An Epic Rainbow Igloo Has Been Constructed In Apsley

Apsley School Council has coordinated the building of a Rainbow Igloo for the Apsley Winter Carnival on February 21st. Apsley School Council Chair Carolyn Amyotte and fellow parents Ann Johnston, Jen Temple and Jenny Atmore are pledging to spend a night in the igloo if they can raise at least $1,000 towards the purchase of leveled literacy program resources to help their students.

***They believe that being a small school with a limited budget in a small, rural community shouldn't prevent their children from accessing the same programs and resources that other schools with bigger budgets can, and are raising awareness and funds by doing this epic igloo.

The Rainbow Igloo Project-Facts and Stats

• Almost 1200 2L cartons collected
• More than 2500L of water used
• Nearly 2 litres of food colouring used
• Construction started Jan 28th
• Finished and shoveled out Feb 14th
• 12 ft diameter at the base
• 6 ft 5” high at the center
• Hundreds of volunteer hours
• Almost a dump truck load of snow used for the mould
• Lighting ceremony at 6 pm, Saturday, February 21st, at the Apsley Lion's Winter Carnival held at the NKCC in Apsley

See more of how the igloo came together at the @eelslake Twitter handle. Donate here to help the school out.

Fifty Shades Of Grey Protest At Galaxy Cinemas Theatre In Peterborough

There have been protests worldwide at theatres—ranging from London, England to Los Angeles—from protestors who say Fifty Shades of Grey glorifies sexual abuse and domestic violence towards women. Part of a headline for a Forbes.com film review said it's "Abusive Gender Roles Disguised As Faux-Feminism". Protests included one by the Trent Feminist Society, who brought placards outside of Galaxy Cinemas Theatre in Peterborough Friday night (February 13th) to shed a different perspective on the book/movie in regards to the controlling way Anastasia Steele was treated by Christian Grey according to this Facebook comment on Magic's 96.7 Facebook page. The commenter noted they were not trying to prevent people from watching the film but rather to encourage a different point of view, and spread awareness and give resources to those in need. They also handed out pamphlets containing info on the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre in order to prevent, support, heal and educate.

**You can read The New Yorker's review of the movie here, and read a frank conversation on Buzzfeed about the sexual dynamics in the movie here.

GoFundMe Page Set Up For Young Boy Fighting For His Life #PrayForParker

Parker Fulford is a very young boy from Peterborough who has overcome many struggles since being born premature, at only 23 weeks, in February 2012. The latest is very severe, as he has been airlifted from PRHC to Toronto Sick Kids with an extreme case of pneumonia. Parker, who has cerebral palsy, is in critical condition in hospital.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by James Todd to help the parents Jennifer and Mike Fulford with the costs they will incur due to travel to Toronto, losing income, food costs, etc., that add to an already stressful situation.

"I set up the GoFundMe page to do my part in helping them relieve some stress, because I know I'd hope for someone to do the same," James Todd, a father himself, tells us.

All funds collected will go to help the family cover costs. Click here to give, and use the hashtag #PrayForParker on Twitter and Facebook.
