Bancroft Man Arrested For Impaired Driving that Resulted In a Hydro Pole Collision

A 20-year-old Bancroft man is facing impaired charges after a single-vehicle collision into a hydro pole early Saturday morning.

At roughly 3:10 a.m., officers were called to a vehicle that had struck a hydro pole at Water Street and Langton Street. Officers located the driver and conducted a roadside test.

The arrested and charged with:

• Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

• Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

• Careless Driving (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. 

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 30.

Peterborough Police Warn Public of Surfacing Scam With Fraudulent Government Officials or Law Enforcement Officers

The Peterborough Police Service is warning residents after learning of a scam in which people pretend to be government officials or law enforcement officers demanding money.

Earlier this week, officers with the Fraud Unit learned of a scam in which a Peterborough resident lost over $43,000. 

It started off with a phone call from someone claiming to be a government official with the High Commission of India in Canada and that the victim was a suspect in a money laundering investigation in India. The victim was told not to tell anyone, or they would be charged. As the scam continued, the victim was asked to answer a phone call every day at 8:00 a.m. for a month and engaged in several other communications in which the person on the other end of the phone appeared to be wearing a police uniform.  The victim was eventually persuaded to send money in cryptocurrency to clear their name. 

Earlier this year, another resident was scammed out of over $15,000 after being contacted similarly and being told they were a suspect in a money laundering investigation. In this case the victim was asked to purchase gift cards.

Officers with the Fraud Unit remind residents that fraud and scams are constant and often encourage secrecy, pressure to act and requests for money to avoid charges or jail time.  

Government and law enforcement agencies do not accept cryptocurrencies and do not request payment. 

The Peterborough Police have released these tips to stay scam safe:

• Talk to trusted individuals about what is going on

• Do your own research

• Don’t give in to urgency

• Don’t give any money

• Be extra cautious

• Think it might be a scam? Report it to your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

Peterborough Man Charged After Hitting Pedestrian With Vehicle After Failing to Yield

A 75-year-old Peterborough man was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian after a collision at Townsend Street and Aylmer Street on Thursday.

The collision happened at roughly 5:45 p.m. The pedestrian was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Peterborough Man Wanted On Warrants Arrested For Break-and-Enter

A 40-year-old Peterborough man wanted on warrants is facing a new charge after officers were called to a break-and-enter on Wednesday afternoon.

At roughly 3:50 p.m., officers were called to a residence in the Aylmer Street and Sherbrooke Street. The owner returned, noticed a door open and saw someone inside. Officers located a man on the second floor and took him into custody. They further learned that the man was wanted on two warrants for three counts of failing to attend court, failing to comply with an appearance notice, failing to adhere to a release order, two counts of breaking and entering a dwelling house – commit an indictable offence and failing to comply with probation.

The man was arrested on the strength of the warrants and further charged with:

• Break, enter a dwelling house with intent to commit indictable offence

The accused is being held in custody and appeared in court on Thursday.

Two Peterborough Men Arrested and Charged After Drug Investigation

Two people have been arrested after a drug investigation conducted by Peterborough Police Service Intelligence and Drug Unit along with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) on Tuesday.

Both Units executed a drug warrant at 196 Park Street N. and arrested a 20-year-old man on drug charges and a 42-year-old man on bail violations.

Officers seized:

• 32.4grams of Cocaine

• Canadian currency

The 20-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine

• Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court

A 42-year-old Peterborough man located within the residence was found to violate a release order and was arrested and charged with:

• Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court

Both accused are held in custody and appeared in court on Wednesday.

Peterborough Man Given Three Charges From Motor Scooter/Vehicle Collision From Nov. 9

A 33-year-old Peterborough man is facing three charges in connection with a motor vehicle collision in which the driver of a scooter was struck on Nov. 9.

At roughly 12:05 p.m., there was a collision involving a scooter and motor vehicle on Crawford Drive in the area of Johnston Drive. The driver of the scooter suffered serious injuries and was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre before being transferred to a Toronto hospital.

On Monday, the 33-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

• Fail to stop at accident resulting in bodily harm

• Careless driving causing bodily harm (Highway Traffic Act)

• Operate unsafe vehicle (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 30.

Peterborough Woman Arrested From Two Theft Incidents

A 38-year-old Peterborough woman is facing charges in connection with two recent theft incidents this past weekend.

On Friday, officers with Community F.I.R.S.T. were called to a store in the Aylmer Street and Charlotte Street area regarding a theft that occurred on Thursday evening. Several items were taken from the store and officers reviewed information and identified a suspect.

On Saturday, officers with Community F.I.R.S.T. were reviewing an online theft report and recognized the same suspect as the person wanted in connection with the theft on Friday.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

• Theft Under $5000 X2

• Fail to Comply with Probation Order x8

• Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court

The accused is currently bound by four probation orders with conditions including: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to remain away from all Shoppers Drug Mart stores in Peterborough. 

The accused is currently bound by a release order with the following condition: to remain in their residence between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court on Sunday, at which time the accused was remanded into custody.  The accused will appear in court on Monday.

Two Men Arrested After Police Located Stolen Vehicle From Rental Car Company

Two men are facing charges after a stolen rental car was found on Wednesday night.

At roughly 8 p.m., general patrol officers in the Lansdowne Street West and Dobbin Road area were alerted by the Automated License Plate Reader to a vehicle reported stolen from a rental company. The officers conducted a traffic stop and took two people into custody. 

As a result of the investigation:

The driver, a 60-year-old Township of Cavan-Monaghan man, was arrested and charged with:

• Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code

The accused was released on an appearance notice and will appear in court on Dec. 23. 

The passenger, a 66-year-old Peterborough man, was arrested and charged with:

• Theft of Motor Vehicle

• Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Methamphetamine

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 23.

Peterborough Man Arrested After Stabbing Incident Involving Two Victims

A 30-year-old Peterborough male is facing weapons charges after police responded to a report of a stabbing on Saturday.

At roughly 3:30 a.m., the Peterborough Police responded to the area of Aylmer St and Wolfe St after a report of a stabbing. They located two individuals with stab wounds who were in a verbal argument with a person known to them that turned physical. The two victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspect was located in the area and taken into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Assault with a Weapon x2

• Possession of Weapons for Dangerous Purpose

• Fail to comply with Undertaking

The accused was held in custody and appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court on Saturday.

Two Peterborough Men Caught Speeding Arrested for Drug Possession Charges

Two Peterborough men are facing weapon and drug charges after a traffic stop stemmed from travelling at a high rate of speed on Thursday night.

At roughly 10:30 p.m., officers on duty noticed a car travelling at a high rate of speed in the Lansdowne Street area. They located the vehicle a short time later in the area of Townsend Street and Aylmer Street and initiated a traffic stop. While speaking with the driver, the officer noticed drug paraphernalia within the vehicle.

During a vehicle search, officers located a weapon, ammunition and various drugs.

A 39-year-old Peterborough man was charged with:

• Unauthorized Possession of Weapon

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Crack Cocaine

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Fentanyl

• Possession of over 30g dried cannabis

The accused is also currently on a Conditional Sentence Order, a lifetime Weapons Prohibition Order, and is bound by a Probation Order.

They were further charged with:

• Fail to Comply with Probation

• Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

The accused has been held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

A 32-year-old Peterborough man has also been charged with:

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance

They were released on an undertaking and scheduled to attend court on Dec. 16.
