9 Things You Should Know About Smoke Alarms In Your Home

It's Fire Prevention Week, and this year's campaign is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!” Here are 9 things you should know...

1. Working smoke alarms save lives
2. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly. Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button
3. Working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half
4. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke alarms.
5. In a fire, seconds count. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out," says Peterborough Fire Chief Chris Snetsinger.
6. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home—including the basement
7. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do.
8. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly.
9. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

Meet A Domesticated Blue Jay Named Hank That Loves Doritos Roulette Flavour

You probably remember the story of Hank the young fledgling that was rescued at 2 weeks old by the Williams family in Peterborough after almost getting killed by a cat. Well Hank has now become domesticated after attempts to release him into the wild—he loves his adopted family—and part of his diet as the Williams family pet includes Doritos Roulette flavour, where a few of the chips in each bag are insanely hot. If Hank is in the backyard playing with his wild Blue Jay buddy, one of the tricks to entice him to come home when it's meal time is with Roulette Doritos. See more pictures and tweets below regarding Hank "Doritos Roulette" Williams....

Jay, Megan & Linda

Three Peterborough radio personalities—Megan Murphy, Linda Kash and Jay Sharp—are pitching CBC's national ComedyCoup Competition, which gives fans the power to help their fave comedy show concept turn into a half-hour special for CBC prime time. The trio's show is called Dead Air, and they describe it as WKRP in Cincinnati meets The Office. It's about a small town radio station full of big city egos. The star character is "Mike Street", a middle aged morning show host at “The Lizard 90.3”. Mike had big dreams of making it to a major radio market but grew to enjoy the attention of being “The Morning Mayor” in his hometown. Dead Air follows the perks and pitfalls of being a small town celebrity, and all the social discomforts it brings. Watch their pitch video here for their sitcom pilot, and follow them and rate them on the social media widgets at their CBC page, share their page with others, and sign up to be a CBC ComedyCoup fan. They need all the shares they can get to help advance to the next stage of voting!

You can follow Dead Air on Twitter here or "Like" them on Facebook.
