Both teams put their offense on display in the first period, scoring six goals. Joe Resetarits and Holden Cattoni scored a pair while Thomas Hoggarth and Colton Armstrong got a single.

“Usually you kind of feel each other out but it was wide open from the get go,” said Mike Hasen, Lakers head coach. “Everybody capitalizes on mistakes at both ends of the floor. She was wide open, she was very helter-skelter to say the least, in the first period.”

The Lakers opened up the second period with a three-goal run. Hggarth got his second goal while Taylor Jensen and Austin Hasen joined the scoresheet for Peterborough. The teams traded two goals apiece to close out the period and the Lakers held an 11-8 lead going into the third.

“That was the most fun I’ve had, definitely,” said Jensen. “Kells did awesome, Ogilvie, Gilray, Pace did awesome. Everyone did awesome. I’m happy to play with all of these guys.”

Rob Hellyer opened the scoring just 48 seconds in before Brooklin tried to mount a comeback. They scored two goals within the first three minutes of the game to make it 12-10 with 17 minutes left to play. Lakers goaltender Landon Kells shut the door afterward and let nothing pass him for the rest of the game. Peterborough held on for the 14-10 win and took game one of the best-of-seven series.

Game two returns to the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday starting at 8 p.m.

Peterborough AAA Hockey Council Honours Audrey Runnalls With Memorial Fund

To tribute a beloved community member, the Peterborough AAA Hockey Council honours the Audrey Runnalls Memorial Fund.

It was established by Bill Juby and aims to assist players in financial need and ensure that every child can participate in the sport they love.

The $12,500 is drawn from the proceeds of the longstanding PrimeSite Midget Hockey Tournament, now called the Century 21 Tournament of Champions. The tournament has been in the Peterborough hockey community for over two decades.

Organized by Juby, the tournament consistently provided annual bursaries to support young athletes. The efforts continue under the Audrey Runnalls Memorial Fund. Juby had coached Midget teams for over two decades.

Juby dedicated a significant portion of his life to local hockey and fastball. He expressed his desire to honour the memory of Runnalls through this fund according to a press release. She was known for her unwavering support, positive spirit and volunteerism within the hockey community.

“Audrey was an incredible individual whose dedication to the sport and our community was unmatched,” said Juby. “By establishing this fund in her name, we hope to continue her legacy of support and inclusivity in Peterborough hockey.”

Audrey’s sons, Karl and Rick, played in the system.

“Both Rick and I are very proud that our mother’s legacy continues to benefit the Peterborough hockey community and the players in need,” said Karl. She was truly Peterborough’s ‘Hockey Mom,’ not just for us but for all the Petes minor hockey players.”

Chad Cavanagh, Peterborough AAA President was a former player in Bill Juby’s program.

“The Audrey Runnalls Memorial Fund provides financial assistance to families who might otherwise struggle to afford the costs associated with AAA hockey,” he said. “This initiative ensures that all aspiring players have the chance to develop their skills and enjoy the camaraderie and life lessons that come with being part of a team.  This is also a great opportunity to share the legacy of a wonderful hockey parent who brought an infectious positive energy and attitude to minor hockey.”

In recognizing Audrey Runnalls through this memorial fund, the Peterborough AAA Hockey Council says it wants to honour her memory and reaffirm its commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all players.

Leahy's Farm and Market Goes All Out In 50th Anniversary Celebration

The Leahy family welcomed the public to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Leahy’s Farm and Market in Douro-Dummer on Saturday afternoon.

The second generation of Leahy’s farms saw 11 brothers and sisters. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The event welcomed guests to mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, live music, a corn maze, a chicken display, a documentary screening of the farm and a special anniversary cake.

“It's a family business that's been passed from my parents to us and our kids are now completely involved in it so it's a great honour and it's amazing how quickly 50 years goes by,” said Doug Leahy.

The ceremonies began at 2 p.m., where the Leahys addressed the guests with stories and expressed gratitude for the City and County supporting the farm for 50 years.

“To see everyone come out like this, a lot of the time, we're in the field picking corn or picking stuff and we don't always see the customers that come through but they're all showing up today and all we can say is a big thank you to everyone,” said Doug.

During Doug’s speech, he declared one of the gardens to be named ‘Julie’s Garden’ after his mother, Julie Leahy, who started the farm with Frank Leahy in 1974.

Dignitaries on the municipal, provincial and federal levels recognized the farm’s milestone. Bonnie Clark, Peterborough County Warden; Dave Smith, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP and Michelle Ferreri, Peterborough-Kawartha MP gave public speeches and gave certificates of recognition to the Leahy family.

Other dignitaries, such as Sherry Senis, Selwyn Mayor and Heather Watson, Douro-Dummer Mayor were in attendance and spoke at the event.
