The Community Opportunity & Innovation Network (COIN) is celebrating its 20th year of pioneering in the social economy! On September 18th, 2013, at 5 p.m., COIN will host a celebration at its new co-working office space at 120 Murray Street in downtown Peterborough. The event will host previous and current board members, staff and clients as well as community leaders, partners, and friends of COIN.

COIN would like to extend an invitation to YOU! Come check out the silent auction, enter to win some great draw prizes, and find out what our social enterprises are up to. You can even check out the next event in the Peterborough Innovation Talks series at historic Market Hall the following night at 7 pm.

COIN is a non-profit community economic development agency, United Way member and partner of the Canadian CED Network. It was formed in 1993 to address Peterborough’s lack of job opportunities for people with barriers to employment.

What is COIN Postcard 2.0-01.jpg

In the past 20 years, COIN has achieved a lot worth celebrating, including creating hundreds of new job opportunities for unemployed community members, partnering to generate new economic activity and investment, and the development of dozens of enterprises.

It currently operates four social enterprises: Peterborough Eats, reBOOT Peterborough, TekDesk and an exciting new co-working space in its pilot phase.  Social enterprise may be nothing new but COIN’s years of experience demonstrate the imperative for constant reinvention to stay relevant and have impact.

Fleming College students will officially participate in Shinerama for the first time on Saturday, September 7th. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, students from the Sutherland Campus will be canvassing at FreshCo on Lansdowne Street while Frost students will be at the Loblaws in Lindsay.

About 100 students from both campuses are expected to participate in collecting donations for Shinerama. Canvassers are encouraged to shine shoes, wash cars and even buff hockey skates—anything fun that can raise money in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

All funds collected at Shinerama go to support finding a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF), which is a fatal genetic disease affecting children and young adults. There is no cure for CF, which primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.

According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Shinerama is the largest postsecondary fundraiser in Canada. In 2012, Shinerama raised $1,035,000. Shinerama has raised more than $21.5 million since it first started more than 45 years ago.

'It’s A Small World' Fundraiser For Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation

Screen shot 2013-08-14 at 2.30.39 PM.png

The Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation, the foundation that supports your local family health team, is a little “short” on funds.

You can help them raise money by joining hosts Erica Cherney and Dr. Tom Phillips at a unique event that celebrates all the good things that come in small packages — including small business, short fiction, compact cars and, yes, a darn good haiku!

"It’s a Small World" will be held at Le Petit Bar in downtown Peterborough on Sunday, September 15th.

Tom and I decided it was time to put our height to good use and have a charity event to celebrate people who are smaller....less than 5 feet, 2 inches,” says Erica Cherney, who is co-hosting the event with Dr. Tom Phillips. “Being not so-tall needs to be celebrated. We hope people of all heights will join us, even tall people. It’s a great chance for them to see how the other half lives!”

"It’s a Small World" takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on September 15th. The first 30 ticket holders will have their choice of which sitting they wish to attend. Guests can enjoy a short stay that includes a wee bit of wine, finger foods, merry-making and other entertainment.

Proceeds from the event will help to fund hearing-amplified headphones for use by family health team doctors in long-term care homes in the City and County of Peterborough.

Tickets are available for $50 online at smallworld2013.eventbrite.ca or at Cherney Realty, 171 King St., Peterborough.

For more information on the event, call Erica Cherney at 705-876-1717, Dr. Tom Phillips at 705-748-1011 Ext 7009, or the Foundation office at 705-740-8074.

Peterborough Chapter Of Canada World Youth Looking For Host Families

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 12.44.09 PM.png

Canada World Youth is currently looking for people interested in hosting a Canadian and a Ukrainian youth who are participating in their Youth Leaders in Action Women’s Exchange.

Peterborough has been selected to host a group of 18 youth, aged 17 to 21, for three months from December 2013 to February 2014. Half the group will be made up of young women who come from all regions of Canada, and the other half are young women from Ukraine. During their stay in Peterborough, the youth will take part in various projects in the community, volunteering with nine local organizations.

You can get involved by becoming a host! All types of households—retirees, singles, single parents, same sex, and nuclear families—are invited to share their daily activities with CWY Volunteers. You won’t have to alter your lifestyle in any way: one goal of the program is to integrate volunteers into everyday family life.

One spare room and a willingness to share your home is all that is required. Why host? Experience your community through new eyes, introduce your children to a different world perspective, make new friends, exchange ideas and gain new insights, while making a huge difference in the lives and education of 2 young people.

Hosts receive a monthly allowance of $720. For more info, these is a session at Sadlier House on Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. where you can meet past host families, alumni and learn how you can be involved.

For more info, contact Tricia Sharpe, Project Supervisor, by email or phone 705-917-0548.

East City Boy Jonathan Bulman Raising Money For Clean Water Charity

JonoLemonade.jpg

Jonathan Bulman is 6 years old and lives in Peterborough's East City. His goal this summer is to help make a difference for those around the world that don't have access to clean water. His journey began after conversations with his parents about helping to save water where he can (like when he's brushing his teeth) because not everyone can simply turn on the tap and have clean, ever flowing water. This was a real eye opener for Jonathan and he wanted to do his part to help, so he connected with Charity Water, a non-profit organization that aids in bringing clean, safe drinking water to developing countries. You'll find him fundraising at 286 Mark Street, serving up lemonade along with apples or freezies. His hours come and go based on weather and such, but he'll be running his fundraising drive until mid-September. Head over to Mark Street and donate to his cause. Be sure to ask him about his story and he'll be more than happy to share it. For more information, you can follow him on Twitter or donate online at Jono's Journey
