With no scoring in the first, it only took 83 seconds into the second for the game’s first goal. Kieran Walton dug the puck out from the boards and made a centring pass for Aiden Young. The latter one-timed it home in the slot for a 1-0 game.

Petes defenseman, Carson Cameron, joined the scoring late in the period. As Peterborough’s power play ended, Cameron pounced on a Yaniz Lutz rebound and buried it on a wide-open net for a 2-0 lead. The captain was not done yet as he got another loose puck from a rebound and a mad scramble. He saw another wide-open net and scored his second of the game in the final 16 seconds of the period.

Late in the third, Sudbury was able to break the shutout on the power play. Jan Chovan sniped it from a wide angle to make it 3-1. Just over two-and-a-half minutes later, Leon Kolorik had his own wide-angle bid and found its way in the back of the net for the dagger and eventual 4-1 win.

Petes goaltender Easton Rye made 22 saves, tying the league with his leading 28th win of the season.

Peterborough Petes Give Country Night Fans a Happy Hootenanny In 3-2 Overtime Win Over Owen Sound

It was a jamboree at the Peterborough Memorial Centre for Country Night as the Petes walked off with a 3-2 overtime win over the Owen Sound Attack on Thursday.

The visitors struck first as Cole Zurawski tipped in the puck into a wide-open net after some excellent passing from Owen Sound to make it a 1-0 game. Peterborough responded just under four minutes later on the power play as Kieran Walton, on a give-and-go, scored after a fake toe drag and went top shelf to tie things up. The Petes were on the man advantage again and in the final minute of the first period, Adam Novotný faked a slap shot and gave it to Leon Kolarik instead to score on a wide-open net for a 2-1 lead after the first period.

The second period had no goals as Peterborough had 15 shots on goal to Owen Sound’s nine.

The final frame only had one goal late in the period. Owen Sound had Petes goalie Easton Rye scrambling during their power play. Pierce Mbuyi capitalized on a one-timer to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime.

With less than a minute of the three-on-three overtime period, Walton took matters into his own hands. He entered the zone, peeled back, found an opening and scored to send the home crowd home happy with a win.

Rye stopped 36 shots to record his 27th win of the season.

The Petes stay at home for Saturday’s Pin in the Rink game against the Sudbury Wolves in support of Survivors Abreast. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Alumnus Scores Twice In First Period In NHL Debut

It was a night to remember for former Peterborough Pete Avery Hayes, who scored twice in the first period of his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Thursday night.

Hayes is the third player in penguins history to score multiple times in his NHL debut, joining Jake Guentzel (2G on Nov. 21, 2016) and Rob Brown (2G on Oct. 21, 1987). Photo courtesy of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hayes’s first goal came at 9:18 of the opening period. Penguins defenceman Ilya Solovyov cleared the puck after a faceoff which lead to Hayes blowing by the defence and winning the race to the loose puck for a breakaway. He snapped it past Sabers goaltender Alex Lyon to score his first NHL goal on his first shot of the night.

Hayes was not done making a statement as Penguins defenceman Parker Wotherspoon held the line and dumped the puck into the Sabres' zone. Penguins forward Anthony Mantha gave a one-touch pass to the slot for Hayes and the latter snapped it home for his second goal of the period to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Pittsburgh eventually defeated the Sabres 5-2.

“Honestly, I can't say much right now. I kind of blacked out but it was a big goal for the team which is most important,” said Hayes about his first goal.

Hayes is a two-time OHL Champion with the then Hamilton Bulldogs in 2022 and the Peterborough Petes in 2023. He was traded to the Petes from Hamilton on Jan. 7, 2023. He scored 16 goals and 20 assists in 32 regular-season games for the Petes. The Westland, Mich.-born forward tacked on another 12 goals and seven assists in 22 playoff games, en route to a championship with Peterborough.

Hayes went undrafted in the NHL. He signed a two-year deal with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. He accepted a contract as a free agent with Pittsburgh on March 13.

On the day after his NHL debut, he was reassigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Peterborough Triathlete Tristen Jones Raising Funds For International Races

Local Peterborough triathlete Tristen Jones is fundraising to support his international travel costs as he represents Canada in competitions abroad.

Jones started doing triathlons in the Peterborough area at just 10 years old.

“I’ve spent my entire life in Peterborough. Anybody who lives near me probably knows me as the guy who runs down Ireland Drive,” said Jones in an interview with PTBOCanada.

As he progressed through youth rankings, Jones qualified at the junior level to race for Canada internationally. It was at the North American Junior Champs in 2019 that he placed second.

Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Jones decided to put his athletic ambitions on hold to prioritize his schooling, studying Kinesiology on scholarship at Queen’s University of Charlotte in North Carolina.

Choosing to study Kinesiology was a no-brainer for the athlete, whose parents both pursued degrees in the field.

“One fed into the other throughout my entire life. I’ve always enjoyed sports, and I’ve played every sport possible growing up. That got me into sports science and kinesiology,” said Jones. “Once I started studying it in University, it reinforced my love for what I do.”

After graduating in 2024, Jones continued his training throughout the spring and summer. He went on to compete in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia. The athlete made a goal for himself; if he could make the Triathlon Canada top five ranking during this competition, he would continue to pursue his dreams.

At his second race in China, he placed fifth.

“This reinforced for me that I can do this for real. I’m just going to go for it and see what I can do.”

Donations help Jones continue to pursue his athletic career internationally, where he will participate in races and training across the world.

“As you move up in the world ranking and in the level of competition, you need more time to prepare yourself for those races,” said Jones.  “Any donation or any tickets bought for the raffle is another chance for me to go and experience being a full-time pro athlete, and (compete) to the best of my abilities.”

The raffle runs until Jan. 31 and has a variety of prizes to be won. Tickets can be purchased to support Jones here.

“These results reflect not only individual excellence but also a collective team effort built on dedication, preparation and support from coaches and teammates alike,” said PTBO Swim Club in a press release.

Leading the way were four swimmers who earned Individual High Point Awards in their respective age groups:

  • Benjamin Korkus – 10 Years & Under Male

  • Olivia Jones – 13-14 Year Old Female

  • Owen Stainton – 13-14 Year Old Male

  • Makenzie Decloux – 15 Years & Over Female

Strong runner-up finishes included:

In addition to individual awards, several swimmers achieved championship milestones. Decloux, Jones and Stainton all qualified for the Ontario Age Group Championships in multiple events as a result of their performances. Decloux also secured qualification for the Ontario Swimming Championships taking place in July.

Decloux added another accomplishment to her meet by setting a new PTBO Swim Club record in the Women’s 15 Years & Over Short Course 100 metre Individual Medley. Her time of 1:08.83 shattered the previous club record of 1:11.10, which had stood since 2001 and was set by Jacquelyn Craft.

“Breaking a record that had remained untouched for more than two decades was a defining moment of the meet and a testament to Decloux’s hard work and progression,” said PTBO Swim Club.
