Maryam Monsef Becomes First Female MP In History Of Peterborough

For the first time ever, Peterborough has elected a woman to serve in Ottawa, as Liberal Maryam Monsef defeated Conservative candidate Michael Skinner and NDP candidate Dave Nickle.

"Today isn't the end, it's actually the beginning. The beginning of a lot of hard work to meet the commitments I made," she said in her victory speech to constituents at Showplace Peteborough.

Monsef had 29,091 (43.1%) of the vote in the decisive win, on a night when the Liberals formed a majority government under new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The 30-year-old PCVS and Trent University grad is also the youngest person ever elected from this riding.

Monsef tweeted out her thanks shortly after her win....

Learn more about Monsef's backstory in this feature article—"From Afghanistan To Iran To Peterborough: One Woman's Amazing Story Of How A City (& A School) Saved Her Life"—we posted in 2012.

Help The Casey Family Near Keene Recover After A Devastating Barn Fire

A huge fire tore through a large barn just west of Keene Sunday afternoon (October 18th), destroying the barn and all contents inside it. The barn is owned by the Casey family and was the home to three beautiful horses—Dallas, Texas and Nikki, who all survived thankfully.

Family friend Kayla Spittal tells PTBOCanada that Danielle Casey is the owner of these horses, and that her father James owns the farm on County Rd 2.

"With this tragedy comes very sad emotions," Kayla tells PTBOCanada. "Not only is it a family farm but Danielle and her deceased mother Cindy used to care for the animals. It was their mother-daughter time—cherished time together. When her mother passed, Danielle and her father James became the primary care givers for Dallas, Texas and Nikki."

Kayla is asking the community to pull together to help this family out.

"We are looking for donations or even just a loan of the items needed to help care for these animals," she tells PTBOCanada. "A few things that are needed to help are all types of brushes, lead chains, halters, saddles, outside blankets for under the saddles, salt blocks, hay, straw, grains, apples, mints, carrots, crunch—even down to some basic medications such as sprays for wounds to help with infections."

"Everything that these horses ever needed was inside that barn, as well as items that can never be replaced as they hold so much sentimental value," Kayla adds.

The family resides at 3043 County Rd 2 Keene—donations may be dropped off there. For more info on how to help, contact Kayla here.

Peterborough Teen Criss Tuck Has Had Enough Of People Using R-Word Around His Autistic Brother

Eighteen-year-old Criss Tuck has heard people use the "retarded" word one too many times around his older brother Jeffrey, 20, who has autism.

"Not using the 'R-Word' is something that our family feels very strongly about, and our son Criss is trying to make more people aware of the negative effects on people," says Cathie Tuck, their mother—who along with husband Dave are founders of the Peterborough Huskies special needs hockey team.

So Criss has just started a "Spread The Word To End The Word" Facebook page to raise awareness about the use of the R-word.

"The reason I am doing this campaign is because of the special needs community. I have been there when people use the word on my autistic brother—and I have also been called this," Criss tells PTBOCanada.

"I am also doing this for everyone who has a disability and/or challenge since we also have a right not to be called names and have people use the definition of our disability or challenge as a negative form of as what I see as bullying."

"People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not bad," says the Facebook campaign post. "Their condition is not bad. The prejudice and discrimination to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is BAD…and WRONG! Please stop using the word ‘retard’. It hurts individuals and families of those with disabilities."

Show your support for Criss's cause by "Liking" the Facebook page.

This summer two young boys (Nathan and Andrew) came to the Riverview Park and Zoo and donated their allowance to the zoo—along with this nice note and picture below.

And there is more. Zoo Manager and Curator Jim Moloney tells PTBOCanada: "Just last week, Nathan had a birthday party and instead of getting presents, he raised money to adopt one of our animals (a Brazilian Agouti). These are some pretty special boys!" Indeed.
