Habitat for Humanity Ceremony This Friday To Mark Completion of Three New Homes For Peterborough Families

Peterborough's Habitat for Humanity chapter started here back in 2002 and since then, with the help of many volunteers and the community's help, this non-profit organization has given many families a secure and safe home to be proud of and to know they were part of building their very own home. Just recently, Habitat has completed three homes on Towerhill Road with the help of Fleming's Sustainable Building Program, the Peterborough Professional Firefighters Association and community volunteers.

This Friday (October 22nd), there will be a dedication and celebration ceremony at 1 p.m. at 288 Towerhill Road to honour the accomplishment and the completion of these homes. It's an opportunity to meet the families and people of the community that in some way contributed to this wonderful cause.

If you are interested in becoming involved with Habitat, click here for more info. —Julie Morris, PtboCanada contributor

"Rink of Ribbons" Petes Fundraiser for Canadian Cancer Society

As the Examiner reports, for a second straight year our Peterborough Petes and the Canadian Cancer Society have teamed up for a great cause. Last year, "Pink the Rink" raised more than $55,000; this year's event is called "Rink of Ribbons" (to include raising money for all types of cancer research), and takes place Saturday, Feb. 5, when the Petes host the Sudbury Wolves.

Former Pete (and NHL player) Doug Evans and Petes assistant coach Wayne Clark were named honourary chairmen of the event. See more from them in the video below.

Remember: It's Waste Reduction Week

It is Waste Reduction Week, with the idea being to encourage waste reduction within organizations and communities. There are resources online to distribute throughout your workplace or school.

On Saturday, bring scrap metal, batteries and electronic equipment to the City Hall Parking Lot (from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m) for safe disposal.

Meet the Two Dudes Behind the Excellent 'Have you seen...' Movie Rental Store

HaveYouSeen Paul Pfeiffer and Howard Gibbs didn't know quite what they were getting into when they came up with the idea to open a movie rental store. Their friends said the concept would be an "effort in futility," and yet 8 1/2 years later Have you Seen... remains the best place to find a rental flick in the Patch.
