Career Expo Sees 90 People For AON Inc.'s Long-Term Care Home Station Place In Havelock

With AON Inc.’s long-term care home ‘Station Place’ undergoing construction in Havelock, their career expo saw 90 people fill the Havelock Centre last Thursday.

“This event was primarily to start the conversation with our community members about future employment opportunities,” said Cheryl Filiatrault, AON Inc.’s Manager – People & Culture. “The home will not be ready to open until summer 2025 so currently there are no positions to fill yet in Havelock. However, we will begin hiring in early 2025 and will be looking at 150+ new hires at that time.”

This was the first career expo AON Inc. held for Station Place. Filiatrault; Rebecca Hooper, human resources manager and April Coulter, chief nursing officer discussed several topics at the expo.

“We wanted to invite the community to come and spend some time with us and learn more about who we are at AON, what we stand for and the services that Station Place will bring to the community of Havelock,” said Filiatrault. “(We) presented information about the Home’s design, our approach to resident care, and about the many different career opportunities that we will come with Station Place’s opening in 2025.”

The site is located at 628 Old Norwood Rd. in Havelock. AON Inc. won the bid to build the 128-bed long-term care home on Feb. 17 last year. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred at the site on Aug. 9. The building is roughly 86,355 sq ft. and the project’s completion is slated for September next year.

“This home has been the buzz around AON for a few years now and to see it coming together has been exciting for everyone involved,” explained Filiatrault.

Those who missed this past expo will have more opportunities to attend another says Filiatrault.

“We plan to hold similar events in the surrounding communities over the coming months. We plan to host Career Expos in Campbellford, Norwood, Marmora, etc,” she said.

The home will have dining, activity areas, lounges, and access to outdoor spaces. Over 150 staff will work in the building.

Local Students Mentored In World of Choices Program To Explore Future Career Options

Over 200 local students learned from over 25 mentors at the Junior Achievement of Northern and Eastern Ontario (JA-NEO) World of Choices program about career paths at Living Hope Church on Thursday.

Students ranged from grades 8 to 10 from schools such as St. Martin’s, Adam Scott, Monsignor O’Donoghue and more. Each student listened to five different mentors to gain first-hand insight into career options, benefits and career challenges. Peterborough Fire Department, Peterboro Matboards and RBC were some of the many mentors present.

WOC is a career exploration event aimed at helping students discover new career choices and learn from local industry professionals. Students had the opportunity to get familiar with potential educational paths and grasp a better understanding of the day-to-day duties of several careers.

165 elementary school students were left with words of wisdom as they attended Junior Achievement of Northern and Eastern Ontario (JA-NEO) and Peterborough Petes’ World of Choices (WOC) program listening to various mentors about career paths on Thursday morning.

The event at the Peterborough Memorial Centre hosted grade 7 and 8 students from Crestwood, Chemong Public School, Prince of Wales and Immaculate Conception. They listened to five different mentors to gain first-hand insight into career options, benefits and career challenges in the professional sports and entertainment industry. Mentors included organizations from the Peterborough Petes, Rawscoe's Sport Collectibles, RBC, YourTV Cogeco, Corus Entertainment and more that spoke to the pre-teens.

WOC is a career exploration event aimed at helping students discover new career choices and learn from local industry professionals. Students had the opportunity to get familiar with potential educational paths and grasp a better understanding of the day-to-day duties of several careers.

“We’re excited to partner with The Peterborough Petes to help local students understand and explore a wide array of career options,” said John McNutt, JA-NEO president and CEO. “Following the completion of today’s program, students will feel empowered to continue their education towards a chosen career and be better equipped to meet the challenges of today’s working world.”

All participating students received a ticket to attend the Petes’ game that night with a family member against the Kingston Frontenacs.

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development Seeking New Board Members

The Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED) Board of Directors is accepting applications for new board members to serve for a three-year term beginning in April announced on Tuesday.

PKED says their ideal applicants will have demonstrated leadership in their industry, their commitment to the region’s growth and prosperity and will be capable of representing broad regional interests, and not just those of a specific industry, organization, or group.

A PKED board director expectations are to:

  • Feel passionate about growing the regional economy and willing to invest time and expertise into guiding PKED to fulfill its mission and mandate.

  • Possess a deep understanding of current business issues and trends and is committed to seeking solutions

  • Be committed to supporting the PKED team to capitalize on/pursue opportunities

  • Be well connected to the local business community, and committed to attending local business events

  • Be familiar with community economic development programs, policies and activities related investment attraction and growth

  • Understand how economic development seeks to improve the economic well-being and quality of life of a community by creating and retaining jobs and providing a stable tax base

  • Be age of majority, live or be employed in the City or County Peterborough

  • Have a post-secondary education or relevant business experience

  • Have previous board experience

  • Have a background in one or more of the following sectors is ideal: Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace, Agriculture, Cleantech, Tourism and Small Business

  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills, resourcefulness, and the ability to act collaboratively.

  • Have time and capacity available to meaningfully prepare for and participate in board meetings, discussions and PKED events.

The board meets monthly and there may be additional committee or special meetings from time to time.

Dr. Rosana Salvaterra Becomes New Alberta Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health

Retirement did not last long for Dr. Rosana Salvaterra as she was hired by Alberta Health as the new Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health announced Wednesday.

Salvaterra will begin her new role on Oct. 4 as she retires from her position of Medical Officer of Health for Peterborough Public Health (PPH) on Sept. 19. She has maintained that role since 2008 from Dr. Garry Humphreys who had retired.

“I am looking forward to providing Dr. Hinshaw with the additional support and assistance she needs to ensure the office of the CMOH (Chief medical officer of Health) fulfills its role and mandate,” said Salvaterra. “I recognize I have a great deal to learn about my new home and new public health system, and I hope I will be able to make a meaningful contribution as a member of the team.”

Salvaterra, 65, revealed that she wanted to move to Edmonton after retirement to be closer to her family last month.

Larry Stinson, PPH director of operations will become the interim CEO after Dr. Salvaterra’s retirement until Dr. Thomas Piggott assumes the role starting on Dec. 1.

“I am so pleased that Dr. Salvaterra has agreed to join our team in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Trent University Supports the Creation of 100 New Student Summer Jobs

More than 100 student summer jobs have been created through the renewed Trent Summer Work Experience Program (TSWEP), providing undergraduate and graduate students at Trent University career experience through paid summer employment opportunities announced Friday.

"While a summer job provides an important opportunity for university students to earn income, it also offers an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development by building connections and developing skills that will serve them well in their future career paths," explains Dr. Michael Khan, provost and vice-president Academic. “The Trent Summer Work Experience Program is one of the many ways Trent equips students with guaranteed career-building experiences alongside leading faculty and staff from across the University.”

A joint initiative of Careerspace and the Office of the Registrar, TSWEP provided funding support to create both part-time and full-time employment opportunities for Trent students this summer.

Through the program, positions were created in more than 60 departments at the University including the Office of Student Affairs, Housing Services, Bata Library, External Relations and Advancement, as well as within academic departments.

These positions allow students to access diverse hands-on work experience with opportunities to engage in research, marketing, data analysis, completing independent projects, assisting and developing ways to pivot department resources online.

“I’ve gained invaluable hands-on experience working for the Trent Community Research Centre,” says Momina Shahid, a Trent Business student. “TCRC has provided me with the ideal research experience as well as an amazing opportunity to work directly with members of the local community and community organizations.”

TSWEP covers the full cost of student salaries, at the regular student rate, for approved summer positions with Trent departments and faculty. To have been eligible for these new positions, students must be returning to study at Trent in the fall and have demonstrated financial need.
