The seventh annual Tebey Golf Classic has been announced for June 1 at Wildfire Golf Club in support of Peterborough Youth Services and the YES Shelter announced on Thursday.

“I’m really looking forward to getting home for our annual golf fundraiser with GPSHF, Your Family Health Team Foundation,” said Tebey. "As someone who has expressed my own challenges with mental health well-being over the years, it's really important to me to support initiatives in this area of health services."

Foursomes are $1000 and include a shotgun tee-off, meet and greet with Tebey, access to private in-person VIP acoustic performance with Tebey and special guests (TBA), activities and contests throughout the course, meals, prizes, professional photos of your group, and a chance to play one of Ontario’s top private courses that has hosted PGA tour events.

A $200 tax receipt will be provided to all foursomes, with funds raised going to support Youth Mental Health programming through Peterborough Youth Services and YES Shelter for Youth and Families.

"The Tebey Golf Classic is one of the highlights of our year at YES,” said Aimeé Le Lagadec, Yes Shelter executive director. “This incredible event has become crucial to the support provided to young people and families struggling severely with their mental health while experiencing homelessness in Peterborough."

“These funds help us to reduce wait times and to provide specialized services for children, youth and families,” said Gord Langill, Peterborough Youth Services Executive Director. “Mental health issues are affecting more people in more complex ways, and resources are limited, so every fund-raised dollar makes a difference.”

A shotgun tee-off will be scheduled at 12:30 p.m., with an outdoor acoustic performance taking place at 7 p.m.

The annual Tebey Golf Classic raises funds in partnership with GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation, to support youth mental health programming across the Peterborough region. More than $175,000 has been raised over the past six years creating programming that previously did not exist in our community. This includes:

  • Reducing wait times and to provide specialized services for children, youth and families

  • Covid-19 Response Drop In Centre - YES Youth Emergency Shelter for Youth and Families

  • YES Homelessness Prevention Program partnership with Peterborough Youth Services and YES Year one and Year two Funding

  • 211 Awareness Campaign – Peterborough Youth Services and YES Shelter

  • Ongoing education for Mental Health Clinicians of the Peterborough Family Health Team to support free patient mindfulness programming

Peterborough's Nolan Burke One Goal Away From 50 For OHL Season

A two-goal night for Peterborough’s Nolan Burke of the Sarnia Sting against the Hamilton Bulldogs puts him at 49 goals on the season, one short of breaking the 50 mark from Wednesday’s game.

Both goals came from rebounds on point shots. Burke scooped up the puck and got it past Bulldog goaltenders Matteo Drobac in the first period and Tristain Malboeuf in the third.

Burke is currently second in the league with goals behind Matthew Maggio of the Windsor Spitfires. He ranks first in the league with powerplay goals with 22, ahead of Peterborough Petes’s Avery Hayes with 19.

Only four other Sarnia Sting players have broken the 50-mark in OHL history during the regular season. Reid Boucher in 2012-13 (62), Steven Stamkos in 2007-08 (58), Ivan Novoseltsev in 1998-99 (57) and Jon Sim in back-to-back seasons from 1995-97 (56).

The 20-year-old forward can break the 50-mark on St. Patrick’s Day this Friday on the road against the Guelph Storm. His father Tim Burke organized the 20th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Peterborough that took place last Sunday.

Honour An Animal Lover and Help the New Peterborough Animal Care Centre Through Memorial Donations

A generous memorial donation was made to the Peterborough Humane Society’s new Animal Care Centre by Gloria Porter-MacDonald in tribute of her late son Drew MacDonald.

She chose to donate to the Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) in memory of her son who passed in January 2020. A dog adoption suite has been named in his honour and will also be displayed on PACC’s Donor Wall.

“Drew was an owner/operator in the transportation industry. He was a gentle giant; kind, a loyal friend, a team player and willing to help,” his mother shared. “Drew had a sense of humour, a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for those who risk life and limb for others.”

Gloria says Drew’s experience with dogs began with a Doberman Pinscher.

“Later he brought home two bonded Beagle puppies from the Peterborough Humane Society rather than leave one behind unadopted. Drew loved his dogs,” said Gloria. “When it was necessary for our family to re-home Drew's two Beagles, Buddy and Sam, we felt comfortable knowing there was a service available to assist in finding a new home for them. We wanted to support the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre in improving the needs of our local community for pets and animals in memory of Drew's love of dogs.”

The Peterborough Animal Care Centre is now open at 1999 Technology Dr. in Peterborough with a grand opening event scheduled for June. The centre features a state-of-the art Animal Adoption & Education Centre, Publicly Accessible & High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic and a Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre.

“We are honoured to recognize Drew and his love for animals through our new Centre. This donation to the Centre will not only impact the lives of the animals in our care but our entire community and beyond,” said Peterborough Humane Society executive director Shawn Morey. “Memorial gifts are an incredible way to leave a lasting impact, and we are truly thankful to be a part of Drew’s memory. His love for animals will live on for generations to come through this gift.”

Donations are still needed to reach the capital campaign goal. To learn how to contribute, visit the website.

Oshawa Couple's Viral TikTok Shows Stolen Camping Trailer Allegedly Fleeing OPP Pursuit On Hwy. 401 in Northumberland

Oshawa residents Mike Sidey and his girlfriend Elizabeth Williams were driving westbound on Hwy. 401 in Northumberland Sunday morning when they encountered an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) operation to stop a fleeing truck towing an allegedly stolen camping trailer.

mike sidey and girlfriend elizabeth williams. photo courtesy of mike sidey.

“It was definitely different that’s for sure. It was entertaining, something that you wouldn’t really see unless you were watching it on T.V. or at the movies or something like that,” said Sidey. “It was like Grand Theft Auto in real life.”

On that Sunday morning, he recalls merging onto the 401 from Trenton at the same time as the OPP officer.

“That was at 11:30 a.m. We got on the 401, we merged, (the OPP officer) drove away, no lights, no sirens, no nothing. Just doing his regular, routine patrol.”

About 3 to 5 minutes later, traffic began to slow down. Sidey noticed the officer on the side of the highway.

“I saw the OPP officer sitting on the side of the highway and standing outside his vehicle trying to flag two participants down.”

The participants, two camping trailers in the right lane, were being passed by a tractor trailer in the other lane.

As the trailers passed the officer, Sidey says the officer threw his hands in the air “in disgust.”

“That’s when the back trailer decided to cut over to the left lane, and started driving off. I slowed down and I actually looked at the people in the (vehicle). I tried to get his attention but he wouldn’t even look at us,” said Sidey.

The trailer then began swaying between both the right and left lanes, and Sidey noticed its stairs were still out.

“That’s when I started (recording). I had my phone up on my dash recording, then my girlfriend took the phone to record more and put them on TikTok.”

Sidey’s video currently has over 300,000 TikTok views and over 10,000 likes.

The video shows the officer pursuing the truck towing the camping trailer in an attempt to pull the vehicle over. The trailer takes the Big Apple exit off of Hwy. 401 and into Colborne.

That trailer, according to OPP, was allegedly stolen from Northumberland.

“When we got home, around 12:30 p.m., my buddy had sent me a link saying that they were stolen trailers. I was like, what are the odds we got that on video?!”

An Ottawa man, 59, was charged with a number of offences, including flight from a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, two drug charges, operating an unsafe vehicle and driving a motor vehicle while under licence suspension.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Belleville on April 24.
