Local Tennis Players To Play Epic 24 Hour Tennis Marathon In Support Of PRHC Closer Campaign

On July 30th, two local tennis players, Mark Arbogast and Shawn Beatty, will embark on a gruelling 24 hour tennis marathon in support of the PRHC Foundation’s Closer campaign.

Arbogast, a teacher in the Law and Justice program at Fleming College, says the duo will play 24, 50‐ minute sets of doubles against volunteer opponents, taking only a 10‐minute break every hour.

They're looking for pairs or individuals to sign up to play doubles against them at intervals throughout the day and night. The marathon will get underway at 10:00 a.m. on July 30th at the Quaker Park Tennis Club and run straight through until 10:00 a.m. the next day.

In order to raise money, Arbogast and Beatty will collect pledges in advance, with donors able to sponsor them either for a specific period of time, or for the completion of their marathon. All proceeds from the event will support the PRHC Foundation’s Closer campaign to expand cancer care services at our hospital.

To register to play or pledge your support, call Mark Arbogast at 705‐741‐2223 or email 24tennismarathon@gmail.com.

Dave Di Bella To Carry "Remember Flag" At Peterborough Relay For Life Event This Week

The Canadian Cancer Society: Relay For Life is much more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.

This year Relay For Life is embarking on its 10th year here in Peterborough. It takes place June 3rd and 4th from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Rhema Christian School, and the public is invited to come out to the track and watch the relay, and show their support for all the teams participating. It starts Friday evening, and is a 12-hour event. Organizers hope to raise about $200,000.

This year, Peterborough's David Di Bella will be carrying the "Remember Flag" with his kids Kaitlin and Lukas as part of the opening ceremonies Friday evening. Dave's wife Kristen lost her battle with cancer, but Dave and his family are carrying on the fight. They will be on the stage for opening ceremonies, and the announcers will be reading a short note Dave prepared for the event.

PtboPics: The Flaming Hoops At The Venue Wine Bar

It was a special night at The Venue wine bar Friday as former I Mother Earth band members Brian Byrne (vocals) and Christian Tanna (drums) played covers ranging from U2 to Ozzy to Johnny Cash to Led Zeppelin in their cover band The Flaming Hoops (see pics below), which mixes rock with a country twang. Their cover of U2's "Bad" was a highlight of the night. Christian's brother, Jag Tanna, guitarist from I Mother Earth, was also in attendance (Jag resides here in Peterborough). It had been rumoured throughout the day that I Mother Earth was going to reunite to play a set at The Venue, but that didn't happen. Both Jag and Brian told us the band is working on new material, but it remains unclear when they will play again in public. Also in attendance was the Toronto hard rock band Easy Sleezy, who are working on a new album.
