Let's Dance As Bowie Tribute Hits Del Crary Park Stage On Saturday

The Bowie Lives featuring Peterborough’s own Michael Bell will hit the stage at Del Crary Park on Saturday.

In collaboration with musical director Michael Beauclerc, Bell debuted The Bowie Lives in 2017 and has since fronted the tribute to the late singer, songwriter and actor, performing at venues across Ontario and beyond. In bringing Bowie back to life, Bell et al perform a long list of hit songs that dominated the charts over five decades – Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, Fame, Golden Years, Let’s Dance, Modern Love and many more.

The Bowie Lives is actually Bell’s second homage to the singer. In the late ‘80s, he toured ChangesAllBowie but eventually turned his attention full-‐time to The Wire MEGAzine, the Peterborough-‐based tabloid that he founded, and raising his family. Following Bowie’s death in 2016, Bell’s passion for the singer’s music and legacy picked up right where it left off, fueled by heightened music industry and public interest.

This event is completely free, with first come first served seating. It is suggested that concert goers bring a lawn chair or chairs will be available to rent at the venue.

If a storm occurs during a concert, a cancellation announcement will be made from the stage. Peterborough Musicfest will not issue a cancellation call until 7:45 p.m. fifteen minutes before the scheduled start of 8 p.m. Rescheduling of cancelled concerts is not guaranteed.

City Of Peterborough Recognizing Emancipation Day On August 1

Emancipation Day, which brings awareness to the history of the enslavement of Black and Indigenous Peoples on these lands, and is an opportunity to recognize the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada and those who fought enslavement, is recognized in Canada on August 1.

August 1 marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect in Britain and its settler-colonial nation states around the world, including the colonies that would become Canada.

"Ending anti-black racism and discrimination is not a one-time project. It is work that requires ongoing efforts to address systemic barriers, challenge existing biases, and reimagine our collective culture,” said Reem Ali, Inclusion Officer. “We must take a deeper look into how Black people are navigating their belonging in this community through oppression and opportunity.”

A recording of a conversation with Ali and City Councillor Kemi Akapo can be viewed on the City’s Instagram account.

On August 1, Ali invites the community to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination.

This Emancipation Day:

  • Call out systemic anti-Black racism and discrimination;

  • Attend local events celebrating Black communities, both this weekend and throughout the year;

  • Use your social position to centre and amplify Black voices;

  • Support individuals and organizations fighting anti-Blackness;

  • Educate yourself about Emancipation Day and the racist treatment of Black people in Canada and across the world, including Heritage Canada’s online resource about Emancipation Day. [https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/emancipation-day.html]

Local events taking place on or around Emancipation Day:

Freedom Cabaret - The Spirit and Legacy of Black Music on Tuesday, August 2 at Peterborough Square courtyard (entrance at Charlotte Street and Water Street). Poet and community organizer Niambi from Black Lives Matter Nogojiwanong will be kicking off this evening of music, dancing, poetry, and celebration of community at 6:30 p.m. Beau Dixon and crew will be on at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The Petes drafted McCallum in the fourth round, 69th overall in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. The Petes did not have a second and third-round pick for that draft.

McCallum played for Brantford 99ers U16 AAA during the 2021-22 season with 22 goals and 26 assists for 48 points in 27 games. The centreman racked up three assists in four games at the OHL Cup.

“It was a great summer where I'm developing right now and getting better," said McCallum. “I can't wait to start the season and hopefully win an OHL Championship and the Memorial Cup.”

The Delhi, Ont.-born centreman says models his play after Stanley Cup champion and Colorado Avalanche’s Gabriel Landeskog.

"He's a leader,” explained McCallum. “He also plays the physical and skilled game."

“Through our evaluations, what really attracted us to Brayden was the fact that he demonstrated some skill and ability to compete,” said Michael Oke, Petes general Manager. “Game-in and game-out, every shift, he made something happen on the ice.”

Braydon is not the only family member in the OHL as his brother, Landon plays in the OHL for the Sudbury Wolves.

Other effects include:

• Lowered heart rate, blood pressure and breathing

• Sedation, long blackouts, and coma

• Skin ulcers and abscesses that do not heal on their own

PPH urges those that use drugs to use them safely. Never use alone and always have Naloxone nearby.
