Juno award-winning band, The Strumbellas, performed at Peterborough Musicfest in Del Crary Park Wednesday night.

Attendees were happy to welcome them back to Kawarthas, by filling the park and dancing into the night. The Strumbellas did not disappoint. With a high-energy performance they had the crowd singing along to their hits such as “Spirits,” “We Don’t Know,” and “In This Life.”

The evening was concluded with an encore featuring a cover of Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”

Lead singer Jimmy Chauveau described the evening as “all sorts of magic” and that he couldn’t wait to come back.

The Peterborough Peace Council hosted its annual Hiroshima and Nagasaki Commemoration Ceremony at Little Lake on Tuesday evening.

“It’s important to remember exactly what happened,” said Gianne Broughton, a Peterborough Peace Council member.

The commemoration began with Broughton acknowledging the 77th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan by the U.S Military.

Peterborough Peace Council member Sheila Nabigon-Howlett then shared how Canada has not yet signed the UN Nuclear Ban Treaty and called for the end of nuclear tech.

“This is an opportunity to look at the globe and see what is happening. It’s not pretty,” she said.

An open invitation was offered if anyone would like to speak their mind, about the past or about the future. Two speeches were made after an open mic invitation was offered to speak their mind, about the past or about the future, followed by a song.

Peterborough Peace Council and supporters were invited to release paper lanterns into the water after the sun had set. This Japanese custom is a gesture of respect for those who have died and gives participants a moment to think about their ancestors and loved ones.

Peterborough Ex Hosting Events Around The Region This Week In Lieu Of Traditional Exhibition

The Peterborough Ex is holding the annual homecraft, steer show and rabbit and cavy show this weekend at locations throughout the region.

The Steer Show and Sale will be happening at the Vollering farm (295 Douro Fourth Line, Douro Dummer) on Thursday and will feature six animals that will be judged at 6:00 p.m. followed by a BBQ. The award-winning steers will be auctioned off online following the show until August 12.

The Rabbit and Cavy Show will be happening at Kawartha Downs on Friday as part of their Agricultural Fair with judging starting at 3:00 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday the Annual Homecraft Show will be happening at the Peterborough Morrow Building. See award winning displays and shop with local vendors.

“The Peterborough Ex is continuing to renew and regrow to provide agriculture and food education events for Peterborough area residents,” said Viren D’Souza, President of the Peterborough Ag Society. “These are fun events to get up close and learn about agriculture.”

The Peterborough Agricultural Society is continuing to provide opportunities for people to connect with farming and food through educational events that allow for on-farm experiences and engagement with producers.

The 2022 Peterborough Ex will not feature a midway or rodeo.

Registration Open For 2022 Hike For Hospice

Registration is now open for the 20th annual Hike for Hospice event, taking place from September 10 - 16.

After another difficult year with COVID-19 that put strain on every aspect of hospice care in the community including a skyrocketing demand for services, more complicated forms of grief, overstretched human resources and decreased fundraising - Hospice Peterborough asks for the community’s support to make its annual fundraiser Hike for Hospice a great success again this year.

“Hike is our only fundraising event that has continued throughout the pandemic, although it too has had interruptions, and we rely on it to continue helping any Peterborough city and county resident – for absolutely no fees – through their palliative, end-of-life and grief journeys,” said Hajni Hős, Hospice Peterborough executive director. “We thank all of our hard working committee members and our wonderful supporters who continue to invest in our accredited programs and services as well as the community’s wellbeing. We couldn’t do it without you.”

The weeklong event will include opening ceremonies, to premiere on YouTube, with special themes each day, and wrapping up with the virtual closing ceremonies. This will be the third consecutive year that Hike has been held virtually in order to err on the side of caution for the community

Last year’s Hike for Hospice brought in $66,000 and included 16 local teams made up of 133 registered participants

100 per cent of proceeds raised stay in Peterborough. Funds support 25 programs and services including a bereaved parents support group, day hospice, palliative navigation, groups for children and teens and a 10-bed end-of-life residence. Hospice also offers community education events, including workshops and seminars, about issues such as end-of-life care, bereavement or supporting children in grief.

Less than one year since their last appearance in town, the Sam Roberts Band performed at Peterborough Musicfest at Del Crary Park Wednesday night.

Fans packed the park and were ecstatic to see the Sam Roberts Band return since their last appearance in August. The drive-in concert at the Peterborough Memorial Centre was cut short due to a storm.

After so much time without concerts, Sam Roberts told the crowd to “Throw your shame out the window and dance!”

Throughout the evening, the alternative rock band played fan favourites such as “Shapeshifters” and “Brother Down.” Roberts shared stories of playing Peterborough for the first time in 2002 at the since-closed nightclub, Sin City to a single attendee named Kevin.

The Sam Roberts Band marks the first Wednesday concert and third performance for the 2022 Peterborough Musicfest. The New Pornographers is the next act and performing next this Saturday at 8 p.m.

Peterborough Musicfest is a free event hosted every Wednesday and Saturday in Del Crary Park. Concert-goers can bring their lawn chairs or rent them for $4 at the event.

Several Road Closures to Occur During Dragon Boat Festival This Saturday

For the public’s safety, the City of Peterborough has closed several roads at the request of the Peterborough’s Dragon Boat Festival committee with races beginning on Saturday.

Roads such as Crescent Street from George Street to Winch Street from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. are closed on race day.

The streets affected are:

  • Perry Street from the east side of George St. to the west side of Crescent Street.

  • Lake Street from the east side of George St. to the west side of Crescent Street.

  • Lock Street from the north side of Romaine St. to the south side of Crescent Street.

  • Romaine Street from the east side of Lock St. to the west side of Crescent Street.

  • Crescent Street. from the south side of Perry St. to the west side of Winch Street.

  • Rink Street from the east side of George St at the Crary Park Marina entrance.

Eeveryone is welcome to attend Festival at Del Crary Park to spectate and cheer for the participants.

The following is the event schedule for the this year’s races:

  • 8:00 AM - Awakening the Dragon/Opening Ceremonies

  • 9:00 AM - First Race Heats begin

  • 9:00 AM - Vendors Village Market opens with over 40 vendors brought to us from Modern Makers Market including food vendors

25th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show at Lang Pioneer Village Museum Set For June 19

The 25th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show at Lang Pioneer Village Museum will take place June 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local collectors will bring to life some of the oldest antique tractors and steam engines around as they compete for over 20 awards including Best Unique Exhibit, Best Display and Lang Pioneer Village’s Choice.

The tractor games, including lawn tractor races, begin at noon.

Tractor rides will be available, and the museum open as usual.

The day will conclude with a tractor parade through the historic village beginning at 3:15 p.m.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors (60+), $7 for youths (ages 5-14) and free for children under 5. Family admission is also available for $40 and includes 2 adults and up to 4 youths (ages 5-14).

Local Artist Brings Superheroes to Life For Saturday's Inaugural Capable Con

New superheroes came to life as the biggest art project for local artist Mariah Yee as she designed all the characters for the inaugural Capable Con this Saturday.

The free event is held by the Council for Persons with Disabilities (CPD) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the VentureNorth building. A play-on word of the popular event Comic-Con, Capable Con is designed to create open, healthy dialogues about disabilities and accessibility.

Yee created seven characters, each with their own disability and superpower. Each character set took roughly 40 hours of work with all works completed over the span of seven months.

“It was a great opportunity for me to potentially do something with my artwork and do something impactful here in Peterborough,” said Yee, CPD communications coordinator.

CPD volunteers helped create the concept and ideas of the superheroes before Yee made the illustrations for them.

“Some of them were accepted pretty quickly and some of them had to go through some adjustments and that’s just a part of the design process,” said Yee, CPD communications coordinator.

Each superhero is being featured at the event. The following are the characters showcased for Capable Con:

  • Scout and traveller, a hero with vision loss and his guide dog

  • Amanda Auriel, a hero with hearing loss but can read body signals and lips to capture words spoken. She uses a skateboard with her name spelled out in sign language.

  • Power Pals Jordan and Jamie who are on the autism spectrum. They possess the power of hyper-focus, unconventional outlooks, pattern recognition, great memory and recall.

  • Bionica Bot, an amputee gymnast with interchangeable parts for her arm to suit the task at hand.

  • An unnamed hero in a wheelchair.

Yee began drawing at a young age and says art has always been her passion growing up. She keeps bits and pieces of her work as a reminder of doing what she loves.

Yee says she has a sense of pride knowing Peterborough will see her work on a local yet large platform and feels truly connected with the community.

“It still feels very surreal to even look at them and all of Peterborough is going to see those,” she explained. “I know the meaning behind them is worth so much more than words that I can put to them.”

Mariah moved to Peterborough in 2014. She grew up in Big Cedar and has lived in Haliburton and Newmarket. She graduated from Fleming College with a Visual and Creative Arts Diploma and a Certificate in Drawing and Painting.

Douro Reunites For Canada Day Celebrations After Two Year Hiatus

The Township of Douro-Dummer will host their annual Canada Day celebration, after a two year hiatus due to COVID-19, on July 1 at 2:30 p.m.

“After a two-year hiatus we are excited to bring the community back together again to celebrate as a community,” said Julie Chatten, one of the organizers of this year’s event. “We are eager to reconnect with our friends and neighbours.”

The theme for this years celebration is ‘Re-United’.

“Re-United, means so much,” said Councillor Heather Watson, also on the organizing committee. “With so many issues dividing us as a nation and as a community in recent years, Canada Day is a reminder of what it means to be Canadian.”

The parade route begins on the Douro Fourth Line Road at County Road 4 and will head south ending in the Hamlet of Douro at County Road 8. Entries of walkers and floats are asked to assemble at 2:00 p.m. at County Road 4 and Douro Fourth Line Road.

Parade entries are welcome and can take any form but are requested to register.

'100 Days Out' Celebration Planned For Ontario 55+ Summer Games In Peterborough

To celebrate the start of the Peterborough 2022 Ontario 55+ Summer Games in August, A “100 Days Out” celebration will take place on May 2 at the Silver Bean Café.

The event will generate momentum and build excitement for the Games, which take place August 9 to 11 throughout the City and County of Peterborough, as well as promote a call for volunteers who would like to support the Games.

Organized by the Games Organizing Committee, the event will be attended by local dignitaries and PACHI the mascot of the Ontario Games, and include speeches from Mayor Diane Therrien, County Deputy Warden Andy Mitchell, Games Organizing Committee Chair Fred Batley and Downtown Business Improvement Area Executive Director Terry Guiel.

"The Downtown Business Improvement Area is thrilled to be partnering with the City of Peterborough for the Ontario 55+ Summer Games”, said Guiel. “Our historically charming downtown is filled with the kind of unique dining and shopping experiences that the visiting athletes will most certainly enjoy. We can't wait to show off our entertainment district and the vibrant patios this summer. Of course, we are looking forward to the games bringing a much-needed economic boost to our downtown businesses."

The 100 Days Out event will take place from 5 to 6 p.m., on May 2, at the Silver Bean Café, 130 King St., inside Millennium Park, and feature live music performed by local musicians. Refreshments will also be available.
