Robbery Suspect Sought After Taking Several Items Including Money
/The Peterborough Police Service is looking for a female robbery suspect who took several items, including cash after an incident early Thursday morning.

At roughly 3:45 a.m., employees called police to the McDonnel Street and Aylmer Street area. A woman brandishing a knife, entered the store, demanded cash from the employee and then left the store on foot according to a police report. She left with cash, several gift cards, cigarettes and food. Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspect. The employee was not injured.
The suspect was described to police as:
Female, Caucasian
Approximately 5’7 with a medium build
Wearing a grey hoodie with the hood pulled up tight around her head and face, grey pants with a black backpack

Turner Evans's Hat Trick Helps Peterborough Lakers Hold Off Third-Period Surge From Brooklin L.C. For 7-6 Win
/Turner Evans’s hat trick helped the Peterborough Lakers stop the comeback bid from Brooklin L.C. to hold on for a 7-6 win at the Iroquois Park Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

Brooklin drew first blood with two straight goals within the first three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Peterborough answered back with a pair of scores thanks to Turner Evans and Owen Hiltz to tie it up at two. Neither team could score in the second half of the period and remained a 2-2 game after one.
Peterborough took over the game in the second with a perfect period. Joey Cupido scored unassisted to kick off the frame just 3:40 in. Joe Resetarits and Carter Page joined the scoresheet and Peterborough pulled ahead with a 5-2 lead. In the last 16 seconds of the period, Evans scored his second of the game to cap off the period with a 6-2 lead headed into the third.
Brooklin was dialled in during the third as Dawson Theede scored 2:05 into the period, breaking the scoreless streak for over 39 minutes. Evans completed his hat trick to give Peterborough a 7-3 lead almost halfway through the period.
Theede tried to pull Brooklin within striking distance as he scored for the second time this game to cut the deficit to three. Brooklin rung off two back-to-back power-play goals (including a Theede hat trick) with 4:19 left to play and trailed the Lakers by one goal.
Peterborough stood firm as Lakers goaltender Landon Kells made 33 saves and held off the last of Brooklin’s surge for a 7-6 win.
The victory moves Peterborough to a 5-4 record and third place in the league. The Lakers get little rest for their next game, as they host the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.
Peterborough Pete Tommy Purdeller Signs With Hometown Team
/The Peterborough Petes’s Tommy Purdeller has signed with his hometown team, HC Pustertal of the ICE Hockey League, ahead of the 2024-25 season, announced on Thursday.

Purdeller has spent the last two seasons playing for the Petes.
"Tommy is a very good young player who has developed well in Peterborough,” said Jason Jaspers, HC Pustertal head coach. “I had the chance to speak to his coaches there and also to Tommy himself. He has a great character. If he is prepared to give it his all then he has a great future ahead of him."
The Brunico, Italy native was originally selected by the Petes in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2022 CHL Import Draft. In two seasons with the Petes, the Red Bull Hockey Academy product played in 116 OHL games, scoring 23 goals and 42 assists for 65 points. In 2023, Purdeller played in 17 playoff games for the Petes, scoring twice and adding an assist to help Peterborough win the 2023 OHL Championship.
"I chose the HCP because I am convinced of the path we will take this year,” said Purdeller. “I am looking forward to the new challenge of growing as a player and helping the team in every way. I can hardly wait to play in front of our fans and give everything I can to celebrate many victories in the Intercable Arena. For me, there is only one goal and that is clear, to play as successfully as possible in the long term and help bring a championship title to the Pustertal. I am really looking forward to seeing all the Puschtra again."
“On behalf of the Petes, I’d like to thank Tommy for his dedication to the team and the city of Peterborough over the last two seasons,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations. “From winning an OHL Championship last season to leading the team in points and serving as an Assistant Captain this season, Tommy has left his mark on the Petes organization. With Purdeller departure, Martin Matejicek holds one of two import positions available for the Petes next season. The Petes selected Czech forward Adam Novotný with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 CHL Import Draft on Wednesday.

City's Social Services Division Given Rainbow Registered Accreditation

This accreditation, administered by Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce, reflects a commitment to creating a safer, more welcoming, and inclusive space for the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
The Rainbow Registered accreditation process evaluates applicants on four categories of criteria:
policies and practices are non-discriminatory and respectful of sexual orientation and gender identity.
provides diversity and inclusion training for staff and contributes to public education on diversity and inclusion.
demonstrates leadership and commitment to LGBT+ inclusion beyond its day-to-day operations.
has established an organizational culture that is LGBT+ inclusive and affirmative.
“Inclusion is a core value of our Social Services team,” said Councillor Alex Bierk and Councillor Keith Riel in a joint statement. “The Rainbow Registered designation reflects that our Social Services programs are respectful and welcoming for both staff and visitors; it also signals our ongoing commitment to policies and practices that support employee equity, providing 2SLGBTQI+ training opportunities for staff, and enhancing cultural competency in all operations.”
The Peterborough Museum and Archives also announced its Rainbow Registered accreditation earlier in June.

Ontario Government Invests Up to $6 Million In Grants For Seniors
/The Ontario Government is investing up to $6 million through the Seniors Community Grant Program to support 282 community projects that help seniors and older adults stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected.

“The Seniors Community Grants Program is a great example of how our government is working for local communities,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “We are pleased to provide funding for so many programs that bring older people together to avoid being socially isolated, learn new skills, get fit, enjoy group activities and stay connected to their neighbours and friends.”
Up to $25,000 per project is invested in local programs, services and events to provide seniors with opportunities for greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement according to a press release. It continues to state that Program is a unique Ontario government grant designed to reduce social isolation, fight ageism and create positive connections.
“Seniors need to connect with the community and stay fit, healthy, and active,’’ said Dave Smith, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP. “By investing in seniors programs, we will be helping more adults get the programs and services they need to live healthy, independent lives.”
Seniors Community Grants projects receiving funding in Peterborough this year include The Alzheimer Society of Peterborough Kawartha Lakes Northumberland and Haliburton. They will receive up to $23,209 to provide rural seniors living with dementia and their caregivers a series of ‘night out’ events to support socialization, reduce stigma and build a more dementia-friendly community.
Age-friendly Peterborough will receive up to $25,000 to transform the way seniors age in place by providing customized health, fitness, social, educational and recreational workshops at several City apartments primarily occupied by older adults according to Jayne Culbert, Age-friendly Coordinator.
“The proportion of older adults 65 and better increased 16 per cent in the Peterborough region from 2016 to 2021 and that number will continue to grow,”she said. “Twenty-five per cent of the residents who live in the greater Peterborough area are seniors and, in some townships, it is over 30 per cent. This is significant as the national and provincial average is 19 per cent. Receiving funding from the Ontario Government helps organizations to support our local older population through innovative projects.”

Trent Valley Archives Hosting ‘Peterborough Perpetrators,' True Crime Walks In Downtown Core
/Due to popular demand, Trent Valley Archives (TVA) is offering its ‘Peterborough Perpetrators’ true crime walk in the downtown core.

Walking dates are July 12, 19, Aug.16 and 23 at 7 p.m.
They are led by Madison More, a researcher and tour guide. The tour will feature stories such as the 1970s shooting of Grand Hotel owner Murray Green, the mysterious disappearance of an early lumber jack fueled by the discovery of human remains and an escape from the Peterborough jail and the ensuing police chase.

Peterborough Petes Draft Adam Novotný In CHL Import Draft
/The Peterborough Petes have drafted Czech forward Adam Novotný with the eighth overall selection in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft on Wednesday.

“We’re excited to select Adam with our first round pick,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations . “Adam is a player that I have seen in person and other members of our hockey staff have watched extensively on video. We believe that the Petes are an excellent option for him to continue his development.”
Novotný is a forward from Nový Bydžov, Czechia. He played 48 games for Mountfield HK U20 last season, scoring 32 goals and adding 27 assists for 59 points.
He was called up to Mountfield HK of the Czech Extraliga, where he played 10 games. Novotný scored in his debut for Mountfield HK in October to become the youngest player to score a goal in the Czech Extraliga at 15. The 6’1”, left-handed shot represented Czechia at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge in P.E.I., scoring one goal and adding two assists in seven games. Novotný, who was born in November 2007, is eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft.
“Adam is a very highly offensively skilled player,” said Patrick O’Connor, Petes assistant coach and director of player personnel. “He’s someone that we’ve followed for quite some time and we feel that his game would be a very good fit in North America. He’s a 2007 birth date, which makes him a great fit for our roster for years to come.”
Peterborough originally held the ninth pick in the draft; however, one team passed, resulting in the Petes moving up one spot. The Petes elected to pass on their second-round pick in the draft as defenceman Martin Matejicek is expected to return and occupy the other import slot on the team.
