Socks For Chad Donates 605 Pairs Of Socks To One Roof Community Centre

Socks for Chad, a Peterborough organization, made their annual donation to One Roof Community Centre in December, giving them a total of 605 pairs of socks.

Socks for Chad was started by Tammy Ruffo in honour of her son, Chad, who passed away in 2015.

Ruffo collects socks all year round to donate in December, in time for cold weather an Christmas.

Friends, family and community members donate socks as well as money to purchase socks.

In 2021 Socks for Chad collected a record breaking 605 pairs to donate to One Roof Community Centre who will distribute them to those in need.

Ruffo hopes that 2022 will garner even more socks than last year and be able to keep even more people warm.

In a post to the Socks for Chad Facebook group Ruffo wrote ‘Thank you so much for helping this grieving mom reach and surpass my goals to beat last year’s. I could not have done this without each and every one of you! Between all the sock donations a e-transfers we did it!’

Darling Insurance Donates $16,500 To Five Local Charities In Partnership With Other Local Brokerages

Darling Insurance and Sentinel Risk Insurance, along with the support of Hamilton Township Mutual Insurance and Gore Mutual Insurance made a donation of $16,500 to five local charities over the holidays.

The four local businesses split the donation between One Roof Community Centre, YWCA Peterborough-Haliburton Nourish Program, The Salvation Army, Women’s Resources in Lindsay, and Feed The Need in Havelock.

“We’ve always tried to help to meet the need for food insecurities - especially around Christmas,” said Glenn “Typically we would do one or two bigger donations but this year we thought we’d try to spread it out farther across the community.”

Millar notes that some organizations may be having a hard time fundraising due to gathering restrictions, so he hopes that this donation will be a welcome one.

“We really try to support local business and charities,” he said. “This year we made a big list of charities we’ve helped, because we wanted our employees to see that and be proud of working here - when I saw it even I was blown away. We just really want to thank our staff, we’re able to do it because of the work they do.”

United Way Of The City Of Kawartha Lakes Receives $40,000 From Crayola Canada

Crayola Canada presented a cheque for $40,000 to United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes this week.

While COVID has forced the cancellation of many charitable special events corporations like Crayola Canada still supported United Way.

In addition to the $40,000 donation, employees raised $6,818.96 through their workplace campaign. This is the highest workplace campaign for Crayola to date.

“Our company has had a long-standing relationship supporting United Way CKL - more than 30 years. We are dedicated to our commitment toward corporate social responsibility in the community. We know people in our community need help more than ever as we move through the pandemic and we are proud that we can continue to support the important efforts of the UWCKL” said Paul Murphy, General Manager of Crayola Canada.

Although the annual Crayola Sale has had to be cancelled for a second year in a row, United Way Executive Director, Penny Barton Dyke said, “Crayola has always been outstanding in its support of our work and we have developed a deeper partnership through the Edwin Binney’s Community Garden. The garden is a multi-pronged approach to issues of food security and supporting food programs and in addition it is an education centre. With the use of this land owned by Crayola, we have produced over 34,400 pounds of food to date that has been donated to agencies to help fight hunger in Kawartha Lakes and in Haliburton areas.”

Two Peterborough Men Receive YMCA Peace Medal to Honour Their Contributions to the Community

YMCA Peace week is Nov. 13 - 20. This year Dave Morello of Morello’s Independent and David McNab, a retired Ontario Provincial Police Officer have received YMCA Peace Medals.

Each year, the YMCA of Central East Ontario honours local Peacemakers with a YMCA Peace Medal at several community events across the region.

YMCA Peace Medals are presented to individuals or groups who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, demonstrate a commitment to the values of PEACE through contributions made within their local, national, or global community.

Dave Morello has been the owner/operator of Morello’s Your Independent Grocers since August of 2000.

Morello volunteers with and makes charitable contributions to organizations such as Easter Seals, Rotary Club of Peterborough, Five Counties Peterborough and Hospice Peterborough.

He is also a longtime YMCA Board Member and Chair of the YMCA Strong Kids/Your Y is Here Campaign.

Morello has been recognized for his outstanding community work with a number of awards, including the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medallion, Peterborough and District Volunteer of the Year, Peterborough Business Citizen of the Year, Top 20 Most Influential Person in Peterborough, among many others.

McNab is a retired Ontario Provincial Police Officer, Trent University Professor and community activist.

He and his wife Kristy were instrumental in founding Salaam Peterborough, a group of families who came together to sponsor a refugee family from Syria.

When an 18 year old Syrian refugee living alone in Turkey named Rashid posted a plea on Facebook he was subject to abuse and racism in the comments. In seeing this McNab immediately wanted to help Rashid to pursue his dream of studying to become an engineer.

He has been working with Rashid to improve his English with the help of Trent University by providing structured lessons and fundraising to bring Rashid to Canada.

McNab also drove across the nation in a Lamborghini to help a young cancer survivor, and has participated in the Pedal for Hope Campaign. He was also part of a massive Christmas Toy Drive for young children that supported various organizations including the New Canadians Centre.

A virtual ceremony will take place on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. via Zoom to honour Morello, McNab and other recipients of the 2021 YMCA Peace Medal. This event is free and open to all.

LOVE YOU Shoppers Drug Mart Campaign to Support YWCA

Proceeds from the 20th annual LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart campaign in Peterborough will support local YWCA services for women experiencing gender-based violence.

Until Friday, Nov. 5, customers have the opportunity to purchase and personalize a $1 leaf, $5 butterfly, $10 apple, or a $50 bird in support of the YWCA. Icons will be displayed in each store’s front window for the duration of the campaign.

“We’re honoured and grateful to have been selected as Shoppers Drug Mart’s charity of choice again this year,” said YWCA’s Ria Nicholson. “Unfortunately, violence against women tends to increase leading up to the holiday season. Our community’s compassionate support will ensure that emergency shelter and crisis supports continue to be available for women in need.”

YWCA Peterborough Haliburton offers an array of women-centred programs, including Crossroads Shelter, which provides 24 hour emergency shelter, meals and support to women, with and without children, who are fleeing abuse of any kind (physical, emotional, sexual or financial), 365 days a year.

“Our community’s response so far this year has been truly heartening,” said Mohan Joshi, Pharmacist/Owner of the Shoppers Drug Marts on Lansdowne Street and Chemong Road in Peterborough. “It’s a pleasure to partner with the YWCA and to be able to raise awareness about such an important local resource for women.”

The LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart fall fundraising program to grow women’s health is a four-week program held across Canada each fall. In support of leading women’s health organizations, customers, staff and Associate-Owners at over 1,360 Shoppers Drug Mart/Phamaprix/Wellwise locations raise funds through the purchase and personalization of the fall program paper icons.

Selwyn Couple and Local Charities Win Over $27,000 From Lions Club Raffle

The Lions Club lived up to their motto of “We Serve” as the Fowlers Corners’ branch ran their “Catch the Ace” raffle where over $27,000 was given to a lucky couple and local charities on Tuesday.

The Ace was caught at the end of September by Dave and Barb Edgerton of Selwyn, who won the jackpot of $13,333. Clients of four charities including Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Peterborough; Five Counties Children's Centre; Hospice Peterborough and YMCA Peterborough Haliburton won a share of $14,400.

The contest was launched in April to help local charities continue their work by supporting those in need in our community.

Ticket sales will also support activities for children on the waiting list at Big Brothers Big Sisters Peterborough; treatment for children with physical, development and communication needs at Five Counties Children’s Centre; care for people who are at end-of-life at Hospice Peterborough; and, help local women and their children escaping gender-based violence at YWCA Peterborough Haliburton.

“Lions’ fundraising activities have been significantly impacted by Covid-19 the past two years so new opportunities were explored. In the absence of face-to-face fundraising, we turned to the internet and options for the public to participate in our fundraising from home,” said Chris Allen, Lions Club president “A Catch the Ace raffle seemed like a reasonable opportunity and fortunately it helped us raise funds for four very important local organizations. The support of the public in this fundraiser was both key to its success and appreciated.”

Lindsay Creative Quilters' Guild and Five Counties Children's Centre are Hosting an Online Auction

The Lindsay Creative Quilters' Guild and Five Counties Children's Centre are working together to present their online Fall Auction, which is live until Friday.

There are over 100 items up for auction, with the majority of them being handmade.

Items available include hand knit sweaters and mittens, quilts, Christmas stockings and much more.

All items have been donated, meaning 100 per cent of the proceeds will support the treatment of children who attend Five Counties.

Five Counties provides therapy services that assist children who are delayed in their development to develop the skills they need in everyday life such as walking, talking, and activities of daily living.

Some of these services are speech therapy and physiotherapy. The centre also provides assessment for children suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Colossal Pumpkins Earn Donations For Local Shelter

The Brock Mission will not be scared this Halloween as $400 from the sale of two colossal pumpkins will go towards the shelter sold on Thursday.

Pete Dalliday and Dani Guppy of 100.5 Fresh Radio put out a call to Peterborough to buy the pumpkins to support the shelter and quickly found homes.

Canadian Tire PitStop and PTBOCanada purchased the two pumpkins for $100 each with all proceeds going to Brock Mission. Dale Strano of Farmboy Markets Ltd. matched the raised money totalling $400.

The pumpkins were donated by a frequent customer to Farmboy where Strano quickly put them on display.

“A great customer of ours came down and was willing to put these here,” he said. “(They) hoped that they could get the donation for the Brock Mission and help with Thanksgiving dinners.”

City of Peterborough Announces 2022 Community Grant Program

Peterborough City Council that the application process for the 2022 Community Grant Program will open in October announced on Wednesday.

The Community Grants program provides financial assistance to non-profit, community-based organizations that provide direct programs, services or activities that enhance the quality of life for Peterborough residents in the areas of social services and health, arts, culture, heritage, recreation or the environment.

Each year Peterborough City Council dedicates funds to be allocated to various community groups within the City. All grants are subject to evaluation and final approval by Council.

There are three streams of grants available.

The Community Project Grant offers $250 - $1,000 and is intended to be used to kickstart a project or special event.

The Community Investment Grant offers $1,000 - $15,000 to support larger projects or special events, specific programs of larger organizations, or operating budgets.

The Community Service Grant is not available through the application process. Eligible organizations will be identified by City staff and approved by Council. They will be required to enter into a Service Contract with the City in order to receive the funding. This grant will offer support for municipally mandated services for which the requested amount is more than $15,000.

Youth Group Prepares to Welcome 78 Afghan Refugees to Peterborough

The New Canadians Centre (NCC) Youth Welcome Team prepared signs and cards for the 78 Afghan refugees coming to Peterborough, on Thursday.

The group met at the Silver Bean Café, with NCC group leader and youth worker Lubna Sadek to help make Peterborough a more welcoming place for the refugees.

“We’re very pleased with the positive response from the community regarding the refugees arriving,” she said.

The Youth Welcome Team meets once a month to plan projects and activities to welcome new Canadians to Peterborough.

They allow high school students to complete the required 40 hours of volunteer work they need to graduate and has approximately ten members.

“I’m a refugee too,” said Sidra Abdulla, a 16-year-old member of the welcome team. “When I came to Canada I saw a lot of people help me so I like to give back too.”

Almost 2000 Afghan refugees have arrived in Toronto according to an NCC press release. COSTI Immigrant Services, the main settlement agency in Toronto, has asked the NCC to support the settlement of 78 Afghans.

Andy Cragg, NCC executive director says they anticipate many newcomers will stay in Peterborough for four to eight weeks but will ultimately settle in Toronto.

During their stay in Peterborough, the NCC provides them with temporary housing, helps meet their basic needs, delivers basic orientations to life in Canada and help them find permanent accommodations.

Until the NCC is able to meet the newcomers on Friday, they will not know exactly what their needs are. For now, the NCC is asking those interested in helping drop off welcome cards to their office at 221 Romaine St.

Landlords and property managers who can provide affordable and safe housing for refugees are asked to contact the NCC at ncc@nccpeterborough.ca

Currently, the NCC does not have the capacity to process donations. They will post a call for items after they are able to assess the newcomer’s needs.
