Peterborough & The Kawarthas Classics Road Cycling Routes Launched

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism, Shimano Canada, the County of Peterborough and the City of Peterborough have partnered to create the area’s first official road cycling routes.

The Peterborough & the Kawarthas Classics are a series of three double-loop road cycling routes which were officially launched Wednesday (May 13th) at McCracken’s Landing, just outside of Peterborough.

Through extensive collaboration with avid local road cyclists, nearly 300 kilometres of scenic rural roads encompassing the three most dynamic and popular routes throughout Peterborough County now include approximately 160 way-finding signs. These routes take riders off of the beaten path—encouraging visitation to businesses throughout the region.

All routes start and end in downtown Peterborough at Millennium Park tying into a number of trail systems in the City of Peterborough.

The three routes are often enjoyed by many of the area’s local cyclists, but have yet to be discovered by visitors to the area. They have been divided into long and short loops and were named by their distinct characteristics and the length:
Route 1 – Lakes, Rivers & Cafes 60 & Route 1A – Lakes, Rivers & Cafes 45
Route 2 – The Cottage Country 100 & Route 2A – The Cottage Country 80
Route 3 – Hills, Views & Pastries 80 & Route 3A – Hills, Views & Pastries 65

In addition to the physical signage, the routes have been digitally mapped using MapMyRide and Strava—both popular online applications based on the use of GPS capable mobile devices used by cyclists to plan and capture routes and performance, which can then be shared online.

Route maps, highlights, places to stay and eat, and other cycling related information is available here.

Peterborough's Sebastian Deery IMGUR Posts Go Viral About Being D-List Actor

image via @sebastianjdeery

A little known actor from Peterborough is now well known around the world.

Sebastian Deery, 27, gained overnight internet fame after amassing more than a million views from posts on the popular visual storytelling website Imgur.com. His posts were a self-deprecating series about what it's like to be an "unknown" in the acting world.

His original anonymous post, entitled “Actor Problems”, gained hundreds of thousands of views, as did a subsequent post.

The posts poked fun at the unreasonable demands made of actors, often at short notice (see samples below).

Sebastian then posted a reveal of his name due to popular demand—he says he had no particular reason for being anonymous in the first place—and that post has received nearly 500,000 views.

Sebastian has tweeted about the overwhelming attention he's now getting from around the world, which has ranged from marriage proposals to industry advice...

You can find out more about Sebastian Deery on IMDB.

And Sebastian, well played. Very well played.

Peterborough City Council Selects New Chief Administrative Officer

Peterborough City Council has announced that it has appointed Allan Seabrooke as the new chief administrative officer of the Corporation of the City of Peterborough effective June 8, 2015.

“Mr. Seabrooke has an excellent track record of leadership and innovation, in both the public and private sector,” Mayor Bennett said in a media release. “His existing, positive relationships within the Corporation of the City of Peterborough, with organizations throughout our community and with the County of Peterborough will help ensure a seamless transition.”

Mr. Seabrooke brings more than 25 years of experience in executive positions in municipal and provincial government as well as a private-sector business background. From 2011-2013, Mr. Seabrooke served as chief administrative officer of the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority, an organization that delivers programs and ensures compliance with legislation and regulation for a watershed region encompassing 1,951 square kilometres across eight municipalities in the Peterborough region.

Week In The Life Of A Woman Catcalled On Peterborough Streets

A Peterborough woman who asked to remain anonymous allowed us to share her story about a week in the life of being catcalled while walking city streets. This isn't a Peterborough thing but a universal thing—and it's just plain wrong that it happens all the time. Here it is...

"Many people have commented on the large headphones I wear on the regular. I normally laugh and say 'Well, I walk a lot and I need to have good music as I do that and bonus, it acts as earmuffs during the winter time.'

What I don't usually tell people is that it also acts as a way for me to block the number of things yelled/said to me usually by men in cars, as I walk from one place to another.

This past week I left my headphones at home. This is a recap of what was said to me.

As I was walking to a café downtown today, I decided to take the scenic way by the water. As I was walking on the path by the back of No Frills, an older man in a white minivan slowed down, honked his horn at me and asked me if I wanted to 'jump in and have some fun'. I ignored him and kept walking.

Earlier this week, I was walking to work and man in a red sedan turned off George street onto Wescott street and yelled 'nice tits' and sped away in his car.

Last week Friday, a man, on the corner of George and Sherbrooke street told me to 'smile'. When I did not 'smile', he physically moved in front me of and said, 'Come on, why don't you smile?' I continued to 'not smile' and as I walked past him, he called me 'a bitch'.

This is just a snapshot of the past seven days. This happens to me on the regular.

I'm not sharing this to ask people to sympathize with me, but rather to show the realities of what happens to me as a woman.

If this is happening to me, guaranteed it happening to other women you know."

So, what are we going to do to stop this?
