Peterborough Downtown Farmers' Market Opening Day Is May 2nd
/On May 2nd, the Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market will open for the 2018 season. This year, they will be shutting down the street between Louis St and George St., and transforming Charlotte into a pedestrian friendly, bustling Farmers’ Market every Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
This year marks the 21st year of bringing fresh locally grown seasonal produce and products to Downtown Peterborough. As a producers-only market, shoppers can be sure they are buying direct from the farmers, growers, bakers and Chefs themselves, and learn about diverse local produce as it comes into season.
Each Wednesday, market-goers will find a festive and lively market full of their favourite vendors selling seasonal produce, meats, cheese, fresh flowers, baked goods, art, plants to grow, coffee and lunches to go.
Along with monthly special events showcasing seasonal bounty, guest Chefs will provide samples, on-site cooking demonstrations, and innovative ideas on using market products throughout market season. The Downtown Farmers' Market season runs until October 31st.

Residents Asked To Temporarily Reduce Water Consumption
/The ongoing rainfall and snowmelt is causing a significantly increased volume of water to enter the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewage Pumping Stations, the City of Peterborough says in a media release.
As a result of the current conditions, the Wastewater Treatment plant is in secondary by-pass mode, which means that effluent leaving the plant has received the initial cleaning treatment but has not received the final polishing treatment. In addition, the Park Street Pumping Station is in by-pass mode, which means that some raw sewage is entering the Otonabee River.
As such, property owners downstream of Peterborough who use private systems to draw water from the river are advised to take precautions and boil water. City of Peterborough residents are not required to boil water, as the municipal drinking water system is not impacted.

The City of Peterborough is asking residents to reduce water consumption to help alleviate the volume of water flowing through the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewage Pumping Stations.
Residents can reduce their water consumption by taking short showers instead of baths, limiting or delaying loads of laundry, limiting or delaying dishwasher use, and turning off taps while brushing teeth and doing dishes.
In addition, area residents are reminded of the dangerous conditions posed by the wet ground and fast flowing water, and are advised to stay well back of the shorelines of area lakes, rivers and streams. Similarly, residents are asked to remain away from dam structures and piers.

15 Rescue Dogs Saved From A South Korean Meat Farm Have Arrived At Peterborough Humane Society
/UPDATED (April 14th): The 15 dogs rescued from the Korean Meat Farms through the great work of Humane Society International have arrived at Peterborough Humane Society and are currently being vetted by a team of highly trained volunteers led by Veterinarian Dr. Bruce Robertson.

Before being put up for adoption, the dogs will be settling into the shelter over the weekend so that they can properly be assessed and full medical assessments can be completed to ensure that they are ready for placement in their new forever home.
No dogs will be available for adoption this weekend, and PHS will be making an announcement when they are. An adoption application will be required for each interested family, ensuring that people who are considering an adoption of these lovely animals are aware of the implications of their breed and the special needs they will have due to their living status up until a month or so ago.

“This is a small example of the great work that our Peterborough team can do, especially once we are in our new facility and will have increased potential to provide the best in animal welfare both locally and globally,” says Shawn Morey, Executive Director of the Peterborough Humane Society.

ORIGINAL POST (April 13th)
Peterborough Humane Society sent a dedicated team of staff and volunteers and three trucks to Montreal on Friday (April 13th) to pick up 15 dogs rescued from a Korean Meat Farm that were brought to Canada through Humane Society International.

Humane Society International have worked in South Korea for the past three years and have permanently closed down 10 dog meat farms, transporting more than 1,200 dogs to safety in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

“Weeks ago, these dogs lived a life of severe deprivation, crammed in barren wire cages and chained to stakes in the ground on a South Korean dog meat farm," says Rebecca Aldworth, executive director for Humane Society International/Canada.
"They had no protection from the cold and were denied even the most basic of their needs, such as proper food, veterinary care and socialization. But thanks in large part to the generosity of the Eric S. Margolis Family Foundation, HSI was able to rescue these deserving dogs and bring them to safety here in Canada. We are forever grateful to the Peterborough Humane Society, and all of our incredible placement partners, for working to find forever homes for these wonderful dogs.”

Eighty dogs from Korea were flown into Montreal, and 15 of them will be heading to Peterborough later on Friday. They will eventually be ready to find their forever homes once they have been given a full bill of health and been spayed or neutered.

“We are extremely excited to be establishing this relationship with the team at HSI in an effort to find these beautiful dogs deserving homes in our community," says Shawn Morey, Executive Director of the Peterborough Humane Society.
"These wonderful dogs are all between eight months and a year old and did not have a favourable future ahead of them. With the support of many staff and volunteers willing to help, we are making a very positive difference in animal welfare."

Peterborough's Mike Swift, Canadian and Olympian Hockey star from the Korean Hockey team, will be on hand to greet the dogs when they arrive in Peterborough: “Being a dog lover, and having been in Korea for the past seven years, it seemed like a great fit to support yet another great endeavour by the PHS team and its volunteers," he says.

PRHC Opens Barrier-Free Downtown Clinic For Patients With Opioid And Alcohol Addictions
/Peterborough Regional Heath Centre (PRHC) has opened the area’s first Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) clinic, which provides expedited, barrier-free treatment for patients who are addicted to alcohol or opioids.
The downtown clinic (159 King St., Suite 302) is staffed by PRHC physicians and registered nurses (RNs). No booked appointment or physician referral is necessary, although referrals from doctors, nurses, social workers, addiction counselors and community providers are welcome.
“Our Rapid Access Addiction Medicine clinic provides immediate access to lifesaving treatment by offering same-day counselling and addiction medication, and prescription therapies,” says Dr. Jim McGorman, an Emergency Department physician with PRHC who is now also treating patients at the new clinic.
“This care model has been shown to help save lives by engaging patients with both short- and long-term therapies as soon as they are ready to pursue those treatments," Dr. McGorman adds.
The Rapid Access Addiction Medicine model is designed to initiate therapy for opioid or alcohol addiction and then triage clients to the most appropriate ongoing care provider. It is not intended to replace or duplicate the care provided by a family physician or a treatment clinic.
The RAAM clinic has been operating in its downtown location at 159 King St. Suite 302 (co-located with PARN) since March 5th. It is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
