1956-57 Original Petes Team to Be Honoured At Petes 60th Season Opener

The Peterborough Petes are the longest continuously operating team in the Ontario Hockey League—having won nine OHL championships and one Memorial Cup championship over 59 years. The Petes have graduated over 180 players to the National Hockey League.

This Thursday (September 24th), the Petes will host the Ottawa 67’s for the home opener of their 60th season, and members of the original 1956-57 team will be recognized at centre ice before the game as a symbol of the success and longevity of the Petes.

Before the game, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., fans are invited to attend the free Home Opener Kickoff Party in the Northeast Corner of the PMC parking lot. The event will feature live music by Nathan Jackson, face painting by Faces by 2, a selection of bouncy castles by Bouncers Are Us, and a paid BBQ by Brown’s Fine Foods.

Thursday’s game will also be a $5 student night, as Friday is a PA Day for most local students.

Peterborough Huskies Coach Converts Bedroom Into Gear Warehouse For Special Needs Team

The special needs hockey team Peterborough Huskies team continues to grow in popularity—and numbers. In doing so, they have to make room for all the equipment somewhere. 

To create space, Huskies Head Coach Chris J-Boy Williams converted what was once a basement bedroom in his house into a Huskies gear warehouse.

The Huskies team is not only amping up for a new season but team management have already begun planning the International Special Needs hockey tournament they landed. That takes place here in Peterborough in March 2017 and is a major tournament to coordinate, with 75 teams and about 1,500 players coming into town for that.

Toronto Blue Jays Care Foundation Kicks In 100k For Trent Sport Field Project

The new Trent Sport Field project was made official on Tuesday (July 14th) thanks to the announcement of a $100,000 funding infusion from a Field of Dreams Grant from Jays Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Trent Sport Field project is a cooperative project of the City and Trent University, with support from the Peterborough Baseball Association (PBA) and Peterborough Recreational Baseball Association (PRBA).

At a total estimated cost of $1,975,552, the project—which will be located at the corner of Nassau Mills Road and Pioneer Road on the East bank of Trent University—includes the following:

•    A major-sized baseball field including grass infield, 325’ left and right outfields and 400’ centre field, irrigation system, players’ dugouts, pitchers’ bullpen, sports field lighting and outfield fencing;
•    A natural turf rectangular sport field to accommodate rugby, field lacrosse and soccer, meeting the IRB (rugby), FIFA (soccer) and IFL (lacrosse) requirements for field dimensions and including an irrigation system, sports field lighting and safety fencing;
•    Parking and pedestrian walkways.

Funding and financial contributions for the project breakdown are as follows:
City of Peterborough -> $1,438,052
Trent University -> $250,000 and provision of land
Peterborough Baseball Association -> $150,000
Jays Care Foundation -> $100,000
Peterborough Recreational Baseball Association -> $37,500

“We are excited to have partnered with the Peterborough Baseball Association and pleased to provide a $100,000 investment towards the Trent Sport Field project,” says Robert Witchel, executive director of Jays Care Foundation in a media release. “As Canada’s team, we are proud to join Trent University, the City of Peterborough, and multiple baseball associations, and are moved at the prospect of providing 750 youth the opportunity to play the game and benefit from the invaluable life skills that are learned on the baseball diamond.”

**The contractor commenced work this week and the sport fields are expected to be complete by June 2016. Use of the two sport fields should be ready for 2016 sport season.

Field Of Dreams: Peterborough Man Building Epic 18 Hole Disc Golf Course Near Keene

Peterborough's Darrell Bankes is a huge fan of disc golf—aka frisbee golf. So much so that this landscape architect is constructing an 18-hole pay to play course southeast of town near Keene on 38 acres of land he purchased.

When the course is ready, Bankes hopes that disc golf players young and old—and new—will not only come from Peterborough and the Kawarthas but from all over to play, including day trips from the GTA area.

Disc golf, for the uninitiated, is a flying disc game—a precision and accuracy sport, where individual players throw a flying disc at a target. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.

This once counter-culture sport has grown up and is becoming more mainstream cool.

Construction on the 18 hole course, TinLid Disc Golf, started earlier in July. "It's a private pay to play course near, with similar offerings of a ball golf course," Bankes tells PTBOCanada. "The course is still being built—it's not accessible full time yet—but the plan is to have open access in the fall."

The course design—a schematic layout plan made from aerial photos and topographical maps—is evolving daily as Bankes gets used to the property and its nuances, but looks like this..

Like a golf course, there is even a driving range to practise on...

Rather than holes, baskets are used in disc golf...

So if you build it, will they come? Time will tell. But this is a burgeoning sport: there is "massive growth Stateside," Bankes says, not to mention an existing local Peterborough disc golf club to mine from. 

Also, it's affordable, accessible, good casual exercise, easy to learn and much faster to play than golf, he says.

And no tee times.

Bankes has a pro shop being operated out of 302 Park Street north in Peterborough until a shop on the course is built this fall.

Trent University Approved As Site for Peterborough’s New Arena Complex

Trent University and the City of Peterborough have announced plans to build a new arena complex on the East Bank of Trent’s Symons Campus, following a unanimous vote at City Council.

The new arena development—which will be located at the intersection of Nassau Mills Road and Pioneer Road—will provide innovative sports and recreation opportunities and facilities.

It will complement the surrounding Trent Nature Areas and access to the Otonabee River, and will serve as an important step forward in the economic and social development of the north end of Peterborough.

“A new twin-pad community arena in the city’s north end, next to Trent University, will improve access to sport-and-recreation opportunities in our community, benefiting the health and well-being of the city’s residents,” says Mayor Daryl Bennett. “We’re thrilled that Trent is supporting this project, which provides the land and potential for the development of a regional sports complex.”
 
***The University will deed 22-24 acres of land to the City of Peterborough for the construction of the complex, which will fulfill the City’s need to replace the existing Northcrest Arena and will increase the amount of ice time available to the community.

OHL's Peterborough Petes Looking For Billet Families

The Peterborough Petes are inviting local families to submit applications to become a billet family for the 2015/16 season. Billet families provide a home away from home for Petes players and help maintain the standards and expectations players are held to at the rink, at school, in the community, and at home.

Billet families are responsible for providing the following...

 -> A clean, smoke-free, welcoming home that a player will feel comfortable in
-> A private room with a bed and good mattress
-> A private desk/workspace for homework
-> Nutritious meals and snacks
-> Support of team rule enforcement, including curfew, community engagement, academic standards, etc.

***Families will receive the following as compensation:
•Two (2) regular bowl season tickets
•Room and board ($85 per week, per player)
•Invitations to exclusive team events

The official song for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games is "Together We Are One". It's performed by Platinum recording artist—and the pride of Millbrook—Serena Ryder.

In addition to radio play, "Together We Are One" will be featured in much of the promotion for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games, and will be used to close the event in a live performance by Ryder at the closing ceremonies. It will also be heard at torch relays, the Athletes' Village and even as the score to a nightly fireworks display at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto.
