Peterborough Man Arrested After Officers Discovered Impairment In Lansdowne Street Parking Lot

A 43-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges after an incident Monday evening.

At roughly 7:56 p.m. a man was at a Lansdowne Street West parking lot where officers believed the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He failed to comply with the officer’s breath demand and was arrested.

The man wass arrested and charged with:

• Failure or refusal to comply with demand

The accused is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Juno-Award Winning Rock Band Billy Talent to Take Centre Stage At the Peterborough Memorial Centre On Aug. 6

The Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) stage is going to be rocked as multi-Juno award-winning band Billy Talent is hitting the stage for Aug. 6, announced on Tuesday morning.

The Canadian punk quartet Billy Talent spent the latter part of the 1990s building a hard-won grassroots following before breaking out into mainstream success in 2003.

Their Juno Award-winning self-entitled debut album went quadruple-platinum,. As Subsequent albums such as Billy Talent II and III went multi-platinum and to the top of the Canadian Albums chart.

By the time of 2016's Afraid of Heights, the band had become a highly decorated rock act with an international fan base and years of hard touring to their credit. After a six-year gap, they returned with their sixth set, 2022's Crisis of Faith, which landed three consecutive number one songs at Canadian Rock Radio, leading to two Juno Nominations.

Bands Crown Lands and NOBRO are joining Billy Talent as opening acts. Crown Lands is a Juno Award winning rock duo from Oshawa as NOBRO is an all-female Canadian rock band from Quebec.

Tickets go on sale March 1 at 10 a.m. online, by phone at 705-743-3561 or in person at the PMC Box Office. Tickets are priced at $60.99, $80.99 and $90.99 (plus applicable fees). One dollar from each ticket sold will be donated to War Child Canada to help to provide aid to children and families in war and conflict areas.

Combustibles Close to Heater Cause Evening Garage Fire On Ravenwood Drive

A light smoke and a fire broke out in a Ravenwood Drive garage on Thursday evening.

There were 17 Peterborough Fire Services firefighters who arrived on the scene.

The first responders noticed the smoke from an attached garage and quickly extinguished a couch that was on fire without incident.

There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire was due to be a heater too close to combustibles.

City of Peterborough Receives 2023 Call2Recycle’s Leader in Sustainability Award

The City of Peterborough has been recognized as a recipient of Call2Recycle’s Leader in Sustainability Award for 2023 in recognition of the community’s outstanding results in diverting batteries from landfills, announced on Monday.

Peterborough residents diverted 4,241 kgs of batteries from the landfill in 2023 using the municipality’s battery collection options, helping to ensure the environmentally responsible disposal and reuse of the materials.

The City of Peterborough works with Call2Recycle, a not-for-profit organization that provides battery recycling programs nationwide to divert batteries from going to the City’s landfill.

“Thanks to your contributions and support of valued partners like you, Call2Recycle increased collections by 32 per cent in 2023, diverting almost 6 million kilograms of batteries from landfill,” in a statement made by Call2Recycle.

Batteries can be dropped off at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 400 Pido Rd. and at locations throughout the city for safe disposal:

• City Hall, 500 George St. N.

• Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St. ptbolibrary.ca

• Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr.

Deadline For Peterborough County 2024 Community Recognition Awards Nominations Extended to March 8

Nominations for the Peterborough 2024 Community Recognition Awards have been extended from March 1 to the 8, announced by Peterborough County on Monday Morning.

The awards are for any resident or group in the County of Peterborough who has raised the profile or made an extraordinary contribution to the community.

“Peterborough County is an exceptional place, with extraordinary people and an outstanding business community,” said Bonnie Clark, County Warden. “Every two years we showcase models of true excellence among us through our Peterborough County awards ceremony. I encourage you to nominate a deserving friend, neighbour or business for the Community Recognition Awards.”

The County notes that any nominee cannot receive a County of Peterborough Recognition Award for a similar category within the last fifteen years.

Unless otherwise indicated, there shall be one award for each Township in each category noted below.

• Accessibility Recognition: A group, individual or business who has contributed to accessibility improvements within the County of Peterborough. (One County-wide award.)

• Acts of Heroism: An individual who has displayed bravery in the face of personal risk, injury or death at an incident that took place either in the County of Peterborough or was to the benefit of a Peterborough County resident and which action did not occur while the individual was acting in his/her professional capacity while on duty. (Unlimited nominations.)

• Agricultural Leadership: Any individual or farm enterprise is eligible to be nominated in this category. Factors that will be used to assess the nomination will include such items as innovations, agricultural promotion and the recognition brought to the County through its operation. It may include involvement in agricultural organizations. Leadership in the agricultural community will also be considered

• Business Leadership: Any new and successful initiatives of both new and established businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the County, including tourism promotion. (One County-wide award.)

• Community Volunteer of the Year: Any group or individual who has demonstrated community involvement or volunteerism within the County.

• Environmental/Sustainability Recognition: Nominees will have demonstrated innovation and/or leadership in environmental conservation, stewardship and sustainability by having:

  • Developed innovative green technologies or

  • Started businesses to support and encourage sustainable living, or

  • Donated conservation lands or easements or

  • Undertaken ecosystem restoration or research or

  • Educated others about the importance of protecting the environment or

  • Achieved the overall vision for sustainability through one of the identified theme areas set out in the Sustainable Peterborough Plan: Agriculture and Local Food; Climate Change; Cultural Assets; Economic Development and Employment; Healthy Communities; Land Use Planning; Natural Assets; Energy; Transportation; Waste; and Water. (One County-wide award.)

• Heritage Preservation: An individual or group who has promoted heritage and preserves the history of Peterborough County. This could include, but is not limited to, Fair boards, Women’s Institutes, historical societies, etc. A community, public or private organization which has reached a significant milestone such as the 100th anniversary of the organization is also eligible for this award. (Please note: Birthdays and anniversaries are recognized on an on-going basis as requested.) (One County-wide award.)

• Leadership in Arts and Culture: A group or individual who has demonstrated excellence in the arts, bringing recognition to the County.

• Sporting Excellence: Any team or individual who has won a provincial, national or international sporting event. (One County-wide award.)

• Youth: A person aged 25 years or younger who has contributed to the betterment of the community and/or school environment.

Nomination forms are available throughout the County at the County of Peterborough office located at 470 Water St., Peterborough, from any Local Municipal Office, Township Fire Chiefs, local Police Service Boards, schools, libraries throughout the County, area Chambers of Commerce and Community Care organizations. They can also be completed online.

Completed and signed nomination forms with supporting documents provided to the County Clerk up to and including March 8 are requested.

The Peterborough County Awards and Bursaries Committee will review the Nominations and make recommendations to County Council and will select and announce the recipients in April.

Peterborough Man Arrested For Assault After Argument Over Food Delivery Service

A 43-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges after two separate incidents regarding assault and failure to comply with Undertaking on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

On Saturday night, a man and woman got into a domestic argument over a food delivery service. The man allegedly assaulted the woman, resulting in minor injuries.

The man was later released on an Undertaking with conditions to avoid further contact with the woman. On Sunday morning, the man breached the no-contact order and contacted the woman.

As a result, the man was arrested and charged with:

• Failure to Comply with Undertaking

• Assault – Spousal

The accused has been released on an Undertaking and Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear in court on March 19.

Peterborough Petes Drop Pair of Weekend Road Games; Eight Points Out of Playoff Spot

The Peterborough Petes woes continue as they dropped a pair of road games to the Sudbury Wolves on Friday and Soo Greyhounds on Saturday and find themselves eight points out of a playoff spot behind the Barrie Colts.

The Petes had a rare Thursday night off before playing in back-to-back road games starting with the Sudbury Wolves.

While Peterborough had a great start with a 2-0 lead in the first period, they could not hold it going into the third as Sudbury tied things up to force overtime.

With two minutes left in the extra frame, Sudbury had an odd-man rush and capitalized on a one-timer for the 3-2 comeback win.

Peterborough had to put the game behind them quickly as they took on the Soo Greyhounds on Saturday night.

Petes goaltender Liam Sztuska was peppered all night as the Greyhounds had 14 shots on net each period.

Soo got to a hot start and never looked back, scoring three goals in the first to Peterborough’s one in the first period.

The home team continued their momentum with two more goals as the Petes were shut out in the second.

Peterborough drew even in goals with one apiece with the Greyhounds but led to a 6-2 loss, dropping their record to 17-32-7.

The Petes are eight points behind the Barrie Colts who occupy the final playoff spot in the East Division. The team has 12 games left in the regular season to try and right the ship for a postseason bid.

Five teams in the East have already clinched a playoff spot in the London Knights Sudbury Wolves, North Bay Battalion, Oshawa Generals and Mississauga Steelheads. The Ottawa 67’s, Kingston Frontenacs and Barrie Colts occupy the next three spots in the conference but have yet to secure a playoff berth.

The Petes come home to play the Erie Otters this Thursday for Pride Night in support of Sport A Rainbow. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

WWE Superstar Bobby Roode References Peterborough Roots During Popular Wrestling Podcast

Famed World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Wrestler/Superstar and Peterborough’s own Bobby Roode appeared on the popular wrestling podcast ‘INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet’ which was released on Youtube Friday morning.

The episode was filmed in late January prior to the WWE pa-per-view, Royal Rumble. During the podcast, topics such as Roode’s wrestling timeline, his neck injury, his role with the WWE and mentioned Peterborough on several occasions.

He referenced Gary and Pete Dalliday, CHEX TV and being able to remain in Peterborough despite constantly being on the road for WWE.

“Once you’re a ‘Boro’ guy, you don’t leave the Boro. You know what I mean?” said Roode.

Roode had two neck surgeries dating back to Nov. 30, 2022 where he had his C5/C6 fused. His second surgery on May 11 — which was his 47th birthday — had C4/5 cervical fusion. He believes he suffered the injury in 2012 while wrestling for Total Nonstop Wrestling. After a decade, the wear and tear from that event led to the surgeries.

He wrestled in the par-per-view event ‘Sacrifice’ against Rob Van Dam in a ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship where he suffered the injury.

“I could go through the day without going through any sort of pain” said Roode. The issue with me was my strength.”

The Peterborough native was asked if he could return to the wrestling ring after his neck surgeries and Roode said he could not perform full-time.

"I'm feeling better; mentally, I don't think I could take the risk of going back in the ring and working a full-time schedule,” said Roode.

The former world champion remains employed with the WWE, working as a match producer.

Holy Cross Secondary School Brings Literature to Life With Production of 'Shakespeare In Love The Play' For Three Shows

The students of Holy Cross Secondary School in grades 9 to 12 are putting on the production of 'Shakespeare In Love The Play' for three dates on Feb. 28, 29 and March 1.

The play is based on the screenplay by Marc Norman, and Tom Stoppard was adapted for theatre by Lee Hall.

It is being produced by Holy Cross teacher Serena McKenna as it is her 24th production.

“There are a number of staff members and students involved behind the scenes which speaks to the supportive relationships that exist at Holy Cross,” she said. “Shakespeare said a good heart never changes and I see this in the staff and students here. We can always count on each other.”

Ella Doris is taking the female lead in playing the role of Viola DeLesseps.

 “Having been involved in the previous productions at Holy Cross, I am very excited to see how this show is evolving and being involved in a performance of this size is an overwhelmingly tremendous experience,” she explained. “I am looking forward to opening night and feel proud and grateful of the work that has been put in by the cast and crew.  This has been a great experience to have in my Senior year.”

Only one Grade 9 student has an acting role in the production as this play is Xy Pascual's first-ever time taking the stage.

“Being the only Grade 9 in this play is a bit stressful but thankfully I have formed a new relationship with my castmates and I have been made more comfortable in stepping out of my comfort zone,” she said “I am already excited to be involved in the next Holy Cross Production.”

The play is open for the public to watch for all three dates with ticket prices at $20 for adults and $15 for students at the door.
