Ennismore Woman Recounts Terrifying Lightning Strike On Camp Site
/Tonya Kraan had a scary experience while camping at Silent Lake Provincial Park Friday night with family during the lightening storm that many in the Kawarthas experienced.
Tonya was in a tent when the camp site beside her took a direct hit.
She posted this photo below to Facebook showing where it hit: the light strip on the trunk is where the bark peeled off the tree after the strike and chunks hit the ground. "The tree is 1 foot from the trailer in the site beside us," Kraan says. "They had a fireball in their trailer but the fire didn't ignite."

In a prior Facebook post, she describes the damage done to trailers: "We were in tents. Split a tree and fireball went through their trailer. Shot through our site to the comfort station and knocked out the electrical on their water system. Then it shot over to a trailer on the other side of the station and blew their lights and electrical system. All vehicles in its path fried their electronics. Lots of tow trucks en route. Everyone is safe. No injuries. None of us slept a wink..... cant wait to get home and crawl into bed......"
Tonya tells PTBOCanada her tent was about 50 feet north of this tree pictured. They were on the site directly beside theirs...

"The flash was the scariest thing I've ever seen," Kraan adds. "I thought for sure it hit a foot from our tent. My arms were tingling for a minute or two. I was lying on the ground in my sleeping bag. Apparently lying down is the worst position when lightning strikes!!!"
Kraan says it's the worst and last camping trip she'll ever take. "I will never watch a lightning storm the same way again," she tells PTBOCanada.com. "When the strike happened, it felt like a direct hit. The heat and the shock felt like nothing I can really describe. It was like a million car lights coming on at the exact same time—the brightest light I have ever seen. I was lying down in my sleeping bag in our tent and my arms felt like pins and needles for about 15 minutes. I won't ever feel safe camping in a tent again, anywhere."

Lansdowne Place Station: LP Introduces Train Rides For Kids This Summer
/Lansdowne Place has just launched a train at the mall for this summer, and it's already been a hit with kids and their parents.
TRAIN ENGINEER RICK: Photo by Michelle Cameron
“This summer you can call us Lansdowne Place Station!” LP Marketing Director Emily Dart tells PTBOCanada. “We’re always looking for new activities families can enjoy together so when we had the opportunity to bring a trackless train inside the Shopping Centre, we jumped at the idea!"
The train, run by Train Engineer Rick, will operate during the months of July and August and alternate between the lower level and upper level of the Centre each day. Weather permitting, it might even go outside some days!

The train costs $3 a person and children under one are free. All ages are invited to join in so the mall hopes to see everyone try it out over the Summer months.

Humane Society Looking For Forever Homes For More Animals Transferred From Big Trout First Nation
/The Peterborough Humane Society has partnered again—you may recall our post from last October—with the Provincial Animal Transfer Team and a team of amazing volunteers to find new homes for 18 dogs and cats that have recently travelled down from Big Trout Lake First Nation.
As part of their community animal management program, the Elders and Band Council from Big Trout Lake First Nation invited the Ontario SPCA, Canadian Animal Assistance Team, Beat the Heat Kenora, Petsmart Charities, North Star Air Lts. and the Peterborough Humane Society to their community to provide a spay/neuter clinic to all of their resident pets and to then transfer south some of their community dogs and cats looking for new homes.

The Peterborough Humane Society was pleased to join in on this initiative by opening its doors to the 18 animals needing new homes. Peterborough’s own Jeff Day of Community Futures of Peterborough and his wife, Susie, joined the group up North to assist with the Spay/Neuter clinic.
“The community members of Big Trout Lake were most welcoming," says Jeff Day. "The opportunity to be a part of this collaborative effort was priceless. We would both relive this experience again and are excited for these animals to find their new forever homes.”

The Peterborough Humane Society says the pets that made their way down here will be ready for adoption as of Wednesday, July 5th, at 10 a.m.
Drop by the Humane Society between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. this week to adopt one. Pictures of the animals will be posted on the Humane Society website on Wednesday.

Thousands Of Post-It Notes, An Innovative Team & Hashtag Combine For Great Birthday Prank
/The Innovation Cluster's Operations and Human Resources Manager Alyssa Stewart had quite the birthday surprise on Tuesday (July 4th) when she came into work in the VentureNorth building in downtown Peterborough.
Her colleagues had spent 2.5 hours and used thousands of Post-it notes to "makeover" her cubicle and wish her a Happy Birthday.
"Alyssa started the hashtag #cubeprankwars a couple weeks ago when she plastic wrapped a coworkers desk and filled my office with balloons for my birthday," her colleague Rosalea Terry tells PTBOCanada.
Alyssa's earlier pranks...
"She always brightens our day so we figured we would brighten her day by post-it note bombing her office," Terry tells PTBOCanada. "We take innovation seriously but we also know how to have some serious fun."
And yes, they definitely rocked it with this latest cube prank war...
Alyssa looks happy in this photo below but you can tell she's already plotting her next move in the Cube Prank Wars...
