Comedian Chris D’Elia Brings "Straight Outta The Multiverse Tour" to Peterborough Memorial Centre Sept. 13

The stand-up comedian has toured the US and Canada and has three comedy specials available on Netflix: No Pain, Man on Fire and Incorrigible. He was chosen as one of four comics to represent the US in Netflix's 2019 Series ‘Comedians of the World’ which features 47 comedians from 13 regions in eight different languages. His first special, ‘White Male, Black Comic’ debuted on Comedy Central in 2013 and he can be seen on Comedy Central's Roast of Justin Bieber.

The comedian is also known for his podcast ‘Congrautlations with Chris D’Elia’ since its debut in February 2017. He is also a co-star on The Golden Hour with Brendan Schaub and Erik Griffin.

The venue pre-sale begins Wednesday at noon and the public sale is on Thursday at noon.

New Canadians Centre Launch Canadian Multicultural Festival For June

In celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27, the New Canadians Centre (NCC) is organizing the Canadian Multicultural Festival for the month, announced at Fresh Dreams on Tuesday.

The festival is a series of programs and events celebrating multiculturalism in Peterborough.

A Multicultural Food Crawl, with 10 participating restaurants, was announced at the event to let the public experience culturally diverse flavours in Downtown Peterborough.

The locations are as follows:

For every $10 spent during June, festival goers receive a stamp in your Multicultural Food Passport. Six stamps enter them into a draw to win one of three $100 Boro Gift Cards.

Passports are available at the NCC or any of the participating 10 restaurants.

“In Spain, our culture, our unity, and our love starts from the table where we spend hours talking with families and friends while sharing family-style meals, said Monica Silva, Fresh Dreams owner. Through my dishes and Fresh Dreams, I want to show the community a part of Europe and my culture.”

NCC’s 45th Anniversary Block Party will give samples from each participating restaurant at 221 Romaine St. on June 28 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. (while supplies last).

City of Peterborough to Celebrate Crossing Guard Appreciation Week Starting Monday

The City of Peterborough is encouraging everyone to show their support and appreciation for their neighbourhood crossing guards during Crossing Guard Appreciation Week starting Monday to June 7.

The initiative goes beyond a simple ‘thank you’ and strives to create a heightened awareness of these unsung heroes’ critical role in promoting safe and active travel to school according to the City.

“It's important to celebrate our dedicated staff working as crossing guards who help our students have a safe journey to and from school every day. As a community, we count on their steadfast commitment to the safety of our children, and we appreciate their friendly approach to community service,” said Councillor Don Vassiliadis. “We hope that students, parents, and drivers take a moment this week to tell our crossing guards how much you appreciate them.” 

The City of Peterborough currently employs 52 school crossing guards and is looking to fill more positions for September. Anyone interested in applying can visit www.peterborough.ca/CrossingGuard or phone 705-742-7777 ext. 1787. 

New Community Safety Zones on roads fronting elementary and secondary schools were implemented in December. Speed limits in school areas were reduced from 50 kilometres per hour to either 40 or 30 kilometres.

All vehicles and cyclists are required by the Ontario Highway Traffic Act to stop and wait until children and crossing guards have cleared the entire roadway at school crossings before proceeding. 

To support your local crossing guards: 

• Stop when a crossing guard raises their stop sign. 

• Take notice of whether a guard is on duty and slow down when approaching school crossing locations. 

• Obey the law. Remain stopped until all children and the crossing guard have completely exited the roadway. 

• Proceed with caution – obey posted speed limits and observe all no stopping and no parking signs – park in designated areas only. 

The Ontario Traffic Council held a drawing contest themed ‘Celebrating Our School Crossing Guards’ which received 179 drawing submissions from 50 schools across Ontario including Peterborough.

The winning submissions have been formatted into thank you cards and social media graphics that are available for free download on the Ontario Traffic Council website.

City of Peterborough to Celebrate Recreation and Parks Month For June

The City of Peterborough is celebrating June as ‘Recreation and Parks Month’ with a variety of events and activities.

The goal is to promote the benefits of being active and recognize the contribution that recreation and parks make to the quality of life. The provincial Recreation and Parks Month 2024 theme is ‘'Community Thrives Here.’ 

“Take time in June to try a new activity or return to an old favourite,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell and Councillor Gary Baldwin. “Access to parks, sports and recreation helps foster physical and mental health, strong communities, and social inclusion.  Recreation and Parks Month is a time to celebrate Peterborough’s remarkable parks, trails and sports and recreation services and raise awareness of the role they play as a pathway to individual and community well-being.”  

Throughout June, Peterborough Recreation and Parks Services will highlight family-friendly, fun recreation events in the community.

Everyone is invited to the Recreation and Parks Month Kick-off at Quaker Foods City Square between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday. The kick-off will feature breakfast, refreshments, group fitness and children’s activities alongside the weekly Saturday Farmers Market.

Lakefield Trail to Host Family Paddle Day During National Paddling Week On June 20

Join us for the annual Family Paddle Day, A cherished tradition continues as the Lakefield Trail is hosting Family Paddle Day on June 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Lakefield Beach.

The event helps celebrate National Paddling Week.

Participants are welcome to bring their own canoes or kayaks or use Adventure Outfitters' provided ones on a first-come, first-served basis.

To ensure availability, Lakefield Trail recommends reserving your canoe or kayak in advance by contacting Adventure Outfitters at (705) 652-7986.

Paddlers will venture Lake Katchawanooka and the Marsh. After that, everyone is invited to enjoy an evening bonfire with hot dogs, marshmallows and a special ‘Canoe Cake’ baked by Jennie Mackenzie of the Lakefield Pantry.

“This event is more than just a paddling experience; it’s a celebration of community, camaraderie, and conservation. To celebrate Lakefield’s historical connection to canoe building, we strongly encourage anyone with a wooden boat to join in the Paddle Day event,” as stated in a press release.

City of Peterborough Continues To Accept Entries For 2024 Canada Day Parade Until June 14

The City of Peterborough continues to accept entries from community groups and businesses until June 14 for the Canada Day Parade on July 1.

Parade entry applications are open until June 14 at 4:30 p.m. 

“The Canada Day parade has been a family favourite in Peterborough for decades,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “It’s fantastic to have the community come together to celebrate our country and reflect on its history. Having an entry in the parade is an excellent opportunity for local businesses and community groups to connect with everyone along the parade route.”

Parade entry forms are available online and paper copies are available at the Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre at 775 Brealey Dr. and City Hall at 500 George St. N.  

While the Canada Day Parade welcomes both community groups and commercial floats, the latter will be charged a fee of $125, payable online, according to a press release.

Each parade entry will require a representative to attend a safety orientation meeting on June 25 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the banquet room of Healthy Planet Arena, 911 Monaghan Rd.

View Creativity at the Mount Community Centre's Eighth-Annual 'Get Your Art On' Exhibition

The Mount Community Centre is hosting their eighth-annual ‘Get Your Art On,’ exhibition and sale of local arts and crafts at their facility at the Austin Doran Hall on May 24 to 26.

The exhibition features paintings, photography, pottery, sculpturing, woodworking and more on display and for sale.

The official opening ceremony starts on the 24 at 6 p.m. Each day onward is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“There are numerous artists and crafts people coming to display and sell their works,” says Hartley Stephenson, local artist and event organizer. “The items are unique and specially designed to please the buyer. Attendees are bound to find something that will interest them and be a perfect gift for Mother’s day celebrations.”

The event is free to attend and 10 per cent of all profits going towards the Mount’s efforts to provide affordable housing and food security.

Kawartha Downs (KD) has opted to get bigger and become a better hub as they released their lineup of events for 2024 including their harness racing schedule announced at the track on Thursday afternoon.

Over 80 houses will be hosting a yard sale on their front lawns.

“Whether you're a seasoned collector, a bargain hunter or just looking for some good old-fashioned fun, there will be something for everyone,” said Ashley Bonner of East City PTBO. “From furniture to clothing, books, toys, tools and everything in between, you never know what gems you'll find.”

Houses in East City, ranging from Wallace Street to Lisburn Street and spanning Armour Road and Hunter Street, are in on the action.
