Someone Stole The Gnomes From The Magical Fairy Tree On Charlotte Street

The well known "Fairy Tree" on Charlotte near Albertus has always been decorated in a magical way. It's really neat stuff. But now someone has apparently stolen the gnomes that go with the tree. Bring that tree more magic, and bring them back!

A Peterborough Woman, Her Late Dad And The Beautiful Connection Blue Rodeo Has To Them

Congrats to Peterborough's Ashley Doherty, winner of our VIP Blue Rodeo contest, who will be attending their special concert August 8th at the Memorial Centre as part of Trent University's 50th anniversary celebrations.

When we informed her she won, she told us this in an email: "Wow, thank you so much! My Dad brought me up listening to Blue Rodeo.... I can still hear him singing along. He is no longer with us, so this is extra special for me :)"

We asked Ashley to elaborate in a subsequent email. And she did. Keep some Kleenex handy. OK, here we go...

"My Dad, Mark, meant a lot to me. I was definitely his girl! Always laughing, singing and joking around. He was SUCH a happy person despite the fatal disease—scleroderma—that attacked his lungs. He lived with it for the last 15 years of his life. You would have never known he was ill if it wasn't for the oxygen tank he had to rely on for the last few years of his life. Besides not looking 'sick', he always had a smile ear to ear. He loved his family and friends so much.

He also loved music! He always sang with a smile. He wasn't a musician.... But whenever he played a record, CD, or heard a good song on the radio, you could count on him belting out the lyrics! I can remember him singing Blue Rodeo songs way back. The first song I remembered him singing along to was "Try". And the album Five days In July was definitely a favourite. I can still hear him singing along to "5 Days In May" like it was yesterday. I think I can speak for my entire family when I say that when a Blue Rodeo song comes on... My Dad enters my mind. His smile. His laugh. His voice. His true love of life.

Unfortunately, we lost him Christmas 1999. It's been a long time, but it still feels like he was here yesterday. He lives on in his family. You can see my Dad in me and my brother Trevor, and now in my daughter Ellie. I can see my Dad in his mother, sister, brother, and 4 nephews. He will never be truly gone.

Instead of dwelling on the fact that he had this fatal disease, he LIVED. He was so happy, he loved life. He went to work, stayed fit by going to the gym, provided for his family, and made mine and my brother's childhood so much fun!"

So yeah, Ashley, enjoy your tickets. Somehow, you were meant to win these. This one's for you and your Dad...

Green Eyewear: excellent new location

Green Eyewear: excellent new location

Local business owners Shane and Amanda Palmer have recently moved their George Street store Green Eyewear Optical to the brand new building at the corner of Hunter St and Alymer St (234 Hunter St W), in downtown Peterborough.

It was very important to them to keep their business in the vibrant downtown and to continue supporting our community. They are conveniently located right next door to Dr. Diane Trevis and Associates, which allows them to provide full optical care from one location.

Convenient parking

Convenient parking

The new location has ample parking, which makes it very accessible for their customers. These owners/operators try to keep things as local as possible, such as sourcing beautiful, quality eyeglass frames by a designer who lives in Millbrook.

Making the conscious decision to promote local keeps their carbon footprint low and contributes to our local economy.

Beautiful new store

Green Eyewear Optical has been open for five successful years now. Shane and Amanda would like to thank Peterborough for embracing their business and choosing to buy local.

“We are very fortunate to have a loyal client base, we are very focused on customer service and I think people appreciate that,” they say.

Shane and Amanda invite you to stop in and see their NEW LOCATION. It is located at 234 Hunter St W (NW corner at Alymer).

Repair Cafe Peterborough is holding a  an event Monday, July 28th at the Silver Bean Cafe.

Repair Cafe is a cool, simple concept: Bring your broken items out (July 28th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to the Silver Bean at Millennium Park), and work with Repair Cafe Fixers to mend, darn, reattach, rewire, or diagnose what needs fixing!

Items can include clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, toys, jewelry—anything really. You could find repair specialists such as electricians, seamstresses, carpenters and mechanics there. You could even become a volunteer fixer yourself.

This free event is a chance to share knowledge, build skills and get help fixing those things that just don't work anymore, the idea being that lots of useful items get tossed in landfill that could actually be fixed and re-used.

Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists, they start making their repairs in the Repair Cafe. Everyone learns and fixes—together!

If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or you can lend a hand with another repair job.

Or just discuss and fix local and global issues!
