From a Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Media Release today...

Robbery/Home Invasion/Weapons Arrest:

The victim, an 18-year-old male, was in his Charlotte Street apartment last night when he heard a knock at the door. He went to unlock it and was confronted by two males, one wearing a mask and the other had his face covered. The victim was sprayed in the face with bear spray, he fell to the ground and the two suspects entered the apartment and left a short time later. The victim reported that there was $190.00 stolen. The suspects fled and the police were called. Officers located the suspects walking across the No Frills parking lot on George Street heading towards the train bridge. When the officers confronted the males, they both gave false names and one of them fled on foot. The suspect who ran was apprehended after a short foot chase. Both males were arrested and found to be in possession of approximately 207 grams of marihuana with an estimated street value of $3,100.00, bear spray, a knife, mask and cell phones. The cash that the victim reported stolen was not in the accused’s possession. After further investigation, the victim revealed that the marihuana was stolen from his apartment and not the money. As a result Christopher Ernest Derrett age 30 of Gallery On The Lake Road in Buckhorn was charged with robbery with a weapon, break and enter, wearing a disguise while committing a criminal offence, assault with a weapon, obstructing a police officer, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a weapon and five counts of failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance. Man Arrested For Taking $40,000 From Elderly Victims

From a Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Media Release today...

Fraud/Criminal Harassment Arrest:

On the 11th of October, a Peterborough man was arrested for an alleged fraud scheme involving several elderly victims. Investigation revealed that between June of 2008 and July 2011, a male targeted several seniors and obtained over $40,000.00 from them. He  approached the victims, all Peterborough residents, at their homes and offered to do odd jobs. He befriended them and worked to gain their trust, visiting them often. He was deceitful and told them he needed money for medical treatments, to travel and visit elderly sick family members, for school books and to help out his disabled daughter. He was able to convince the victims, three females ages 93, 79, and 91 and a 91 year old male, to give him cash and cheques. As a result of the investigation, John Melville White age 34 of Milroy Drive has been charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.00, two counts of fraud under $5,000.00 and four counts of criminal harassment. He was released from custody and will appear in court on the 3rd of November. Police are asking any other victims that may have been a target of this fraudulent scam to contact the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service at 705-876-1122.

Financial fraud is the fastest growing form of elder abuse. Broadly defined, financial elder abuse is when someone illegally or improperly uses a vulnerable senior's money or other property. This type of crime often goes unreported as elderly victims are often too confused, fearful, or embarrassed. Protect yourself or loved ones from financial elder abuse by watching for the following warning signs:
    • An individual who suddenly forms a close relationship with the older person, getting easy access to his or her home, money, and other property.
    • Unusual or large withdrawals or transfers from bank accounts, or large credit card charges that the older person can't explain.
    • Changes in account beneficiaries or authorized signers.
    • A dramatic change in mood or disposition, or other evidence of substandard care.
    • Sudden social isolation.

Creepy Guy Arrested After Following Teenage Girls Around In His Truck

From a Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Media Release today...

Criminal Harassment Arrest:

On the 11th of October at approximately 7:00 pm, two females ages 17 and 18, were walking their dogs in the area of Park Street and Braidwood Avenue and were being followed by a black pick up truck driven by a male. The girls left the area in a vehicle and when they returned they noticed the vehicle was still in the area watching them. The vehicle description and licence plate was obtained and the police were called. A short time later police received a second complaint that the black pick up truck was following a 14-year-old girl who had been walking on Braidwood Avenue near Park Street. The vehicle drove up beside the girl and the male driver asked her if she wanted a ride. As a result of the police investigation it was determined that the male’s actions led the victims to fear for their safety. At 11:57 pm the suspect, Robert Duncan Dougall age 26 of Fradette Avenue was arrested at his residence and charged with criminal harassment. He was held in custody and will appear in court later this morning.

Closer Campaign Raises Amazing $3,403,212 To Expand Cancer Care At PRHC

The final tally for the Closer campaign was announced tonight at the donor and volunteer celebration at Market Hall. Community Campaign Team Chair Margie Lightbody said that a whopping $3,403,212 was raised to expand cancer care at PRHC.

Speaking to a capacity crowd of more than 200 guests, Lightbody thanked everyone who gave their time and money to the campaign.

"Last October, we asked the community to 'raise their hands if they'd been affected by cancer' by joining us in a community-driven campaign to raise $2.5 million to bring cancer care closer to home," said Lightbody. "Now, just one year later, I'm in awe of what we have achieved. Not only have we met our $2.5 million Closer campaign goal, we have surpassed it, raising $3,403,212 to help expand cancer care at PRHC and bring radiation treatment to our community for the first time."

"The community’s response has been outstanding," said Lightbody. "More than 9,725 gifts were received from individuals, estates and a wide variety of organizations within our community and beyond. We also had the support of several schools ranging from elementary through to college and university, service clubs, workplaces, and businesses. From galas, fashion shows, and Dancing with the Docs, to the Dragon Boat Festival, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, golf tournaments and the great Urban Adventure Challenge, people enthusiastically participated or volunteered their time to ensure each event was a success."

The $2.5 million campaign included $400,000 for lab equipment and $600,000 for surgical equipment to accommodate increasing volumes of cancer patients—and $1.5 million to install the radiation treatment facility. PRHC is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to put the installation of the single radiation facility out to tender and construction will commence when this process has been completed. The facility is then expected to be operational by next summer.
