Suzi Home Maker And Kawartha Food Share Join Move For Hunger To Help Provide Meals For Those In Need

Suzi Home Maker, a Downsizing and Senior Specialty Move Manager, and Kawartha Food Share have announced that they have joined Move For Hunger, a national hunger relief non-profit organization, to help provide meals to those in need in Peterborough.

"We're extremely fortunate and appreciative to join such a much-needed cause," said Susan Dunkley, owner of Suzi Home Maker. "The sustainable donation process that Move For Hunger undertakes is quite extraordinary. With this partnership, we look forward to having the ability to do our part in getting food delivered to those who need it most. I would also encourage all moving companies and relocation specialists to consider joining this great cause.”

Move For Hunger has provided over 27 million pounds of food, equaling nearly 23 million meals, to food pantries across the United States and Canada.

Since its founding in 2009, Move for Hunger has created a sustainable way for people to donate food. Move For Hunger now has a network of over 1,100 moving companies, including many of the world’s leading relocation management companies, and more than 2,600 multi-family apartment communities, all helping to fight to end hunger by collecting food items and delivering them to local food banks in the United States and Canada.

Local Creamery Holds First "Bigfoot Day" As Family-Friendly Event

It might be the closest sighting Selwyn and Peterborough may get of the legendary creature as Central Smith Creamery held its first ‘Bigfoot Day’ as a family-friendly event on Friday afternoon.

The Bigfoot is a nod to one of the creamery’s flavours that consists of vanilla ice cream, peanut butter cups and chocolate ripple.

“Bigfoot ice cream has been a staple around Central Smith for about 25 years and we just felt it was time to really highlight the flavour,” said Jenn Scates, Central Smith Creamery co-owner.

The event features ‘Bigfoot’ as a costume, one dollar kiddie cones of the respective flavour, a search for 10 hidden ice cream vouchers and children’s activities.

Visitors were allowed to have their photos taken with Bigfoot and interact with him while getting ice cream.

The event is the creamery’s first that doubles as a playful joke towards Trent University.

"There's apparently a group at Trent University who's been looking for Bigfoot so we wanted to tell them that we 'found' him," said Scates.

The event was originally scheduled for last Friday but was postponed due to the weather. Central Smith has over 60 flavours of ice cream that are in regular rotation.

Peterborough Lacrosse Makes Another Stamp In Its 150th Anniversary With Commemorative Beer

Peterborough’s 150th lacrosse anniversary continues its milestone celebrations with the “150” beer made by Publican House Brewery in a collaboration announced on Thursday.

The beer came as an idea from a lunch between Marty Laskaris, Publican House president and co-founder and Tim Barrie, Lakers hall-of-fame goaltender and journalist Ed Arnold.

"We can make a beer, 150-anniversary beer that can help with events in the summer and we can do some other things with the proceeds and we'd love to be a part of that,” said Laskaris. "The whole thing came together after that."

A portion of the beer sales benefits minor lacrosse associations in the Peterborough area. The beer remains on the brewery’s menu as long as it maintains its sales.

"If you read Ed Arnold's book, the book is primarily about 1974 undefeated team but it took 10 years to build that team," said Barrie. "It's something no other community had was a minor system like Peterborough had where we basically lived and breathed lacrosse all summer and it was a sport we loved and we just wanted to play. The foundations of the game are so important."

The beer is a four per cent lager that best represents the undefeated season of the 1974 Peterborough PCOs that went 46-0 according to Laskaris.

"The team that went all the way in '74, undefeated, very smooth, very light on their feet, very fast so I thought this light lager is going to come together with the theme of the team back then," he said.

The beer is available at Publican House’s beer store beside its restaurant. Copies of Arnold’s book, ‘Peterborough’s Perfect Season: With Benny and his Jets’ is also available for purchase.

The Wolf 101.5 Rocks 30th Anniversary With Commemorative Beer to Benefit Kawartha Food Share

The Wolf 101.5 is rocking its 30th anniversary with a commemorative “Howler” beer in a partnership with Bobcaygeon Brewing Company where part of the proceeds goes towards Kawartha Food Share (KFS) in a product launch on Saturday.

The beer titled ‘Howler’ is a four per cent cream ale developed by the local brewery. The Wolf promoted the beer’s launch at the brewery into Saturday afternoon while broadcasting on site.

"They actually created three different beers for us to sample," said Brian Ellis, Wolf morning show host. "We picked the one we picked and we're glad we did because that's the one Bobcaygeon Brewing would hope we picked too."

Each beer sold gets 25 cents towards Kawartha Food Share. The demand for food banks has risen in Peterborough and fundraising for them was an easy decision according to Ellis.

"There's unfortunately a need in the city for their services," he said. "When you look in the past few years, there are more people using Kawartha Food Share, our local food bank in our area and surrounding area than there were two years ago."

Ellis and other Wolf staff a the launch say they are grateful for the community supporting them for three decades. The beer and donating to KFS were one way they wanted to give back to the community.

"You look across the country, across North America and there are not very many radio stations that have been around like we have," explained Ellis. "It goes back again to us trying to give back to the listeners, our sponsors, our advertisers that have kept us in business for 30 years.”

The beer is available at the brewery while supplies last.
