A Sulawesi Forest Turtle Hatched At Riverview Park & Zoo

The Riverview Park & Zoo's latest addition is a recently hatched Sulawesi forest turtle.

This was an exciting announcement for the zoo as it is only their second successful hatching (and they think only the second in Canada) of this critically-endangered species.

Awesome: The Peterborough Petes Lend Practice Jerseys To Special Needs Team

The Peterborough Huskies special needs hockey team is rebranding as Electric City Maroon & White to start fresh—love the name!—but their new jerseys aren't available yet. So in an awesome gesture, the Peterborough Petes organization are lending the team their practice jerseys to use in the interim. Here are photos from Friday (November 11th) by Eileen Kimmett of the happy players practising at the Kinsmen Arena in their Petes jerseys...

"The excitement from the players when they received their Petes jerseys was incredible, and it continued into the dressing room and onto the ice," Coach Williams tells PTBOCanada. "With the announcement of the new name combined with the borrowed Petes Jerseys, it feels like a brand new team and a new beginning for all of us."

Peterborough County Cattlemen Give Back Bigtime To The Community

Peterborough County Cattlemen presented a $3,760 cheque to the Peterborough County Agricultural Raise the Barn: Heritage Building at Lang Century Village and $1,320 to the Millbrook Cavan Firefighters Association.

The funds were raised at the Cattlemen's 35th Annual Beef BBQ that was held at the Robson Family farm in Cavan Monaghan Township this past summer. The event was made possible through the volunteer work of Peterborough County Cattlemen and their families, 4-H youth and Millbrook Cavan firefighters.

Under the leadership of BBQ Fundraising Chair Mike Telford, the Cattlemen have raised over $25,000 for worthy causes over the last five years. This year, approximately 100 community businesses contributed to the auction.

Each year, part of the proceeds of the fundraiser go the fire-fighter associations in the township in which the BBQ is held. “As a firefighter, I know that local fire departments do not always have the important extras they need to do their job and to support the community,” says Mike Telford. Cavan Monaghan Fire Services Association President Adam Goyne adds: “We were surprised and grateful to receive this money from the Cattlemen.”

Peterborough Cattlemen President Larry Jinkerson and BBQ Fundraising Chair Mike Telford presented a cheque for $3,760 to Peterborough County Warden J. Murray Jones on November 10th at Lang Century Village. The Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building, which will open in 2017, will celebrate the history of agriculture in this region.

The building itself will be built to honour the traditions established 200 years ago. “Peterborough Cattlemen are pleased to support the Raise the Barn initiative which will showcase the agricultural history of Peterborough County," says Larry Jinkerson. "Cattle have been a major part of the local agricultural scene since this area was first settled.”

The Inside Story Of The 1916 Quaker Fire Released

A massive explosion and resulting fire levels the Quaker Oats plant in Peterborough, Ontario. In the wake of the disaster, 22 workers are dead—two more would later die as a result of their injuries—with the total damage set at a then unfathomable $2,250,000, not including an estimated $225,000 damage to neighbouring structures.

As the Peterborough community rallies around shattered families and contemplates a possible future without the plant at its center, Quaker officials arrive from Chicago to survey the devastation firsthand, lend their assistance and investigate the opportunity to rebuild the plant.

Featuring a gripping you-are-there narrative as well as numerous archival photographs and newspaper clippings, A Dark Day In Peterborough: A Time To Remember December 11, 1916, is the most comprehensive account of the Quaker explosion and fire, and its aftermath, yet published.

Researched over a 12-year period and written by local historian Gord Young with the assistance of several Lakefield Heritage Research volunteers, its 200-plus pages recount a dark period in Peterborough’s history, the tragedy’s effects on the many the disaster touched and investigates the many theories as to what caused the explosion.

A Dark Day In Peterborough: A Time To Remember December 11, 1916 will be launched Friday, November 18th, at 1 p.m., at the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce boardroom, 175 George Street North, and author Gord Young will be there.

A Dark Day In Peterborough: A Time To Remember December 11, 1916 is available for purchase for $30 at Chapters, 873 Lansdowne Street West; the Canadian Canoe Museum, 910 Monaghan Road; Sullivan’s Pharmacy, 71 Hunter Street East; Trent Valley Archives, 567 Carnegie Avenue; in Lakefield at Happenstance Books and Yarns, 44 Queen Street and Lakefield IDA Pharmacy, 32 Queen Street; and in Selwyn at Craftworks at The Barn, 124 Lindsay Road.
