow Building just south of the parking lot.

The establishment of a central market area for individual trade or sales has been a feature of societies all over the world for centuries. This trade has taken place in Peterborough for the past 190 years. This efficient method of commerce (ie. producer, direct to consumer) has gained much interest in recent years as small businesses have grown. We at the Peterborough Farmers’ Market are proud to be part of this popular phenomenon.
