Style File One: Look -> What's Your Style Peterborough?

Franny

Franny

Note: This marks the introduction of a new column called "What's Your Style Peterborough?" written by local fashionista Ash Street.

In The Spotlight: Franny
Ash's Style File Notes: I spotted her a couple of weeks ago at Hunter and George, and was very struck by her look. On that day, she was wearing a pencil skirt paired with this coat, beige hosiery, black ankle boots and bright red lips. • Her artistic expression really led me to think about the way people in this city express their personalities through the clothes that they wear. • This time of year is particularly hard to dress for, but I love that Franny is perfectly dressed for the weather. The staple green cardigan is from Sympathy for the Rebel, she says. • The bright colours peeking out under the wintery—and necessary—coat are a reminder that Spring is breaking through in little hints. Franny's fashion is playful and fun. —Ash Street

DBIA Featured Post: Apollo Grill

Downtown Peterborough has long been a haven of locally owned and operated restaurants.  In the downtown core, you will find something offered to please almost every palate. Coming back with a vengeance—and to everyone's delight!—are classic "burger joints."  They don't get any more classic than the Apollo Grill located at the corner of George Street North and Hunter Street (402 George St. N.).

Locally owned and operated by Dan Rennick and his wife Kerry, the Apollo Grill brings you an incredible burger experience within the warm confines of a 1940s diner located at one of the busiest intersections in Peterborough's downtown. This resurrection of the mouthwatering homestyle burger provides the perfect destination to everyone from young families, date nights, to evenings out with friends.

The new downtown Apollo Grill is actually the second location in our fair city, with the original located at 1840 Lansdowne Street West. The George and Hunter street location opened late last year, and was brought downtown due to the overwhelming success of the original location that opened July 2011 on Lansdowne. Dan and Kerry were actually approached by the building's landlords and asked if they would like to bring Apollo Grill downtown.

The Apollo Grill features fresh cut fries and a great selection of burgers made daily from ground steak. What is interesting is that instead of using basic frozen ground beef, Apollo Grill uses fresh steak that is ground in house each day. They also cut and blanche their own fries. To complete the experience, Apollo Grill offers hand-dipped shakes which are made from premium local Central Smith ice cream. Of course there are also onion rings, sweet potato fries, veggie burgers and delicious poutine offered at both locations. A few must tries include the Apollo burger, the Mushroom Swiss, and of course the famous Royal Burger, all offered as a single or double burger.

Dan and Kerry are extremely excited and proud of the opening of the Apollo Grill in Peterborough's downtown, and plan to continue expanding to other locations and cities.  Within only a few short months, the downtown Apollo Grill is already considered one of the best places to gather with friends, co-workers or family for a quality meal!

Dan and Kerry invite you to experience their newest location in downtown Peterborough and taste the difference local quality makes.

Here's Rob Ford At The Leafs Game Last Night, It Ain't Pretty

The Leafs lost last night, again, pretty much eliminating them from the playoffs. Fans weren't happy, and neither was Mayor Rob Ford. He was there and was downright belligerent—to the point ACC security had to ask him to control himself, maybe because the Leafs were losing or possibly because he was denied entry into the exclusive Directors' Lounge, the Star reports. Ford eventually disappeared, hailing a cab or something, as his budget chief who was with him couldn't find him. This clip was sent to Peterborough's PMZ of Ford at the game before he bolted early. Have a watch...

Help This Woman Find Her Engagement Ring & Wedding Band Lost In Peterborough

A Bridgenorth woman lost her sapphire and diamond engagement ring and wedding band in Peterborough and desperately wants it back. She's been tweeting about it, and here's the post she put on Kijiji about it...

"Large reward for the return of my diamond and sapphire engagement ring and wedding band. Taken from lower PCVS gym between 8pm Wednesday evening to Thursday at 7pm. Someone took the engagement and wedding band and left the larger wedding band behind. Please return these rings, I am sad and heartbroken. I don't want replacements, I want my rings. I will pay you to get them back, just please return them.

My engagement ring was one I had admired for many years. My husband saved and saved to get me the exact ring I wanted. He put the ring onto a beaded necklace my daughter gave to him and kept it hidden under his shirt. He asked my parents and my Aunt for permission the night before we left on a vacation. When we went through customs he had to lift the necklace and show the customs officers behind my back that he had a secret engagement ring on the necklace that was  setting the alarms off.

$_35-1.JPG

He proposed to me in Antigua and we married the following year. We have been through so much together and we custom designed the engraving on the bands as well. I know you must have a heart because you left the larger wedding band with engraving of my wedding date and nick name on them. Please do the right thing and return these rings. These are the rings my husband proposed to me with, that I wore on a necklace when I was sick in bed because my hands were too swollen to wear them. They are the rings my babies played with while I rocked them to sleep. The rings my girls would receive when I pass on.

After we were engaged the necklace my daughter made (a colourful beaded necklace) hung from our rearview mirror. Someone stole our truck, they stole everything inside of it, stripped all of the rims and anything worth any amount. They even stole the necklace. My computer with our engagement photos was also stolen. That ring was the last thing I have from our actual engagement.

PLEASE return them to me no questions asked, large reward given. I just want them back. Stealing them is not worth it, I have notified all of the pawn shops, auction sites and kijiji, the police as well. If you have any shred of decency and heart you will return these rings to me. A criminal record or chance of one is not worth it. PLEASE return them. I promise I will pay you a large reward. I just want them back as soon as possible.

I keep trying to imagine what you are doing with them. How desperate you must feel that you need to steal. I know how badly it hurts when you are suffering and hungry and have no money. I know what it's like to have an addiction and if this is you and you really need this money, I promise I will not hurt you or turn you in, I just want the rings back and I will give you whatever else you want in $$$ for it. Please understand how much this means to me. I cannot stop crying and I feel sick, I am losing my faith in humanity and wondering why people keep stealing from us and taking advantage. I would never hurt anyone.

Please note one of the photos is of the ring before the engraving was done on the outside. I wish I had better photos. I have notified every pawn shop in Ontario that I can find. I have also filed a police report. Take them to the police and turn them in, or contact me for a large cash reward. NO QUESTIONS ASKED."

Call 705-957-3566 if you find it.

Between The Sheets Play Opens At The Market Hall

"Between the Sheets dramatizes the challenges a woman faces in our modern world when she has to literally be a 'supermom' and work outside the home and also be all things to her husband and kids – and somehow find a way to balance those demands."

The play brings you to a classroom and the set itself bisects the class putting you front and centre (and at times very close to the tension). You will find yourself so invested in the play, you won't want it broken up into two acts. Peterborough's own Linda Kash and Megan Murphy played very believable roles that you can see transpiring in your own community, and will have you pondering about each of their viewpoints.

  • Written by Jordi Mand
  • Direction by Randy Read
  • Production design by Ian Burns
  • Lighting Design by Rob McInnis
  • Costume Design by Gwen Hope
  • Stage Management by Esther Vincent

Between the Sheets runs April 4th to 6th & April 10th to 12th at Market Hall

All performances at 8 pm except on April 6th (2 pm matinee only). Tickets are $28 regular admission; $25 seniors; $10 students and art workers.

Watch "The Goal"

The Peterborough Petes have totally won us over. They were down 3-0 down in their first round playoff series against Kingston. Then, against all odds, then won 3 straight to force a deciding Game 7 in Kingston last night (April 1st). It was a game for the ages: end to end action, lots of close chances at both ends, pure drama. It was 1-1 heading into OT. Andrew D'Agostini was brilliant in net—he stood on his head and then some—and then... "The Goal" by Nick Ritchie. And for only the 4th time in OHL history, a team had come from 3-0 down in a series to win it. Oshawa, you're next. But in the meantime, watch this over and over and over again...
