Petes Snap Winning Streak With Dominant Play From the Windsor Spitfires In 5-2 Loss

The visiting Windsor Spitfires leave town with a win over the Petes, snapping the hometown team’s winning streak with a 5-2 loss at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Windsor had a one-man show during the first period as Jacob Maillet went coast-to-coast and scored 5:32 into the frame for a 1-0 lead. He was not done as late in the period, Maillet corralled a loose puck off a Konnor Smith hit and backhanded it in for a 2-0 Windsor lead at the end of the first.

Peterborough was able to counter in to kick off the second period, and the Petes could sustain pressure in the offensive zone. They were rewarded with a one-timer goal from Owen Beck to Donovan McCoy, keeping their hot streak going and cutting the deficit to one. Beck made another big play, stick-lifting a Spitfire and turning the puck over. Tommy Purdeller got the loose puck and in transition, passed it to Beck for the one-timer and the game was tied at two.

The Petes were on a power play five minutes later but it became a turning point in favour of the Spitfires. After Windsor cleared the zone with a flip dump, Cole Davis won the race to get the puck in the Petes zone and beat Zack Bowen five-hole for a shorthanded goal and a 3-2 lead after two.

Windsor kept their foot on the gas in the third period as there was nifty movement from Davis and he drop-passed it for Valentin Zhugin, corralling the puck from the backhand. The latter got the puck under control and snapped it past Bowen for a 4-2 lead with under six minutes left in the game. The Petes had a power play with just over two minutes in regulation but the Spitfires deposited an empty-net goal and won 5-2 over Peterborough.

The Petes are getting little rest between games as they are back in action on the road to place the Mississauga Steelheads for 7 p.m. at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre. Fans can attend the Official Road Game Watch Party at Shoeless Joe’s Peterborough.

Peterborough Lakers Introduce Head Coach Mike Hasen As New General Manager; Former GM Paul Day Retires From Team

Peterborough Century 21 Lakers head coach Mike Hasen has been introduced as the team’s new general manager as Paul Day has stepped down from the role, retiring from the club.

The announcement was made at the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame in the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Wednesday afternoon.

Hasen has served as head coach of the Lakers since being introduced in 2015. During that time, Paul Day was named general manager. The duo had won four consecutive Mann Cup championships, five Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) titles and made seven finals appearances with the Lakers during that span.

“He's been a mentor and a friend to me on so many levels to allow me to be where I am today,” explained Hasen. “I've learned a lot and Paul may not be here on a daily basis but I know I'm going to be on the phone with him a lot.”

Paul Day (left) served as the team’s general manager since 2015. He also serves as general manager and head coach of the Phildelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

Hasen will be busy in his new role as the team must submit a protected players list and plan for the upcoming MSL draft at a pending date.

Last season, the Six Nations Chiefs swept the Lakers in the MSL Championship, stopping Peterborough’s quest for their ‘Drive For Five’ campaign to win five straight Mann Cup Championships.

Hasen has championship aspirations as he wants to bring another Mann Cup back to Peterborough after last year’s season being a ‘disappointment.’

“We were disappointed with the way our season ended and Six Nations is very good,” he explained. “They're the Mann Cup champs for a reason. I think it reminded us what we need to do on floor and maybe a bit off floor to get back to their level.”

The new general manager noted that changes would be made to make the Lakers a championship team and identified what needed to be done to bring Peterborough another Mann Cup title.

“Last season, we did lose a good chunk of quality and experienced players and one of the messages we were trying to leave with those guys is that 'it's your guys' turn.'“ said Hasen. “I think having that year of not relying on the Mark Mattews or Shawn Evans gives them more experience to step up. Where the season ended, it cemented where we need to improve as players, as staff and I think at the end of the day, that experience will hopefully carry us forward.”

The Petes were on a three-game road trip in three consecutive games in three days. When Peterborough played North Bay on Thursday, McCoy had the overtime winner to earn first-star honours as the Petes defeated the Battalion 6-5.

McCoy found the scoresheet again, getting a pair of assists in a 7-4 win over the Sudbury Wolves on Friday.

The captain closed out the week with a goal and three assists including his second overtime winner on Sunday to give Peterborough a 6-5 win after being down 5-0 after the first period against the Oshawa Generals.

The 19-year-old Belleville native recorded 14 points (three goals and 11 assists) through 19 games, helping the Petes lead the East Division with a 12-3-3-1 record. McCoy was Peterborough’s first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the Quinte Red Devils U16 program. In 145 regular season games, he has five goals, 38 assists and 43 points. Following his 10-point (2-8-10) playoff campaign becoming an OHL champion last season, McCoy attended training camp with the Calgary Flames as a free agent invite.

Petes Rally From Five-Goal Deficit to Defeat Rival Oshawa Generals 6-5 in Overtime; Owen Beck Scores Hat Trick In Comeback

Owen Back helped the Peterborough Petes rally a huge comeback with a hat trick to defeat the Oshawa Generals 6-5 in overtime after overcoming a five-goal deficit at the Tribute Communities Centre on Sunday night.

The Petes had arguably their worst period of the season in the first, allowing five consecutive goals from the Generals. Beckett Sennecke scored the first two in 1:26 of the game, Calum Ritchie sniped one past Liam Sztuska and Rasmus Kumpulainen had back-to-back goals for Oshawa — including a power play goal — to cap off a five-goal period for the Generals heading into the second.

The Petes subbed in Zach Bowen in relief of Sztuska to start the second period. Peterborough broke the shutout as Beck rifled one from the point to make it 5-1. Peterborough got on the power play minutes later and Beck one-timed it from outside the faceoff circle near the point to make it 5-2. Peterborough kept up the pressure as seconds after a Petes power play expired, Samuel Mayer cross-ice pass to Jax Dubois, who buried a one-timer in front of the net, beating Generals goaltender Jacob Oster for a 5-3 game.

The Petes leaned on Beck again to close the gap. Donovan McCoy saw his point shot get saved but Beck got the rebound and sniped it home for a hat trick on the power play, giving the Petes a one-goal deficit. Peterborough forced a turnover in the defensive zone and started a rush into the Generals’s zone. Samuel Mayer got a pass in the neutral zone, took it past the blue line and slapped it past Oster to tie the game up.

In overtime, the Generals were in the offensive zone but Dylan Roobroeck broke his stick on a shot attempt and turned the puck over. While he was getting a new twig, the Petes had an odd-man rush with Beck and McCoy. The latter opted for a wraparound attempt but was stopped by an Oshawa defender. McCoy’s second attempt went in and Peterborough escaped Oshawa with a win.

The win capped off three straight wins in consecutive days to mark the perfect road trip, beating North Bay and Sudbury prior to Oshawa. Peterborough scored 19 goals during that three-game span.

The Petes return home at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday in a showdown against the Windsor Spitfires. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Petes Captain Donovan McCoy Scores Walk-Off Overtime Goal In 6-5 Win Over North Bay

Petes captain Donovan McCoy gave Peterborough a a great start to their three-game road trip with a walk-off overtime goal to beat the North Bay Battalion 6-5 at the North Bay Memorial Gardens on Thursday night.

North Bay struck first as Anthony Romani hit a one-timer from the slot, beating Liam Sztuska for a 1-0 lead 3:04 into the game. Peterborough received a power play seconds later and capitalized as Johnathan Melee snapped a one-timer from outside the faceoff circle to tie it at one apiece. Less than three minutes later, Peterborough off the rush, saw Braydon McCallum making a drop pass to Owen Beck and the Montréal Canadiens prospect sniped it for a 2-1 lead. North Bay, not to be outdone, Romani tied the game up, writing a shot outside the faceoff circle for a 2-2 tie going into the second.

Peterborough had their turn to strike quickly in a period with a power play chance. Beck found Chase Lefebvre alone in front of the net. The latter was stopped the first time but Sam McCue charged in to pick up the loose change and bury it for a 3-2 Petes lead. Peterborough kept scoring in bunches as Cam Gauvreau launched a point shot and was tipped but Brody Partridge for a 4-2 lead.

However, in 36 seconds, North Bay rang off two goals in back-to-back power plays (including a two-man advantage) from Ty Nelson and a Romani hat trick to tie it up going into the third.

Scoring slowed down in the third period as each team scored once. Ethan Procyszyn and McCue scored respectively for their teams and the game went to overtime.

Captain McCoy took the extra frame into his own hands as he stickhandled through two defenders and beat Dom DiVincentiis on the backhand to send Peterborough home with two points for the 6-5 overtime win.

The Petes continue their road trip against the Sudbury Wolves on Friday with puck drop 7:05 p.m. at Sudbury Community Arena. Shoeless Joe’s is hosting the Official Road Game Watch Party at Shoeless Joe’s Peterborough.
