Peterborough U14 AA Wolverines Capture Dan Grossi Memorial Cup in London

The Peterborough U14 AA Wolverines are Ontario Summer Football League champions after defeating the London Jr Mustangs 35-14 in the Dan Grossi Memorial Cup on Friday at Western Alumni Stadium in London.

The Wolverines capped off their season with an impressive championship victory over the Jr Mustangs, bringing home the Dan Grossi Memorial Cup after a 35-14 win in the Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) final.

Peterborough entered the playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 6-4 record, placing fourth in the OSFL East Division. London also finished fourth in its division, posting a 5-5 record in the West before advancing to the championship game.

The title game was played at Western Alumni Stadium, where the Wolverines finished their season on top with a convincing win.

The championship is named in memory of Dan Grossi, the late president of the Toronto Jr. Argonauts, who was widely recognized for his dedication to youth football and his commitment to supporting young athletes and their families throughout the football community.

The victory caps off a memorable season for the Wolverines, who turned a 6-4 regular season into an OSFL championship and will bring the Dan Grossi Memorial Cup back to Peterborough.

Trent Excalibur Send Two Players and a Coach To Represent Canada at 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship

Student-athletes Maddy Baxter, Maggie Cuddy and head coach Jocelyne Lemay of the Trent Excalibur women’s lacrosse program are representing Canada at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 to Aug. 2.

“This is an incredible moment for our championship program," said Nathan McFadden, director of Athletics and Recreation at Trent University. "To have two student-athletes and our head coach representing Canada at this international tournament playing against the best teams and players in the world speaks to the level of high-performance players and standard of excellence within Trent Excalibur women's lacrosse. We're extremely proud of Maddy, Maggie, and Jocelyne. Their determination, passion, and professionalism have been instrumental in shaping our program, and we know they will represent both Canada and Trent with tremendous pride while serving as outstanding global ambassadors for our university.”

Entering her second year in the Nursing program at Trent, Baxter has helped Canada defend its gold-medal standard at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, captured a silver medal at the 2022 World Championship after recording 15 points (nine goals, six assists) and previously represented Canada at the 2019 U19 World Cup. In 2025, she was named the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Rookie of the Year after helping the team earn an OUA Gold Medal.

“It's taken a lot of dedication, training, and commitment. I am excited to see all that hard work come together and get back on the field with my teammates,” said Baxter. “My experience at Trent has played a big role in preparing me for this opportunity. Competing at a high level, learning from great coaches and being surrounded by supportive teammates have helped me grow both as an athlete and as a person. It's also pretty special to represent Team Canada alongside my head coach and a teammate from Trent. Having familiar faces by my side makes the experience even more special.”

Cuddy helped Team Canada reach the gold medal game at the World Lacrosse U20 Championship in Hong Kong before representing Canada again at the 2025 World Lacrosse Super Sixes. Cuddy will begin her first season with the Trent Excalibur this fall as she starts her Master of Health Care Management at Trent University.

Lemay helped Canada capture the 2019 World Championship title as a player and, after taking over the Excalibur program in 2024, she guided the team to the 2025 OUA Championship and has continued to establish the program as one of Canada's premier university lacrosse teams.

Inaugural Steve Terry Classic a Success, Capped Off by Peterborough 9U AAA Tigers Championship Win

The Peterborough 9U AAA Tigers captured the championship at the inaugural Steve Terry Classic over the weekend, giving the host city plenty to celebrate.

Peterborough earned a 2-0 victory over the Mississauga Twins in the semifinal before defeating the Scarborough Stingers 24-7 in the championship game to claim the tournament title.

The Steve Terry Classic, held in Peterborough from July 23 to 26, brought teams from across Ontario together for a weekend of youth baseball while also supporting local youth mental health initiatives through the PRHC Foundation.

Peterborough teams were well represented throughout the tournament, with local teams participating ranging from 8U A up to 11U AA. The Peterborough 11U AA Tigers also reached their championship game, finishing as runners-up after a hard-fought loss to Northumberland in the final.

The championship win capped off a memorable first edition of the Steve Terry Classic, with the host association celebrating both a successful tournament and a title for its 9U AAA Tigers.

Peterborough Jr. C Lakers Move Within One Win of Meredith Cup Final

The Peterborough Jr. C Lakers are one victory away from the Meredith Cup Final after opening their semifinal series with a pair of home wins over the Cornwall Celtics this weekend.

Peterborough earned an 8-5 victory in Game 1 on Saturday before following it up with a 10-5 win on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Goaltender Braden Hockaday picked up both wins, helping hold the Celtics to five goals in each game. The Lakers also outshot Cornwall 43-34 in Saturday's opener and 51-42 in Game 2.

Saturday's series opener was a tightly played game early, with Peterborough carrying a 1-0 lead into the second period before pulling away with seven goals over the final two periods. Kennen Withers scored twice, while Ryder Perry and Braxtin Howard each finished with two goals and two assists. Logan Giroux and Jordan Garfat also scored.

The Lakers carried that momentum into Sunday's game, building a 2-1 lead after the first period before extending their advantage with four goals in both the second and third periods. Perry led the offence with a hat trick and three assists, while Howard scored twice. Kennen Withers, Ryder Evans, Owen Thake and Ricky Bevan also found the back of the net.

Peterborough will have its first opportunity to clinch a berth in the Meredith Cup Final when Game 3 is played Friday at 8:30 pm in Cornwall. If necessary, Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday at 5 pm, with a deciding Game 5 set for Sunday at 2 pm, also in Cornwall.

The winner of the series will advance to the Meredith Cup Final. The other semifinal between the Whitby Warriors and Six Nations Stealth is tied at one game apiece.

The Kawartha Lacrosse U9 1 team earned a silver medal at the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse (OWFL) Provincial Championship in Kitchener-Waterloo last weekend.

The team entered the provincial tournament after finishing the regular season in 12th place in the 15-team league with a 3-7 record.

Kawartha advanced to the U9 B Final after a 20-8 semifinal victory over the Toronto Beaches. The team battled the Mimico Mountaineers in the championship game, falling 14-10 to earn the silver medal.

Team members included Ellie Abramczyk, Meyer Abramczyk, Andie Armstrong, Bailey Carroll, Sophie Clarke, Quinn Currie, Zoe Dunn, Frankie Evans, Axelle Keating, Bridgette Reed, Charlotte Miller, Quinn Plunkett, Vanessa Van Dolder and Brynn White.

The team was coached by Sam Berardi and Dionne Kingdon, with Stephanie Armstrong serving as manager. Kristie Abramczyk and Shannon Carroll served as trainers, with Fred Blowes also supporting the team.

The U9 1 team’s silver medal was one of three provincial podium finishes for Kawartha Lacrosse teams last weekend. The U13 team also earned a silver medal at the OWFL Provincials in Kitchener-Waterloo, while the JEWL Elite team captured silver at provincials in Peterborough.

The U15 and U19 teams will compete for their provincial championships in Oakville from August 7-9.

The team was coached by head coach Geoff McKinley, along with coaches Matt Temple and Tara King. Karen Evans served as trainer.

The U13 team’s provincial run capped off the season, while the Kawartha Lacrosse JEWL Elite team also earned a silver medal at provincials last weekend in Peterborough.

The U15 and U19 teams will compete for their provincial championships in Oakville from August 7-9.

Lakers Move Back into Fourth With Big Win Over Kodiaks

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers strengthened their playoff position Thursday night, defeating the Cobourg Kodiaks 8-4 to move back into fourth place in the Major Series Lacrosse standings while keeping their hopes of a third-place finish alive.

The win gives Peterborough the season series and tiebreaker over Cobourg, leaving the Lakers just two points behind the third-place Kodiaks with three regular season games remaining.

The highest the Lakers can finish is third. That would set up a first-round playoff series against the second-place Oakville Rock. If they remain in fourth, they'll open the postseason against the undefeated Six Nations Chiefs, who have yet to lose a game this season.

Peterborough pulled away in the third period after a tightly contested game through the opening 40 minutes.

The Lakers led 3-1 early before Cobourg battled back to make it 4-3. Peterborough then took control, scoring four unanswered goals in the third period to seal the victory.

Colton Armitage continued his strong play with the Lakers, recording his second straight hat trick while adding two assists for a five-point night. Thomas Hoggarth also had a big offensive performance with two goals and two assists, while Holden Cattoni chipped in a goal and two helpers.

Justin Sykes, Daniel Clark and Braedon Saris each scored once, while Ryan Lanchbury recorded two assists. Rob Hellyer, Brad McCulley and Dylan Hutchison each added one assist.

The biggest difference, however, came in goal.

Drew Hutchison turned aside 49 shots to earn the win and was named the game's first star as he repeatedly frustrated the Kodiaks' offence.

Before the game, the Lakers recognized the 1986 Peterborough Jr. A Maulers with a pre-game ceremony. Members of the Minto Cup championship team were honoured on the floor, while current Lakers wore throwback jerseys during warmups that were later presented to the alumni.

The Lakers now have three regular season games remaining as they continue their push for playoff positioning.

Peterborough is back in action tonight when it visits the Brampton Excelsiors before travelling to Six Nations on Tuesday. The Lakers will then wrap up the regular season next Thursday at home against the last-place Owen Sound North Stars on Fan Appreciation Night.

Peterborough Lakers Bringing Toonie Dog Night Back for Tonight's Retro Night Game Against Cobourg

After setting a Peterborough Memorial Centre record earlier this season, the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers are bringing back Toonie Dog Night for tonight’s Retro Night game set to take place at 8pm against the Cobourg Kodiaks.

craig meredith set the individual record during the lakers inaugural toonie dog night last month, eating 18 hot dogs. he says although he will be attending tonight’s game, he’ll be taking it easy on the dogs as he wants to give somebody else a shot at the title.

Fans snapped up 924 hot dogs during the team's first-ever Toonie Dog Night on June 4th, setting a new record for the most hot dogs sold during a lacrosse game at the PMC.

Now, the promotion returns on Thursday, July 23rd, as the Lakers host Retro Night presented by Lansdowne Place.

This time, the team has set its sights even higher. The goal is to sell 1,386 hot dogs, a number chosen to honour the 1986 Lansdowne Place Maulers, who will be recognized during the evening's festivities.

The original promotion drew long concession lineups and created a lively atmosphere throughout the game, with fans taking advantage of the $2 hot dog special while cheering on the Lakers.

The team also recognized the support of Maple Leaf Foods, Levy Canada, The Real Canadian Superstore and the City of Peterborough for helping make the promotion possible.

The fifth place Lakers (7-7) will host the third place Cobourg Kodiaks (9-7) for tonight’s Retro Night game, with tickets for the game are available through the Peterborough Memorial Centre Box Office or online via Ticketmaster.

Jr. C Lakers Set for Meredith Cup Semifinal Series Beginning at Home on Saturday

The Peterborough Jr. C Lakers will begin their Meredith Cup semifinal series this weekend when they host the Cornwall Celtics at Healthy Planet Arena.

After capturing the Central Division championship with an 8-7 win over the Whitby Warriors on Friday night, the Lakers will now turn their attention to the best-of-five semifinal series against Cornwall.

Game 1 is set for Saturday, July 25 at 8:30 pm at Healthy Planet Arena, with Game 2 scheduled for Sunday, July 26 at 8 pm in Peterborough. The start time for Game 2 could be adjusted to 7:30 pm.

The series then shifts to Cornwall for the remainder of the schedule. If necessary, Game 4 will be played Saturday, August 1 at 5 pm, following Game 3 on Friday, July 31 at 8:30 pm. If the series reaches a deciding Game 5, it will be played Sunday, August 2 at 2 pm in Cornwall.

The Lakers are now just one series win away from another appearance in the Meredith Cup final as they continue their pursuit of a third straight league championship.

Kawartha Lacrosse U19 Elite Earn Silver at OWFL Provincials

The Kawartha Lacrosse U19 JEWL Elite team capped off an impressive playoff run with a silver medal finish at the Ontario Women's Field Lacrosse provincial championships, turning a 3-7 regular season into one of the tournament's biggest success stories.

The provincial championship tournament was originally scheduled to be played in Kitchener, but was relocated to Trent University's Justin Chiu Stadium in Peterborough because of poor air quality caused by northern Ontario wildfires.

Kawartha advanced to the championship game after defeating the Toronto Beaches in the semifinal before falling to Halton Hills in the final to earn the silver medal.

The result marked a significant achievement for the squad, which entered the postseason after a 3-7 regular season and put together a strong run against some of the province's top competition.

The silver medal-winning roster featured Brea Leahy, Addisyn Hartwick, Paityn Evans, Mackenna Hancock, Jocelyn Jessup, McKayla Kendall, Allie Arnott, Tilly Alderson, Keira Delaplante, Lizzie Temple, Aislyn Bowen, Audrey Martone, Grace Fisher, Ryann Lundrigan, Grace Gifford, Addison Hulsman, Kiera Kelly, Isabelle Fairfield, Maren Dueck and Sylvia Ready.

The team was led by head coach Jocelyne Lemay and coach Victoria Clark.
