Independent Record Shop ZAP Records Opening Location At Former Moondance

Independent record shop ZAP Records, which has been located in Downtown Cobourg since 1991, has announced they are opening another location in Downtown Peterborough in the former Moondance store location (425 George St. N.).

“We’ve known Mike at Moondance forever, shopping his collection like every other record collector, and we were just as surprised when he announced his retirement," says Zap Records owner Tim Gorman. "After watching the response and talking with people in Peterborough, we knew we had to do what we could to make sure the location continued to be an independent record shop."

"Mike and Moondance will be missed, and we can obviously never replace him, but we hope that Peterborough will be just as excited as we are to keep the torch burning for independent record shops in downtown Peterborough," adds Gorman, who will be manning the Peterborough store with additional staff.

ZAP Records plans to open the Peterborough location by the end of June, with a great collection of new and previously owned vinyl, CD’s, collectibles and more. They will continue to special order music for customers in search of rare and precious albums.

Their current location in downtown Cobourg will stay exactly where it is.

Icon Gordon Lightfoot To Play Memorial Centre November 23rd

Iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who recently donated the yellow canoe featured in his song "Canary Yellow Canoe" to the Canoe Museum in town, returns to Peterborough for a performance at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Friday, November 23rd at 8 p.m.
 
Beloved by music fans around the world, Lightfoot holds international recognition as a singer and songwriter. In 1971, he earned his first Top Ten hit when "If You Could Read My Mind" became an international sensation.

Lightfoot has won 15 JUNO Awards and has been nominated for five Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. In May 2003, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Tickets go on sale Friday, February 16th at 10 a.m. They range from $45.50 to $99.50, plus applicable taxes and service fees. Tickets are available at the box office at the PMC, by phone 705.743.3561 and online at memorialcentre.ca.

The Spades Reunited For This Awesome Jam Session

Peterborough rockers The Spades last played together in public August 10th, 2013 at their goodbye Hootenanny on Hunter Street show in front of thousands of adoring fans.

Late last summer, they reunited for a special jam session that was captured by the Peterborough music show Bandwagon.

"I don't know if there's more to to come from the band," Bandwagon's Ryan Lalonde tells PTBOCanada. "But if there's one thing I've learned from them, it's to never count them out. They've been incredibly missed on the local scene."

It Was A Marvelous Ride For A Moondance

It's the end of an era for an iconic downtown Peterborough music store. Moondance, which generations of vinyl lovers have been going to (it opened in 1972) is closing.

After surviving all the changes that have taken place in the music industry, the owner of the independent music store Mike Taveroff announced on a Facebook post that he is retiring, and the store will close for good Saturday, April 28th.

Moondance, whose About Us page on Facebook jokes that, "We're so old that we have music that isn't even on the internet!", was known as the place where you could track down any obscure recording—and if they didn't have it Mike would special order it for you.

"We hope that you’ll come in and check out the great deals to be had and have a blast from your past in this iconic place," he writes in the Facebook post.

Documentary Premiere On Peterborough's Music Scene February 3rd At Market Hall

The long awaited documentary The Radius Project on how Peterborough's music scene has created so many international stars is having its world premiere at the Market Hall in early February.

Produced by Michael Hurcomb and Ryan Lalonde—who first began pre-production on this back in 2014—the documentary debuts Saturday February 3rd, at 8 p.m. at the Market Hall Performing Arts Centre in Peterborough.

The Radius Project was born out of a simple question: “So which famous people would I know from your hometown?” The hometown in question was Peterborough and the answer was endless.

The Radius Project looks at the wealth of musicians that came from the radius around town and went on to national and international acclaim. A short list of people that grew up or relocated to the area are Serena Ryder, Royal Wood, Three Days Grace, Thousand Foot Krutch, The Silver Hearts, Ronnie Hawkins, The Leahys, producers Greg and Rob Wells and many more.

Imagining If Neil Young Rocks Omemee

There is much speculation—some of it courtesy of hints from Neil Young himself—that his December 1st acoustic concert to be broadcast on CTV, streamed online on CTV.ca and live streamed on Facebook may well be coming to us from Omemee, Ont., near Peterborough, the place Young spent some of his formative years as a child.

Toronto, Pickering, Winnipeg and Omemee—all places Young lived as a kid—are on the shortlist of where Young is expected to play from. But the small town of Omemee, with its historic Coronation Hall—the very hall Young posted a video in front of a couple months ago (more on that below)—would be the perfect choice for him to play coinciding with the release of his new album, The Visitor.

Not only did Young spend some of his adolescent years there—below is a Grade 1 class photo at Omemee Public School (1951-52) where he is standing in the back row, third from the left—but for many years a volunteer run museum, the Youngtown Rock & Roll Museum, was based out of Omemee until 2014 that was dedicated to the rock legend.

His iconic "Helpless"—with its lyrics "There is a town in North Ontario, with dream comfort, memory to spare"—was written as an ode to his Omemee childhood home.

And his Facebook post (see below) saying "I will be going to my town"—not city—further fuelled the notion that he would pick Omemee, though one could interpret him using "town" colloquially, yes.

As well, back on September 24th, Young made a stop in Omemee in front of where he's rumoured to be playing and mentioned "the Visitor" in a tweet that is now carrying extra weight...

Ryan Lalonde is a co-producer of an upcoming documentary The Radius Project that looks at the wealth of famous musicians who come from the area in and around Peterborough, such as Young, Thousand Foot Crutch, Three Days Grace, My Darkest Days, I Mother Earth, Ronnie Hawkins, The Leahys (and Natalie McMaster), producers Greg and Rob Wells, and Serena Ryder.

"For Neil Young to play a show here in town and to document it for people to watch forever, it'd be huge," Lalonde tells PTBOCanada. "And it's a testament to not forgetting where you come from."

"If it's Omemee he chooses—and I still think it's a BIG 'if'—it really brings him full circle," adds Lalonde. "This would be a phenomenal gift to the town, even if for one night only. It gives them a legitimate claim to their favourite son. Everyone has an opinion where his home town is, and this might just put the argument to bed."

Neil Young Returns To Childhood Home Of Omemee For Visit, Posts Video

Young, 71, who now lives in Northern California, was back in Canada to be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Massey Hall in Toronto.

Fleming College’s Official Song Remastered For 50th Anniversary

"Let the Deed Show", Fleming College’s official song that was commissioned for the College’s 25th anniversary, has been remastered and updated for Fleming’s 50th.
 
The song details the life of Sir Sandford Fleming, the College’s namesake, and his contributions to society. Written by local performer Danny Bronson, Bronson returned to the studio recently at Haggarty Studios in Peterborough with some of the finest studio musicians in Canada to record the new rendition of the song.

Bronson, who has breathed new life into the classic song, performs "Let the Deed Show" every year at all of Fleming College’s convocation ceremonies at its Frost and Sutherland campuses.

Bronson, along with students, alumni and employees, will be in attendance at the college’s Sutherland Campus 50th Anniversary celebration on September 22nd from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
