Peterborough Petes Netminder Named OHL Goaltender of the Week For Nov. 17 to 23

Peterborough Petes netminder Easton Rye has been named the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Goaltender of the Week, announced on Monday.

Rye went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .952 save percentage.

The hometown native turned aside 34-of-35 shots on Thursday night as the Petes were victorious with a 7-1 score over the Brampton Steelheads. He stopped 26 more shots on Saturday as Peterborough defeated the visiting Kingston 6-2, improving to 14-8-1-1 for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

The 19-year-old Rye sits tied for the OHL lead with 13 wins, owning a 2.77 goals-against average and .914 save percentage over 19 games. The 6-foot, 196 lb. goaltender owns a career mark of 24-22-3-2 with a 3.63 goals-against average and .898 save percentage through 57 career regular season games since the Petes selected him in the fifth round (89th overall) of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.

The Petes play again on Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre when they host the North Bay Battalion. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Sweep Home-and-Home Series With Kingston Frontenacs

The Peterborough Petes add to their winning streak by defeating the Kingston Frontenacs in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday.

The series began on the road on Friday at the Slush Puppie Place as the Petes defeated the Frontenacs in overtime, 3-2. Adam Novotný scored his second goal of the game 23 seconds into overtime to win the game for Peterborough, to go with his one assist.

Adam Levac scored and had an assist. Yanis Lutz, Kaden McGregor and Carson Cameron each had a helper. Masen Johnston stopped 25 of 27 for his first career OHL win.

On Saturday, the Petes hosted Kingston at the Peterborough Memorial Centre in. Peterborough was victorious, winning 6-2 to extend their winning streak to three on back-to-back-to-back nights.

Brennan Faulkner led the way for the Petes with two goals, totalling 11. Matthew Soto scored and had an assist against his former team, while Grayden Strohack and Blake Gowan each had two assists. Matthew Perreault scored his first OHL caree goal while Braydon McCallum and Adam Levac added a tally. Kaden McGregor, Novotný and Carson Cameron each picked up an assist. Easton Rye stopped 26 of 28 to get his league-leading 13th win.

The Petes play again on Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre when they host the North Bay Battalion. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Thrash Brampton Steelheads In 7-1 Rout

The Peterborough Petes made a statement against the visiting Brampton Steelheads, routing them 7-1 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The first goal went to the Petes. Adam Novotný swatted at the puck on his backhand, saw it ricochet off a Steelhead’s skate and found the back of the net for a 1-0 game. Just over two minutes later, Aiden Young fought for the puck off the faceoff draw. He won the battle and immediately ripped it point-blank to score 2-0.

Jakub Fibigr helped Brampton get on the board during the power play with a one-timer to beat Petes goaltender Easton Rye to cut the deficit in half. Peterborough sunck in one more goal as Brennan Faulkner chased down a cleared puck from the Petes zone. He corralled it, shot it from a wide angle and scored to give the Petes a two-goal lead headed into the second.

The score remained the same after the middle frame as Brampton had 11 shots to Peterborough’s nine.

The third period was all Peterborough. With the man advantage, the Petes and their number one overall pick, Kaden McGregor, pounced on a rebound from a point shot. He got the puck at a near-impossible angle and fired it in for a 4-1 lead. The Petes were not done scoring just yet as Adam Levac had the puck but was caught between two defenders and fell down. Faulkner helped guide the puck across the crease and Braydon McCallum planted it home for a 5-1 game.

Brampton mishandled a pass in their own zone and after it hit the wall, it came on Levac’s stick. He wristed it past former Petes goaltender Zach Bowen to make it 6-1. The Petes wanted to add one last tally as Colin Fitzgerald won the faceoff and the puck went back to the point with Matthew Perreault. He fired a shot and Matthew Soto deflected the shot and in for a 7-1 game and the eventual final for the Petes winning handily.

The win gives Rye the OHL lead in wins (12) after stopping 34 of 35 shots.

The Petes back at it when they travel to Kingston to take on the Frontenacs at the Slush Puppie Place for 7:05 p.m.

City of Peterborough Receives $50,000 Investment Towards the TELUS Cup

The Ontario Government has invested $50,000 to the City of Peterborough to host Hockey Canada’s TELUS Cup in Peterborough from April 20 to 26.

Peterborough was selected to host the TELUS Cup back on April 23. The event has six elite men’s U18 teams from across the nation battling for the title. The host Peterborough Minor Petes are making their national championship debut.

The City expects the event to generate more than 1,200 total room nights and over $1 million in economic impact, boosting hotels, restaurants, shops and local attractions during the tournament week.

Havelock Receives Ontario Trillium Grant of $145,000 to Revitalize Cordova Mines Outdoor Rink

The Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen has received a $145,000 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to revitalize the Cordova Mines outdoor rink, announced on Friday.

Funds provided by the OTF grant have enabled major repairs to the existing outdoor rink. This provides additional recreation opportunities, including basketball, pickleball, tennis and ball hockey.

“By providing funding for major repairs, we are ensuring this vital community hub is not just saved but transformed into a year-round multi-purpose facility,” said Dave Smith, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP. “This supports active, healthy living and ensures families have a modern, safe, and accessible place to play, whether they are enjoying skating in the winter or ball hockey, pickleball and basketball in the warmer months.”

This funding extends the rink's current seasonal use to year-round multi-purpose.

“On behalf of the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, I want to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for supporting the revitalization of the Cordova Mines Outdoor Rink,” said Mayor Jim Martin. “This beloved attraction in the Hamlet with a Heart of Gold where families come together and pride of place shines and continues to strengthen our local spirit and economy. Peterborough Petes Snap Winning Streak With Road Loss to Barrie Colts

The Peterborough Petes have snapped their five-game winning streak after falling 3-1 to the Barrie Colts at the Sadlon Arena on Saturday night.

The first period was quiet offensively as Petes and Colts goaltenders Easton Rye and Ben Hrebik, respectively, stopped all pucks that came at them. Peterborough had 16 shots to Barrie’s 10 shots.

The Petes drew first blood in the second period as Adam Levac brought it into the offensive zone. With no help, he took it on his own to shoot and scored for a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the frame. Alex Assadourian responded for the Colts just over two minutes later with a shot from the high slot to score on the power play. Just under eight minutes later, Cole Beaudoin received a pass and sniped it top shelf to score, giving Barrie their first lead and the score remained 2-1 going into the third.

Peterborough added another 12 shots to the final frame but could not find the back of the net. Beaudoin struck again with an empty-net goal and the Colts held on for the 3-1 win.

The Petes are at home for their next game on Thursday. They host the Brampton Steelheads for Stranger Things Night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Peterborough Petes Extend Winning Streak to Five After Win Over Sarnia

The Petes extend their winning streak to five games after defeating the Sarnia Sting, 5-3, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

The first goal of the game did not come until very late in the period as Grayden Strohack took a point shot and Colin Fitzgerald deflected the shot in for a 1-0 lead. It was the only score of the stanza.

The second period was a high-scoring affair. It took 36 seconds for Sarnia to tie the game up as Mitch Young scored from the point for a 1-1 tie. Fitzgerald helped Peterborough reclaim the lead on the power play. He was the recipient of a Braydon McCallum cross-ice pass and the former first-round pick one-timed it home for a 2-1 Petes lead.

The Sting had their first lead of the game just around six minutes later, after Easton Walos and Alessandro Di Iorio each had tallies to make the game 3-2 in favour of the visitors.

In the final two minutes of the period, Peterborough surged as they had a five-on-three power play. Just as the first penalty expired, Leon Kolarik wristed one from the high slot for a 3-3 tie game. Just 23 seconds later, Peterborough had an outnumbered attack on the rush and Brody Partridge scored to give the Petes a 4-3 lead going into the final frame.

Sarnia mustered 15 shots on net but Petes goaltender Easton Rye stopped them all. Braydon McCallum added an empty-net goal for a 5-3 win to continue Peterborough’s winning streak.

The Petes look to extend their winning streak on the road against the Barrie Colts at the Sadlon Arena for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Peterborough Petes Defenceman Launches New Community Initiative To Aid Those Underprivileged

Peterborough Petes defenceman Thanasi Marentette is giving back as he has launched a new community initiative, ‘Marentette’s Mission’ to provide essential resources for underprivileged individuals and families in the Peterborough community, announced on Wednesday.

Inspired by his journey with competitive hockey and its values, Thanasi has launched Marentette’s Mission as a donation-driven program dedicated to making a real and lasting difference for those who need support the most.

“I’m very excited to be able to launch Marentette’s Mission tomorrow night at the PMC,” said Marentette. “Peterborough’s become a second home to me over my three years here and I’m very happy to be able to use my platform to be able to donate back. I want to thank Petes fans for their support and encourage everyone to donate if they can.”

For every Thursday night Petes home game from Nov. 13 to Dec. 11, a collection area will be set up in the main lobby of the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Fans can donate new winter jackets, snow pants, boots, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and other winter attire for all ages. Donations can also be dropped off at the Petes Store during regular business hours.

The donations are in support of Street Level Advocacy and the Kawartha Haliburton Children’s Foundation. The first 100 donations will receive a 5” x  7” glossy print or a collector’s card, both signed by Marentette.

Peterborough Petes Roll With Four-Game Win Streak After Defeating the Oshawa Generals

The Petes are on their biggest win streak of the season with four after defeating the rival Oshawa Generals 6-2 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

The home team wasted no time getting on the board as Brennan Faulkner was the recipient of a puck that squeezed out from a board battle and he one-timed it home for a 1-0 lead just 1:46 in. Peterborough kept attacking as Leon Kolarik tried to dump the puck but it went off a General and back on his stick. He fired it from the high slot and scored to make it 2-0 for the Petes at the end of the first period.

Peterborough forced a turnover in their defensive zone and had an outnumbered counterattack. Adam Novotný fed Matthew Soto and he scored to give the Petes a 3-0 lead. Nearly six-and-a-half minutes later, Oshawa found themselves back in the game as Lucas Moore and Onni Kalto scored to bring the Generals to within one after two periods.

The Petes first-overall pick in this year’s priority selection made himself heard as he won the faceoff draw. He stickhandled past several General defenders and scored on an impressive individual effort to give Peterborough a 4-2 lead.

The Petes cleared the puck into the Generals zone and immediately applied pressure. The forecheck worked with hustle from Faulkner who passed it Aiden Young for a goal from the slot to make it 5-2. Faulkner added an empty-netter for his third point of the night and the Petes handily defeat Oshawa 6-2 to continue their hot streak.

Peterborough Petes Trade Forward For Two Draft Picks From Owen Sound

The Peterborough Petes have acquired a third-round pick in 2026 (Ottawa) and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2028 (Kingston) from Owen Sound in exchange for 2007-born forward Caden Taylor, announced on Tuesday.

“On behalf of the Petes, I’d like to thank Caden for his time here in Peterborough,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations. “We wish him the best of luck as he continues his OHL career in Owen Sound.”

The Shanty Bay forward was originally selected by the Sudbury Wolves in the first round, ninth overall, in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. He has appeared in 134 games across parts of three seasons with the Wolves and Petes, scoring 28 goals and adding 29 assists for 57 points.

This past summer, he participated in the Pittsburgh Penguins Development Camp.

The Petes host the rival Oshawa Generals for their Remembrance Day Game in support of Wounded Warriors Canada on Tuesday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
