Peterborough Petes Season Ends With 5-4 Double Overtime Loss to North Bay Battalion In Game Six

The Petes' season ended in double overtime as they took a 5-4 loss to the North Bay Battalion, resulting in a 4-2 series loss at the Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens on Saturday night.

The Petes opened the scoring as Yanis Lutz forced a turnover at the North Bay blue line. He drew two defenders in then got the puck to Francis Parish. The latter quickly fed a rushing Leon Kolarik who one-timed it home for a 1-0 Peterborough lead. It stood as the only goal of the period.

The second was all North Bay as discipline problems came to haunt the Petes. The home team tied then took the lead off a pair of power-play goals in the first 10:05 of the period. Just under three minutes later, North Bay had another tally thanks to Ethan Procyszyn and it was a 3-1 game after the second period.

The Petes had to rally in order to avoid elimination and Yanis Lutz got Peterborough started, scoring from the high slot just 5:22 into the period to make it 3-2. Less than a minute later, Peterborough forced another offensive zone turnover and Adam Levac scored on the doorstep to tie the game at three. With just under five minutes left in regulation, Peterborough applied heavy pressure in the offensive zone and caused another turnover. That led to Braydon McCallum getting the puck and immediately dishing it to Kieron Walton for the one-timer goal and 4-3 lead.

North Bay in desperation, pulled their goalie while on the man advantage for six-on-four play. A point shot was saved by Petes goaltender Easton Rye, but the rebound allowed Vaughan to score his second goal of the game with six seconds remaining in regulation.

It took until late in the second overtime period to find a winner. Adam Novotný struggled to corral the puck in his own zone and was checked, leading to a turnover. North Bay took a quick one-timed shot and Vaughan beat Rye for the series walk-off goal to eliminate the Peterborough Petes in six games, 5-4.

Walton and Lutz led the Petes with a goal and an assist each. Kolarik and Levac scored, while Parish, Garrett Frazer and McCallum each had an assist. Easton Rye made 39 saves in the loss.

Alf Curtis Returns As Sponsor For 21st Year to Peterborough Lakers Prior to Season's Start

Twenty-one is the magic number as Alf Curtis Home Improvements has returned for its 21st year as sponsor of the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers ahead of the 2026 season.

“When you think about the modern era of Lakers lacrosse, Alf Curtis has been there from the very beginning,” said Pete Dalliday, Lakers director of community engagement. “Their support helped lay the foundation for everything this organization has become.”

Members from the Lakers recieved their sponsorship cheque at Alf Curtis last week which included Dalliday, Lakers mascot Teddy and Holden Lowes. Lowes suffered a season-ending injury in training camp last year.

“It was great to be back in the store and see that connection is still so strong,” said Dalliday. “That’s what makes partnerships like this so special — it’s real, it’s lasting, and it means something.”

Founder Alf Curtis passed away last fall, not long after the Lakers’ season came to a close. His wife, June Curtis, remains part of that legacy, with the Curtis family maintaining their strong connection to the team.

Alf Curtis’s support has helped fuel one of the most successful eras in franchise history, including multiple Mann Cup championships, according to Dalliday.

“Alf wasn’t just a sponsor, he truly cared about this team and this community,” he said.

Petes Cannot Solve North Bay Goaltending In 3-1 Loss; Peterborough Down 3-2 In Series

The Petes had 45 shots on net but only one found its way through as Peterborough dropped Game Five to the North Bay Battalion, 3-1, to fall 3-2 in the series at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The visitors drew first blood as Lirim Amidovski took a shot from the wing just outside the faceoff circle and was able to wire it past Petes goaltender Easton Rye for a 1-0 lead. Peterborough mustered 12 shots on North Bay goaltender Jack Lisson but was held scoreless throughout the first period.

The second frame only had one goal and it was courtesy of North Bay. Parker Vaughan stole the puck in the Petes zone and he sniped it past Rye for a 2-0 lead. Peterborough put another 20 shots on net but could nto beat Lisson as they remained shut out.

It took the 56th minute of regulation, but Peterborough finally got on the board as Braydon McCallum had a point-blank one-timer that beat Lission and gave the Petes life down only by one goal. Peterborough had 13 shots on net in the final frame but could only score once and surrendered an empty-net goal for the 3-1 loss and 3-2 series in North Bay’s favour.

Peterborough Petes Forward Adam Novotný Nominated For OHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year

Peterborough Petes forward Adam Novotný has been named one of the nominees for the William Hanley Trophy for the OHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year, as voted by the League’s General Managers, announced on Thursday.

Team nominees were required to receive 20 per cent of the vote from General Managers within their own conference to advance to the final ballot as award finalists.

Novotný participated in this year’s World Junior tournament, winning a bronze medal with Czechia. Novotny was a finalist in the categories of best shot, hardest shot and most dangerous in the goal area on this year’s OHL Coaches Poll.

This season, he scored 34 goals and 31 assists for the Peterborough Petes in 58 games.

The Kobylice, Czechia native was originally selected eighth overall by the Petes in the 2024 CHL Import Draft. He signed an OHL Standard Player Agreement with Peterborough last July.

Novotný joins Cole Beaudoin (Barrie Colts), Jimmy Lombardi (Flint Firebirds), Kieren Dervin (Kingston Frontenacs), Jack Van Volsen (Sarnia Sting) and Anthony Cristoforo (Windsor Spitfires) as this year’s nominees.

The OHL is announcing the winner next Thursday.

The Petes return home for Game Five of the first round of the OHL playoff series this Thursday at the Peterborough Memorial Centre at 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Blanked In Game Four; North Bay Ties Series 2-2

The Peterborough Petes put 33 shots on net but none found the back of the net as they were shut out in Game Four by the North Bay Battalion, 4-0, to even the series at two apiece at the Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens on Tuesday night.

The first goal came in the first period with the puck ricocheting off the boards from a point shot. It ended up on Cam Warren’s stick in the slot and he scored to make it 1-0 for North Bay. Ryder Cali joined the scoring for the Battalion as he pickpocketed Kieron Walton and buried it to make it 2-0 after the first. Easton Rye was peppered with 16 shots in that frame.

North Bay struck again in the second period as Warren made a centring pass to Parker Vaughan, who was all alone in front and made no mistake for a 3-0 lead. Rye faced only eight shots that period but allowed one to go by him.

North Bay got the cherry on top just under eight minutes into the period as Nick Wellenreiter got a deflected puck on his stick and he rifled it through traffic, including Rye, for a North Bay four-goal game and win.

U11AA Peterborough Petes Go On Undefeated Run To Capture OMHA Championship

The U11AA Peterborough Petes were flawless in capturing the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) Championship title, defeating the Caledon Hawks, 3-1, at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby on Sunday afternoon.

The Petes faced off against the South Simcoe Storm as the opening game of the tournament on Friday morning. Peterborough won by a score of 4-2 with a three-goal surge in the third period. They were also the last game of the day, capping off the night with a 6-4 victory over the Flamborough Sabres. Both teams traded pairs of goals throughout the game but Peterborough scored twice late in the game to seal the win.

The Petes had only one game on Saturday against the Richmond Hill Jaguars. Peterborough was down 2-1 going into the final frame but they scored three times including three power play goals for a 4-3 win to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

The semifinals were against the Oakville Rangers on Sunday morning. While the game was close, Peterborough never relinquished the lead and punched their ticket to the finals with a 4-3 win.

The finals were a battle of the undefeated as the Petes faced the Caledon Hawks. Peterborough scored the first three goals, including two in the second half of the third period. The Hawks finally responded with a score in the final 40 seconds of regulation but it was too little, too late and Peterborough completed their undefeated run to win the OMHA championship.

PTBO Women’s Initiative Network Inc Formed to Support Local Athletes Competing in Ireland

A new community-driven initiative, the PTBO Women’s Initiative Network Inc (PTBO WIN), has formed to support local athletes who have been selected to compete on the Canada 2 team at the 2026 Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) World Games in Waterford, Ireland this July.

Local athletes Zoe King, Ciara Gunn, Michelle Schevers and Tash Ennis, all members of the Peterborough GAA club, have been selected to compete on the Canada 2 team.

PTBO WIN originally came together to rally behind these athletes in their fundraising efforts. While the immediate focus is helping send the women to compete on the international stage, the network says they have a long-term vision of advocating for and supporting local women in pursuing their goals, whether in sport, business or beyond.

“What started as a couple of women meeting at a networking breakfast quickly turned into a dedicated group of women committed to supporting other women in the community,” said PTBO WIN President, Kelly Carbajal. “We recognized very quickly that there is a real need in the area for women pursuing their goals and dreams. Our hope is that the Ptbo Women’s Initiative Network can make a meaningful difference for these incredible athletes and for so many more women in the future.”

PTBO WIN aims to raise $20,000 to support these athletes and their journey to the World Games, including training, travel, and ongoing skill development by focusing on three main initiatives:

This event will feature local food vendors, live music, shopping and an opportunity to meet the athletes and PTBO WIN members.

Running now through July 1, PTBO WIN is calling on 100 community members or businesses to support local athletes by contributing $100 each, helping to directly fund their World Games journey.

Admission: $20 entry including a free drink or $40 for families (2 adults and 2 kids)

This send-off celebration will feature food and drink sales, a silent auction, live music and a Gaelic football demonstration with opportunities to engage and play alongside local athletes. Attendees can expect interactive challenges, prizes and a vibrant, community-focused atmosphere to help send these athletes off in style.

Kieran Walton Plays Overtime Hero Twice to Give Peterborough Petes 2-1 Series Lead Over North Bay

Kieran Walton played overtime hero not once but twice, winning Games 2 and 3 for the Peterborough Petes to take a 2-1 series lead over the North Bay Battalion.

On Friday, the Peterborough Petes hosted Game 2 after being down one game in the best-of-seven series.

Walton scored on the backhand after receiving a centring pass just under 14 minutes into overtime to give Peterborough a 4-3 win and tie the series at 1-1.

Brennan Faulkner, Braydon McCallum and Walton each had a goal and an assist, Adam Levac had two helpers. Francis Parish scored while Calum Hartnell, Aiden Young and Grayden Strohack each tacked on an assist. Easton Rye stopped 40 of 43 shots for his first career playoff win.

The Peterborough Petes travelled to the Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens in North Bay for Game three with the series evened on Sunday afternoon.

Peterborough scored in the first 12 seconds of regulation for an early 1-0 lead thanks to Levac. He shot it from the high slot which was saved but he chopped at his own rebound and found the back of the net for a 1-0 game.

The visitors had a late power play in the second period but a Pete blew a tire which allowed the Battalion to counter on the rush. They had an outnumbered attack despite being a man short and scored to make it 1-1.

In the dying seconds of the third period, Walton had the chance to win it in regulation but was denied. Unable to reach a decision, the game went to overtime.

No one had scored for the first 15:39 of the extra frame but North Bay goaltender Mike McIvor had a costly match penalty for roughing that gave the Petes a five-minute power play.

Walton capitalized on his second chance, scoring uncontested on a one-timer from the faceoff circle and gave the Petes a 2-1 win and 2-1 series lead.

Walton had a two-point afternoon with a goal and an assist, Levac scored and both Garrett Frazer and Adam Novotný got an assist. Rye made a few highlight-reel saves, stopping 47 of 48 shots for his second-career OHL playoff win.

The series continues with game four back at the Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens on Tuesday with puck drop for 7:05 p.m.
