Formerly known as the Peterborough Greenwing Fishing Derby, this year’s event will feature several new elements.
“We have listened to angler feedback from past years, and added two extra days of fishing, early bird registration prizes, goody bags for participants, and sponsored tagged fish with cash prizes for anglers of all ages to win,” said David Ryrie, OFAH Youth Education Manager.
The youth derby begins on April 30, for children 15 and under. It includes 500 tagged Trout for instant prizes, and a chance to win one of four grand prizes. The big fish prize is $1000 cash and will go to whoever catches Walter, a rainbow trout estimated to weigh between 8 and 10 pounds.
The all ages derby runs May 1-8 and for the first time ever will include tagged fish with cash prizes sponsored by local businesses.
“We still have fish in need of a local sponsor that will both challenge anglers and offset the cost of the stocked Trout for the youth derby,” said Ryrie.
Registration is required for all participants.$15 for one child, $10 for siblings, and $25 for adults.
Purchase tickets online at ofah.org/underthelock or in person at Peterborough Canadian Tire locations.

According to PPH residents who are immunocompromised due to a health condition or medication side effect are at an increased risk for moderate to severe symptoms due to COVID-19 infection.
“The COVID-19 vaccine is still the best defence against moderate to severe symptoms due a COVID-19 infection,” said Dr. Thomas Piggott, Medical Officer of Health for Peterborough Public Health. “Some residents who are immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive medication are eligible to receive four doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Residents who are immunocompromised due to health condition or medication may experience a reduced immune response to the COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, an additional dose is recommended to enhance the immune response and provide better protection against COVID-19.”
Residents who are eligible for a fourth dose can bring their referral form to receive a fourth dose at any Peterborough Public Health COVID-19 vaccine clinic.
Residents who are on a medication that makes them eligible for a fourth dose are also able to bring their prescription or medication to the vaccine clinic to confirm eligibility.
More information about COVID-19 vaccine availability can be found on the Peterborough Public Health vaccine webpage.

The show has existed for eight years in Bowmanville, but quickly outgrew the venue there and is coming to Peterborough to expand.
Initially they were set for 2020 but the COVID pandemic put an end to it before it could start.
“This has been two years in the making now,” said Kyle Carruthers, show organizer. “This will be bigger and better than anything we’ve ever done in Bowmanville. We’ve got more space, more experience and such high quality vendors.”
Carruthers, who works in the outdoor industry, says Peterborough is the perfect town to host this event in, as the city is surrounded by beautiful lakes and rivers prime for anglers.
Visitors to the show can expect to see used fishing tackle and gear being sold by vendors, big vendors like Shimano, and local companies like Musky maniacs, Lucky Strike Bait Works and Pro Tackle PTBO.
Admission is $10 (cash only) at the door and will get you entered into a draw to win a Garmin Fish Finder. Visitors are invited to bring a donation to the food bank, which will get them a second entry to the draw.
Children under 12 will get in for free, as well as a free bait or lure courtesy of Lucky Strike and Berkley.
There will also be an opportunity to enter a raffle in support of breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment at PRHC with the Peterborough Dragon Boat festival.
“It will have a small town feel to it, we’re trying to support the community,” said Carruthers. “Fisherman and anglers respect the conservation side of the waters while giving back when we can.”
