Would It Curb Your Enthusiasm If City of Peterborough Banned Parking On Front Lawns?

It's a possible bylaw that everyone in Peterborough is talking about: should people be allowed to park their vehicles on their front lawn?

Peterborough city council is considering such a bylaw in the coming months—only after public input—that could make parking on front lawns illegal in the city.

Some people just don't always have room on their driveway for their vehicles—or have guests with cars—and choose to park one or two on the lawn to make room.

Other municipalities have similar bylaws to the one Peterborough council is considering.

So what do you think? Do you think people should be ticketed for parking on their front lawn? Or would it curb your enthusiasm if such a bylaw were implemented? Tell us on Facebook.

"Murphy's Law" Documentary World Premiere Screening At Showplace June 18th

UPDATE (April 13th): Watch the awesome trailer just released for Murphy's Law...

----------------

ORIGINAL POST

"A girl broken, her dead parents, a lost and found journal, a 40 year old bicycle, Ireland, some Guinness and hopefully, a little redemption."

That is the premise of Murphy's Law, a new documentary with a world of potential, screening at Showplace June 18th by Peterborough-based radio personality/actress/comedian—and now filmmaker—Megan Murphy.

Still from Murphy's Law

Still from Murphy's Law

In this much anticipated doc, Megan is sharing her story about retracing her late Dad's bike trip in Ireland in 1973—and learning more about herself in this journey of self-discovery.

Megan tells PTBOCanada there is something really special about showing this doc in her hometown, in this community that's been so supportive of her:

"I'm nervous and excited and incredibly humbled to premiere my film in my hometown," she says. "They say it takes a village to raise a child. Peterborough is my village. I am her child. I hope I make her proud!"

Murphy's Law screens, appropriately, on Father's Day weekend—on Saturday, June 18th at 7 p.m. at Showplace. Megan will be doing a Q & A after the doc with audience members.

Downtown Peterborough To Have Free Outdoor Wi-Fi

**UPDATE (June 21st)** Free outdoor Wi-Fi is still definitely happening in downtown Peterborough but its launch has been delayed, the DBIA tells PTBOCanada. No specific launch date is given, but they're aiming for July.

Awesome news for Downtown Peterborough as free outdoor Wi-Fi is coming to the downtown core later this spring, likely in May.

"Wi-Fi and smartphones are becoming integral to the way people shop, dine, work, live and enjoy a night out," says DBIA Communications Manager Joel Wiebe. "Downtown continues to offer a rewarding local experience and modernizing with free Wi-Fi will add to that experience."

The free Wi-Fi will cover much of the main commercial area downtown with potential to expand it if it's a success.

"Wi-Fi is one more way for us to show value to our members and make downtown more competitive," adds DBIA Executive Director Terry Guiel.

This exciting venture is a partnership between the DBIA, Community Futures Development Corporation, Peterborough Utilities Group, Peterborough and the Kawarthas Tourism, the City of Peterborough and other potential partners.

The Wi-Fi will be similar to most free networks in that you'll have to hit "agree" on a landing page but you won't need to have a password.

After you sign in, your can tweet and instagram away about our beautiful downtown!

The theme for 2016 World Water Day is “Water & Jobs”. As Wayne Stiver, Vice-President, Water Utility Services, Peterborough Utilities Group, explains, “With the pending retirement of many professionals in the water and wastewater industries over the next few years, it is imperative to bring young and talented people into this challenging and very rewarding profession. The struggle for safe drinking water in the city of Flint, Michigan reminds us all of the importance quality drinking water plays in the health of our children and our community.”

Meredith Carter, Manager of the Watershed Management Program at Otonabee Conservation, adds, “From source to tap, water management is critical to maintaining good quality drinking water, adequate supplies of water and to sustaining the environmental and economic vitality of the Peterborough region.”

The World Water Day Open House is free for the public to attend. The Water Treatment Plant will open at 4 p.m. and offer tours every 30 minutes until the event wraps up at 6 p.m. A variety of local water related agencies and organizations will feature exhibits about their work.

The Water Treatment Plant is located at 1230 Water Street North, Peterborough (on the grounds of the Riverview Park and Zoo).

6th Annual 24h Music Project Is March 19th At The Red Dog

The 6th Annual 24h Music Project is coming up March 19th. Over the past 5 years, more than 100 local musicians have taken part. This year's project is no different with over half of the 30 participating musicians being first timers.

The project allows musicians from town to play with and get to know other artists that they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to work together with. It brings together musicians from various styles and challenges each to play a style that they normally might not play.

The structure of the project is as follows...

• At 9 p.m. on March 18th, 10 songwriters gather together. They are randomly paired off and have until 8 a.m. the next morning to write a 20 minute original set. This year's writers include Beau Dixon, Michael Bell, Kayla Howran, Sara Decarlo, Kate LeDuece, Nick Ferrio, Rob Wilkes, Dave Robertson, Kelly McMichael and Rob Swales.

• At 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 19th, the five pairs of writers gather again and draft their bands from a list of 20 other participating musicians. What results is five new 6-piece bands.

• At 9 a.m., the 20 participating musicians show up, have breakfast courtesy of Black Honey, find out what band they are in and head off to one of five rehearsal spaces around town. The bands then get together for lunch at Rare, and rehearse again for the afternoon.

• 24 hours after the writers got together, the show goes on. The performances start at 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th at The Historic Red Dog.

Local band Television Rd will be headlining the evening. It is only $10 entry fee and always proves to be a fun night and a wonderful celebration of our community.
