Here's A Pig Totally Hogging The Road In Peterborough

Peterborough Chamber CEO Stu Harrison spotted a pig crossing the road today (September 9th) on Braidwood Ave. near the Memorial Centre. Why did the pig cross the road? Well we're not sure where it was heading, but it seemed like it owned the street—if not the neighbourhood...

Why You Should Vote On October 27th Peterborough

Leading Mayoral candidates: Maryam Monsef & Incumbent Daryl Bennett

Leading Mayoral candidates: Maryam Monsef & Incumbent Daryl Bennett

Peterborough is one of the greatest cities anywhereone of Canada's most secretly awesome cities. But we know that. You know that. We trumpet that all the time here: the amazing people (and their animals), organizations, institutions, non-profits, charities and businesses that make this community what it is. In many respects, it's a community of collaboration. Build a city together, not in silos.

It's stunningly beautiful, this gateway to the Kawarthas—and pretty much anyone who visits here or lives here raves about it. It has all the amenities of a big city, and then some. And the best zoo anywhere.

So yes, there is lots of greatness here—so get ready for "great" (repeat) in this paragraph. We have great businesses. We have a great emerging tech (and green tech) sector. We have great organizations like Peterborough Economic Development working to bring business here (and create jobs)—"Let's do Business” is one of their mottos—and the Peterborough Chamber (one of the best Chambers anywhere) working to help grow existing businesses (like ours), make them sustainable and advocate on their behalf. We have great post-secondary institutions in Trent University and Fleming College. We have great (and diverse) restaurants, pubs, cafés and retail stores. We have a great music, arts and cultural scene. We are a great sports town, and the Petes and Lakers are known far and wide. And most important, we have great people all around us. Peterborough is a city of great people.

But everyone knows there is room for improvement in this city; there always is. This is a particularly crucial phase, this next four years. There are many questions—and no easy answers—in the city around jobs, sustainable economy, economic development, green spaces, urban sprawl, development, Parkway (or no Parkway), taxes, the downtown, crime, addiction, social services, keeping young people here, etc.

Which is why October 27th is so damn important. It's the Mayor (and city council) you elect who sets the tone for this city. They are representatives/ambassadors for you—the constituent—and for the city on a local, and sometimes, national and world stage. They are a vital, essential part in where we are now, and where we're going to move forward as a city in healthy ways.

So be engaged. Get informed. Go to the debates. Go to the candidates' websites and social media pages. Learn their platforms and policies. Ask questions. Tweet, email and call your candidates. Stop them on the street. Talk to your colleagues, friends and family. What are they saying?

The city is buzzing about this election because of the amazing candidates running for city council, school board trustee and Mayor. They all care about city building, which is why they're running. There is no excuse for voter apathy/angst/cynicism this time out.

Now it's up to you to get out there and vote. Find out everything you need to know about voting by going to Peterborough.ca/vote.

Voting is your democratic right and one so many people in other countries don't have, so exercise it. Cast your ballot October 27th.

PTBOCanada Featured Post: A Profile On Bill Fox From Fox Law Firm

Bill Fox

Bill Fox

If you know anything about the barrister scene in Peterborough, one of the few constants that stand out in town is the name Bill Fox. The Fox Law firm has been a part of our community for more than 40 years now and has gone through many changes, but always with Bill at the forefront.

Born in Toronto before moving to Cornwall, Ont., where he grew up, Bill is the oldest in a family of four children. Fluent in French, Bill grew up an avid golfer, playing at one time for the Quebec provincial team. His father owned a hotel in the French district of Cornwall which further cemented his French connection.

Upon graduating from high school where he was described in the yearbook as “Perry Mason with a golf club," Bill went on to the prestigious St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto where, in his first year, he met Anne, his wife to be! With Anne by his side, working at Bell, and later as a high school teacher, Bill then attended Osgoode Hall law school where they married after his first year there. When Bill graduated with his law degree, he immediately moved to Peterborough, where he has remained ever since.

Working for various firms as an associate including with Howell and Fleming, partnering with John McCarney, and later Jim Potts, Bill set out on his own in 1984 as a sole practitioner and Fox Law has been a part of our community ever since. Working with Bill since 1978 is his secretary Colleen Worboy, and joining them in 1988 was Patty Parks. They still work together as a team to this day!

2014 has been a major year for Bill at Fox Law. With his ever growing portfolio and responsibilities around town, he has taken on Ross Pryde and Nicole Truman—watch for a profile on her next in this series—as associate lawyers. Both Ross and Nicole have business administration undergraduate degrees and both worked in business before going to law school. In May of this year, the firm assumed the law practice of retiring lawyer, John Crook, and in October they are moving their office from its current fourth floor residence in the J. J. Turner building (140 King Street) in downtown Peterborough to the expanded premises just one floor down on the third floor, in the same building!

THE MAIN AREAS OF LAW PRACTICED BY THE MEMBERS OF FOX LAW ARE...

- Business law (corporate and commercial)
- Real estate
- Powers of attorney
- Wills
- Estate Administration

Bill prides himself on being very active in the community outside of his law practice. Other than his lifelong golf hobby, and love of hockey and bridge, he has been the past director of the Peterborough Rotary Club, the YMCA, Peterborough Golf and Country Club, as well as the past president of the Peterborough Law Association.

Peterborough Girl Saved By Heart Transplant Launches Organ Drive To Spread Awareness

Twelve-year-old Peterborough girl Sarah Edge loves riding horses—and has won quite a few ribbons!

She is a happy, healthy girl.

But when she was just 6 weeks old, she went into heart failure. "I had to have a heart transplant when I was 18 months old, after living at the Hospital for Sick Children for 3 1/2 months," she says. "I am doing really well now. I have to take good care of this precious heart, because I am so very lucky to have it."

When Sarah realized that many perfectly healthy organs don't get used, she was shocked. So now she's started an organ donation drive to raise awareness. "Nobody knows when somebody we love might need an organ transplant," she says. "I asked my mom what it was like to be hoping somebody else's child died so that I could live, but she explained that it's not like that at all. Bad things happen all of the time—she just hoped and prayed that no organ would be wasted, and if one was available, they would decide to help me live."

Sarah asks you to take the time to register here. Spread the word on your social media channels.
