Downtown Peterborough Introduces Mascot George King Of The Downtown
/There is a new face for downtown Peterborough: a mascot named George, King of Downtown. The Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area made the announcement at its annual general meeting Wednesday night at The Venue.

“We’ve pursued the idea of creating a downtown mascot for several years and I’m very pleased with the results," says DBIA Executive Director Terry Guiel. "You’ll be seeing George at parades, ribbon cuttings and downtown events. We’re seeing more and more families coming downtown and this will be a good way to engage them and get the kids excited."
The choice of a lion was inspired by the City of Peterborough’s Coat-of-Arms. The name George is inspired by George Street, a historic and thriving commercial district in the city—and one of the busiest streets in Peterborough.

A Bunch Of Young Girls Put Scarves Around Peterborough For People In Need
/On Saturday (October 24th), STRUTT and the Just Beyou.tiful Campaign—both of which empower young girls to do good and inspire inner beauty—teamed up for an amazing cause.
Six young girls ranging from Grade 4 to 7 tied up 16 scarves around the downtown core of Peterborough, with the following message on them: "I am not lost! If you are out in the cold, take this scarf to keep you warm."
"This was for a session teaching volunteerism," Niki Aliday from Just Beyou.tiful tells PTBOCanada. "One of the girls said to me, 'Even if one person uses a scarf, we did our job of keeping someone warm.' That makes my heart smile."
Here is Niki pictured below with the amazing young girls who made this happen...
A Day In A Wheelchair In Downtown Peterborough
/Peterborough DBIA Executive Director Terry Guiel calls it a "big, eye-opening experience" to see things at this level in the downtown core.
Dave Tuck, Terry Guiel and Andrea Dodsworth
Guiel was referring to his experience spending a day in a electric wheelchair—along with Peterborough Huskies General Manager Dave Tuck—in downtown Peterborough with local accessibility advocate Andrea Dodsworth, who lead the guys on the tour to show them what it's like to navigate stores and sidewalks.
Guiels spoke to 12 different business owners during the day about what they can do to make themselves more accessible, and met with Mayor Bennett to talk about the challenges and offer suggestions as to how to make the downtown more accessible. They also visited the Accessibility office at City Hall to discuss how they can work closer together on future accessibility projects.
After his experience, Guiel says it's important to be more pro-active when it comes to accessibility in the city. "It's the right thing to do to make yourself as accessible as possible," he says. "Our business community really wants to be accessible."
Guiels and Dodsworth realize there are a lot of costs associated with making older buildings and their architecture more accessible, but say there are smaller things that can be done right away—whether it's a ramp, the way that a door opens, the weight of a door.

"Small changes turn into big ones," says Dodsworth.

Showplace Performance Centre Stage Receives Brand New Flooring
/Over the course of a year, the stage floor at Showplace Performance Centre sees a lot of foot traffic. Performances with a full cast, dance competitions, and stage props and sets being wheeled on and off the stage can really wear out parts of the floor.
Whelan's Flooring Centre graciously stepped up to replace the 18-year-old stage floor, and in return the stage will now be known as the Whelan's Flooring Stage.
Canadian stand-up comedian Ron James—who also has a show there on October 25th & 26th—even dropped by to raise a glass and toast the occasion as well!
We're floored by this news—congrats Showplace!
