2nd Annual Mayor Bennett Giving Gala Raises Over $70,000

On Saturday night, more than 200 members of the Peterborough community gathered for the second annual Mayor Bennett Giving Gala.

This special night raised over $70,000 this year in support of the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, the amazing organization working with and supporting charities throughout the City and County of Peterborough.

"I am delighted with the tremendous support for the Giving Gala," said Mayor Bennett. "Our community members have once again demonstrated their generous and caring spirit, which serves as an important reminder of who we are and what we believe in."

This sold-out event provided guests with an opportunity to connect with many like-minded individuals, companies and organizations who are interested in helping to a build a vibrant and strong Peterborough.

The proceeds from the evening will support the Community Foundation in its mission to improve the lives of people in the City and County through local giving, grant making and community development initiatives.

Don Cherry & Ron Maclean Coming To Peterborough For Hockey Day In Canada

As part of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada releasing their 60th season schedule, it has been announced that Scotiabank Hockey Day In Canada takes place here in Peterborough this year on February 9th.

Don Cherry and Ron Maclean will come to the city for this special day, when all seven Canadian NHL teams will be featured interspersed with community hockey segments.

This will be great exposure for the city across Canada, and its important part of hockey lore in this country.

Canadian Canoe Museum Hosting Free Open House This Sunday

The Canadian Canoe Museum is having an open house this Sunday (January 13th) from noon until 5 p.m.

Come visit the museum and explore the exhibits for free. The Peterborough Model Railroaders and the Lindsay & Region Model Railroaders will also be there.

Deets On The 2013 ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival

ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival takes place this month, from Friday, January 25th to Sunday, January 27th at Showplace Performance Centre, Market Hall and The Venue. The festival includes 63 films from around the world.

A festival pass costs $30 and rush tickets are $8 per film. Ticket passes are now available online, and at Peterborough Green-up, Green Eyewear, Kawartha World Issues Centre, Trent Central Student Association, Fleming Bookstore in Peterborough and Happenstance Books and Yarn in Lakefield.

St. Peter's Secondary School Celebrating Its 100 Anniversary This Year

St. Peter's is celebrating its 100th anniversary in Peterborough this year—the school opened its door at its original location on September 2, 1913 with 59 students. The official anniversary weekend takes place this year on Thanksgiving, October 11th and 12th. Contact St. Peter's with your own memories of the school here, learn more about celebrations here, and view pictures from past yearbooks here. Watch the video below from a history buff who happened to find some abandoned photographs from St. Peter's taken in 1916 and 1920 that will be used as part of the celebrations.

Fleming College is constructing a $36.6 million, 87,000 square foot trades and technology skills training facility at their Sutherland Campus here in Peterborough. Completion of this Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre (KTTC) is scheduled for April 2014, and it will be in full operation by September 2014. Workplace Integration Program Provides Valuable Service In Peterborough

Employers should check out the non-profit Workplace Integration program, which is affiliated with the New Canadians Centre here in Peterborough.

Their mandate is to assist employers in the Peterborough area to attract, hire and retain immigrants, refugees and other newcomers.

They facilitate connections between local professionals who can assist newcomers with informational interviews, mentoring relationships, volunteer placements and work placements. An informational interview is a one-time meeting with one of their clients in which they can ask a professional particular questions related to the field. A mentoring relationship lasts about 4 to 6 months, in which the two parties meet once every 2 or 3 weeks.

As a "mentor", you are not responsible for hiring or finding employment for the client you meet with, but to provide advice and information. More information about the program and being a mentor to a newcomer can be found here.
