Minister of Long-Term Care Visits AON Inc.'s Newly-Built Station Place In Havelock

As Minister of Long-Term Care, Natalia Kusendova-Bashta made a stop in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, she was happily greeted by the staff of AON Inc.’s Station Place long-term care home in Havelock on Tuesday afternoon.

Roughly 110 staff were out to greet the Mississauga Centre MPP with clapping and cheers as Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith escorted her to the facility.

The home has been newly built and is set to admit residents this Monday with a capacity of 128.

The groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 9, 2023. The project was to be completed by September this year but it was completed ahead of schedule in the summer.

The long-term care home was part of the provincial government’s $6.4 billion commitment to build more than 30,000 new beds by 2028, along with 28,000 upgraded long-term care beds across the province.

The site is approximately 86,355 sq ft. and is located at 628 Old Norwood Rd. in Havelock. AON won the bid to build the long-term care home on Feb 17, 2022.

The home features dining, activity areas, lounges and access to outdoor spaces, accommodating 128 beds.

Peterborough Petes Hosting Season Ticket Member BBQ Next Tuesday

The Peterborough Petes’s Season Ticket Member BBQ is back this year, running at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Sept. 16 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., announced on Tuesday.

This year’s BBQ will feature food catered by Chemong Lodge, refreshments, and inflatables from Castle Kid. The event will also feature introductions to the 2025-26 Peterborough Petes roster, including a full-team autograph session as well as speeches from coaches and management.

“We’re very excited to announce that we will once again be hosting the Season Ticket Member BBQ here at the PMC,” said Tyler Hall, Petes Coordinator of Season Ticket Sales and Service. “The BBQ is always a great opening to the year, and we’re looking forward to welcoming back our Season Ticket Members as we get ready to open the 2025-26 season on the 18th.”

Only Season Ticket Members (including corporate partners and suite holders) are invited to attend the exclusive event along with their families.

Attendees are asked to enter the BBQ through the main entrance of the PMC (north side).

The Petes conclude their 2025 preseason on Friday when they travel to Sarnia to take on the Sting at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena at 7:05 p.m.

Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre's 'Take Back the Night' Hits Peterborough Square For Sexual Violence Awareness

The Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre (KSAC) is hosting its annual Take Back the Night (TBTN) advocacy and awareness event at the Peterborough Square Courtyard on Sept. 18 from 5 to 9 p.m.

This year’s theme of ‘Rage and Resistance.’ According to KSAC, it reflects the feelings of anger with how prevalent sexual violence still is.

The event is free and open to anyone. Light refreshments are available for participants.

The event will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a variety of community agencies tabling to share information about their resources and how individuals can connect for support, says KSAC. Art supplies are available for anyone to drop by and create posters for the march later in the evening.

From 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., there will be poetry, speakers, and performers, followed by the candlelit solidarity march.

Stunt Driving Laid After Driver's Cellphone Video Surfaces to Police

A 26-year-old Peterborough man is facing several charges after an investigation into a cellphone video showing high rates of speed on Monday.

The Peterborough Police Traffic Management Unit was made aware of a cellphone video where the motor vehicle's owner recorded himself travelling 2.5 times the posted speed limit on The Parkway (150 km/h in a 60 km/h zone). 

Officers were able to confirm the date, time, location and speed of the vehicle. 

The driver was located and charged under the Highway Traffic Act with: 

• Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - speeding by 40 or more km/hr in a zone that is less than 80km\h

• Speeding 150 km/h in a 60 km/h zone

• Drive - hand-held communication device

The vehicle has been impounded for 14 days and the driver's license has been suspended for 30 days. 

The investigation is still ongoing.

George Street Getting Commemorative Crosswalk Installed This Fall to Honour Canadian Veterans

A commemorative crosswalk to honour Canadian veterans will be installed at the intersection of George and McDonnel streets this fall.

“The installation of this commemorative crosswalk is a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “It reflects the pride Peterborough has in its veterans and the importance of keeping their legacy alive. This project is a wonderful collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion, and I look forward to residents and visitors alike pausing to reflect as they pass through this meaningful space.”

The crosswalk was designed in collaboration with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 Peterborough. It will feature red and white stripes, the silhouette of a soldier, and the words ‘Lest We Forget.’

“This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the end of World War II, making this a very special tribute to all the men and women from Peterborough City and County who gave the ultimate sacrifice in both World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan and the numerous Peacekeeping Operations around the world in order for us to live free in this great country we call Canada,” said Robert Lloyd, President Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 Peterborough. 

The crosswalk will be installed while asphalt work at the intersection of George and McDonnel streets is underway.

Alf Curtis Home Improvements Inc. Founder Passes Away At 93

Alf Curtis, founder of Alf Curtis Home Improvements Inc., has passed away at the age of 93, as announced on his business’s social media on Monday.

He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday.

Visitation is at the Ashburnham Funeral Home at the following times:

• Thursday: 2 to 4 p.m. & 6 to 8 p.m.

• Friday: 10 to 11 a.m. (one hour prior to service)

The funeral service will take place this Friday at 11 a.m., followed by a reception and interment at Rosemount Memorial Gardens.

At the family’s request, guests are encouraged to dress casually.

All three of our store locations are closed on Friday in honour of Curtis and to allow their staff to attend the funeral service.

The family has requested that any donations be made to the Fairhaven Long Term Care Foundation or the Alzheimer Society.

In 1975, Alf Curtis founded the business, initially employing two people: himself and his wife, June Curtis. During the first year of operations, it expanded to include two new employees, including Alf's son, Larry Curtis.

The business initially began as a supply and installation company of aluminum products, including sidings, soffits, eavestroughs, storm doors, storm windows, awnings, and railings. Alf already had years of experience in installing these products before forming his own company.

Peterborough Petes Close Out Final Home Preseason Game With 3-2 Loss to the Kingston Frontenacs

In their final home preseason game, the Peterborough Petes lost a close game, 3-2, to the Kingston Frontenacs at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre on Sunday.

The game was a fundraiser for Norwood Minor Hockey and included a raffle, Chuck-A-Puck and a post-game autograph session with the Petes players.

Leon Kolarik scored his third goal of the preseason, while Kaden McGregor scored his first as a Pete (but did score a shootout goal againstt Erie on Aug. 30). Yanis Lutz picked up his third assist in as many games, as Thanasi Marentette and Francis Parish had an assist each. Dylan Lee-Stack started the game, stopping 16/18, before Masen Johnston took over for the second half, stopping 12/13. 

After the game, the team has reassigned the following players:

• Sebastian Dzieciol

• Joseph Cadorin

• Jonny Brooks

“As we move closer to the season, we’ve been forced to make some more very difficult decisions,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations. “These players all had a solid camp and we will continue to monitor their development and progress for future opportunities with the Peterborough Petes.”

The Petes conclude their 2025 preseason on Friday when they travel to Sarnia to take on the Sting at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena at 7:05 p.m.

Two Women Arrested After One Struck Another Woman's Hand With a Knife

Two Peterborough women are facing charges after an intimate partner violence incident, involving one woman striking another woman’s hand with a knife on Sunday afternoon.

At roughly 5 p.m., officers were dispatched to the fire station on Sherbrooke Street regarding a woman with a hand injury. Two women had been socializing near Millennium Park when a verbal argument escalated and one of the women was struck with a knife on the hand. The woman with the injury was treated and released by EMS at the scene. While the investigation was underway, the second woman walked by and was taken into custody.

A 53-year-old Peterborough woman was arrested and charged with:

• Failure to comply with undertaking

A 59-year-old Peterborough woman was arrested and charged with:

• Failure to comply with undertaking (party to the offence)

• Assault with a weapon - spousal

The women knew each other and had been under conditions that prevented them from interacting.

Both women are being held in custody on Monday.

Four Peterborough Lakers Drafted to National Lacrosse League

Four Peterborough Century 21 Lakers were drafted into the National Lacrosse League on Saturday.

Braedon Saris, Ben Trumble, Adam Thistlethwaite and Owen Hiltz all heard their name called during the six-round draft.

Hiltz led the pack with his third overall selection to the Toronto Rock. The Colorado Mammoth drafted Saris at number five, the Georgia Swarm took Trumble at number seven and Thistlethwaite went in the second round at 24th overall to the Rochester Knighthawks.

Saris was acquired from Cobourg in mid-June in exchange for Tommy Collins and Brampton’s third-round draft pick in 2026.

“Braedon just got better and better every time he stepped on the floor and I think he looked more confident every time he stepped on the floor with us,” said Lakers head coach Mike Hasen. “When he came in here this year he might have been a little bit in awe of the group he was playing with, but he took over and led us through that playoff stretch, doing great things.”

Trumble and Thistlethwaite are graduates of the Jr. A Lakers program. Trumble joins Carter Page and former Laker Jordan MacIntosh on the Swarm. Thistlethwaite will continue to play for Lakers head coach Mike Hasen, who also coaches the Knighthawks containing Mitch Ogilvie, Matt Gilray, Turner Evans, Austin Hasen and Brad McCulley.

“I’m just glad to be picked. I’m really excited for this opportunity; I think it’ll be a good one,” said Trumble. “I’m starting to reach out to the guys on the (Swarm). I can’t wait to get going.”

Hiltz spent the 2025 season with the PLL’s Carolina Chaos instead of playing box lacrosse in the MSL. In his rookie season with the Lakers in 2024 he scored 57 points in 24 games.

Two current Jr. A Lakers were also drafted, with OJLL Goalie of the Year Waukiigan Shognosh taken 14th overall by the Buffalo Bandits and forward Curtis Ward was picked in the fifth round, 62nd overall by the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.

NLL Faceoff Weekend is scheduled for Nov. 28 and 29.
