Search & Rescue Team From CFB Trenton Lands In Farmer's Field To Pick Up Food From Muddy's Pit BBQ

It was one of those amazing Canadian moments when a Search and Rescue Team out of Canadian Forces Base Trenton landed in a farmer's field on Thursday (April 13th) so they could grab food from Muddy's Pit BBQ near Peterborough.

The helicopter landed with permission next to Muddy's—which just re-opened for the season—in Keene so they could enjoy some authentic Southern style food (Muddy's specializes in ribs, brisket and pulled pork).

Here's the crew outside Muddy's...

Muddy's had a great sense of humour and adventure about the whole thing, posting this tweet...

Muddy's also posted the footage of the helicopter landing on their Facebook page and it's getting thousands and thousands of views...

If you haven't tried it, make sure to drop by this Spring and see why even helicopters land to pick up food from there...

Peterborough's Katriona Dean Wins Canada 150 Artist Competition At Lansdowne Place Mall

In celebration of Canada 150, Lansdowne Place and other 20VIC properties across Canada announced a “Call to Artists” in January. In search of an art installation that would reflect Canada’s past, present and/or future, they invited local Canadian artists to create a rendering of a one-of-a-kind installation that, if selected, could be displayed in Centre Court during the month of May and used as a backdrop for their upcoming Canada 150 "Faces of Canada" photo contest.

Out of all the great submissions received, Lansdowne Place has announced that Katriona Dean will be the mall's Canada 150 artist.

“I believe that art unites us,” says Katriona. "It brings people together and breaks down barriers. After seeing the Lansdowne Place call for artists, I was compelled to reach out via social media to ask friends and family what they enjoyed most about Canada. The responses were overwhelmingly aligned: 'diversity' and the 'freedom to be oneself'.

With that feedback at the forefront of my mind, I was inspired to create a sculpture that would provide an array of elements from which passersby could choose a unique backdrop for their selfie, ensuring vast and unique entries for the Canada 150 photo contest.”

Katriona adds: “My recent drive across Canada also gave me a unique and up-close perspective of new and inspiring culture experiences, exposure to the vast Canadian landscapes, and intimate contact with wildlife in their natural habitats. These experiences compelled me to create an entry for the Lansdowne Place’s Canada 150 Art Contest for a chance to showcase Canada in my hometown of Peterborough.”

Lansdowne Place invites the public to join them on Monday, May 1st at 11 a.m., as Katriona unveils her art installation to the community and Lansdowne Place officially begins the Canada 150 festivities with the launch of their Canada 150 “Faces of Canada” Selfie Contest. They'll be celebrating the completion of Katriona’s work by serving up the Canadian favourites you know and love—poutines, Canadian Maple donuts and more!

Miracle Turtle Babies: How 8 Hatchlings Were Born In Peterborough

Peterborough-based Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre posted this extraordinary, beautiful story on their Facebook page about hatchlings born from a Blanding's turtle. The post is getting hundreds of shares for good reason. Here it is re-posted below, along with the photos from their Facebook page post:

"One of our recovering Blanding's turtles has a story to tell... She was hit by a car in June, 2016 and brought in by a biologist from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry who is doing a study on Blanding's turtles. This Blanding's is doing well and will be released sometime this year."

"She had a clutch of eggs that was harvested and incubated from June to August, resulting in 7 healthy hatchlings."

"What is more surprising is that on January 17th, one of our volunteers found that she had laid another ten eggs in the water!! They were quickly gathered and put into an incubator. Much to our surprise, in March, eight of the eggs hatched!"

"How is this possible? Female Blanding's turtles can store sperm for years! Males and females don't hang out all that much, so the gals get what they need and take it with them. True story."

This shows the difference in size between the hatchlings from her first clutch (on the left) and those from her second clutch (on the right).

You can see the hatchlings as they are part of a public access viewing area at the Ontario Turtle Conversation Centre. "Like" their Facebook page here.
