Petes Star Player Nick Ritchie Has Been Traded To Soo Greyhounds

Nick Ritchie, star player of the Peterborough Petes, has been traded away. Ritchie, fresh off winning a Gold Medal with the Canadian World Junior team over Russia, was dealt along with Petes captain Connor Boland to the Soo Greyhounds—a deep team who are making a Memorial Cup run this year. Ritchie, a prospect of the Anaheim Ducks, has 32 points in 25 games with the Petes this year. In exchange, the Petes will receive defenceman Kyle Jenkins, Plymouth’s 2nd round pick in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection, Sault Ste. Marie’s 3rd round pick in 2017, and the Greyounds’ 2nd round pick in both 2019 and 2020. With the Petes in last place in the East Division and showing no signs of making a playoff run, they appear to be in rebuilding mode again.

UPDATED: Peterborough House Cat Named Chester Is Missing In This Extreme Cold

UPDATE, January 9th: It's a miracle! After several reported sightings over the week, Chester is now home safe, his jubilant owner reports on Facebook!

ORIGINAL POST

It's one week today (January 7th) since an adorable orange cat named Chester went missing from his home. He is a 4-year-old Tabby/Maine Coon mix.

Chester is normally a indoor cat so the outside world is foreign to him. He is a male and is fixed. He went missing from the Sherbrooke Street Clonsilla Ave area between Sherbrooke Street and Westmount Pharmacy.

His owners really miss him and are worried sick that he is outside in the cold. Please call Debra at 705.748.5604 if you know his whereabouts.

Environment Canada Issues Extreme Cold Alert For Peterborough Area

A cold front will cross Southern Ontario tonight and Wednesday morning. Very cold temperatures in the wake of this front, combined with strong northerly winds, will result in wind chill values near or below minus 30 Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night.

While anyone who isn't dressed warmly is at risk in cold weather conditions, some are at greater risk than others for frost bite and hypothermia:

- homeless people
- outdoor workers
- people living in homes that are poorly insulated (with no heat or no power)
- people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy and diseases affecting the blood vessels, people taking certain medications including beta-blockers
- winter sport enthusiasts
- people who consume excess alcohol
- infants
- seniors

Wear appropriate clothing:

- Always wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Synthetic and wool fabrics provide better insulation. Some synthetic fabrics are designed to keep perspiration away from your body which keep you dry and further reduce your risk.
- Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer. You can remove layers if you get too warm (before you start sweating) or add a layer if you get cold.
- Wear warm socks, gloves, a hat and scarf in cold weather. Be sure to cover your nose to protect it.
- If you get wet, change into dry clothing as soon as possible. You lose heat faster when you're wet.
