Peterborough Youth Pays It Forward With Teddy Bear Donation to Fire Department

Hunter Nelson, 4, made a special delivery of teddy bears to the Peterborough Fire Department on Monday.

He brought the teddy bears for firefighters to keep in their trucks, in case young children involved in emergencies need them for comfort.

When Hunter was just four months old his family had to make a difficult phone call to 911.

Born prematurely, Hunter had under-developed lungs and needed to sleep with an oxygen monitor. A few weeks after he was home from the hospital the monitor went off while he was napping.

“I went in and found him unresponsive and blue, so we had to call 911. Fire was first on scene and they swooped him away and got right to work,” said Kate McEwen, Hunters mom. “I had two young daughters at home, 2 and 3 at the time, two fire fighters came in and gave them teddy bears. It really made a big difference that those fire fighters stayed with them and talked with them and they had the teddy bears to distract them from the chaos.”

Now, every year on Hunter’s birthday, the family tries to give back. Sometimes to the NICU at the hospital and sometimes to the fire department.

This year Hunter saved his money and friends and family donated some, and together they donated 18 teddy bears to the fire station.

When he and his family made the delivery Hunter got to say hi to the same men that were on scene when he was four months old, and tour the fire hall while wearing his fire gear.

“He wants to be a firefighter when he’s older, that’s been strong now for a couple years,” said McEwen. “He’s very passionate about that.”

She says while Hunter doesn’t remember the day the firefighters came he knows what they did, and what the teddy bears given to his older sisters mean to them.

“I know lot’s of families go through stuff like this, this was just our way of giving back because we know what that feels like.”

Canoe Museum is Seeking Donations to Help Move Their Collection

As the Canadian Canoe Museum prepares to move locations they are seeking the publics help in moving more than 600 canoes and kayaks, along with hundreds of paddles and artifacts.

On Monday, the museum launched their public fundraising campaign.

Before the move begins, every vessel and artifact requires detailed cleaning, documentation, stabilizing, packaging, transportation, a quarantine and inspection process and installation in the new museum.

The museum is asking the community to donate to help cover the cost of the rigorous process of moving.

They have highlighted four different levels of contribution.

The Great Portage contribution ($5,000) supports the transfer of the largest vessels cared for in the Museum’s collection (ranging from 25’ to 53’ long). This group of watercraft range from great cedar dugouts representing First Nations of the Pacific Northwest region to 15-person flatwater sprint “war canoes” used by racing clubs, to enormous Fur Trade era canoes.

The Big Lift contribution ($2,500) supports the transfer of the Museum’s large-sized canoes and kayaks from across Canada and around the world (measuring from 18 to 25 feet in length).

The Solo Carry contribution ($1,000) supports the transfer of the largest cohort of canoes and kayaks represented in the Museum’s collection (measuring up to 18” in length).

The Paddle & Pack contribution ($100-$500) supports the transfer of more than 500 paddles and other related equipment like canoe and kayak-making tools, food harvesting equipment, expedition gear used over centuries and canoe sailing gear.

Apsley Couple Find TikTok Fame With Their Sweet Shop Tastely Box

James and Polly Laneville opened Tastely Box, a candy shop that offers curated boxes of sweets from around the world, in April. What started as a small online shop has burst into a brick and mortar store and over 300k TikTok followers.

Polly used to make ‘date night’ boxes for her and her husband with treats she could find from around the world.

“He was like hey this is a really good idea, I think people would like this,” she said. “We always knew we wanted to go into business together we just weren’t entirely sure with what.”

Polly says their idea kept getting pushed back, but when the pandemic hit they found themselves with more time on their hands.

“We were busy with kids, parents, normal work life - but when the pandemic hit it just gave us a second to step back and look at the whole big picture,” said Polly Laneville. “We decided let’s just dive in and see what happens.”

What started as a side hustle has quickly become a full time job for the pair.

Now the store curates themed boxes of candy from all around the world. Themed boxes include Japanese, Mexican, British, U.S.A and Canadian. They also offer themes like ‘Peanut Butter Lover’, ‘Pucker Up Sour’ and ‘Chocoholic’.

“We had some videos going viral, but they weren’t enough to really grab peoples attention,” said Laneville.

After posting a 25 second video introducing their brand to Canada they ‘blew up’ in the TikTok world.

“It slowed down before we went to sleep, but when we woke up the next morning our phones wouldn’t stop ‘cha-chinging’. We had sale after sale after sale - we had 200 sales come in within a 24 hour period. That’s when we realized this wasn’t slowing down.”

Now Tastely Box has already outgrown their brick-and-mortar storefront and hired three employees.

The Laneville’s have plans to put a warehouse somewhere nearby and expand their current location to better serve their in-person customers.

“As soon as we get boxes made they go right out the door.”

Polly says they have big plans for the new year, though she doesn’t want to give away any of their surprises.

Boxes can be ordered through their online shop, and bought at their store located at 10020 ON-28, Apsley.

If planning on ordering for Christmas the cutoff for delivery is Dec. 3.

Peterborough Public Health Announce Youth COVID-19 Vaccines Can Be Booked This Week

Peterborough Public Health announced today that booking will open on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. for youth aged five to 11 years to receive the paediatric COVID-19 vaccine at local clinics starting Nov. 29.

The provincial government announced on Friday that Health Canada has authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty for use in all children 5-11 years of age. In Ontario, all children born between 2010 and 2016 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dedicated vaccination clinics for children aged five to 11 years will be offered at the Healthy Planet Arena and in schools throughout the County and City of Peterborough. Residents over the age of 12 will not be able to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at these designated pediatric clinics.

“This is an exciting day. Vaccinating young residents is another huge step in protecting our community against COVID19,” said Dr. Ian Gemmill, Acting Medical Officer of Health. “Health Canada’s approval means that the vaccine is safe, effective and high-quality, and will ensure that these children also are protected from severe illness.”

Starting Tuesday, the provincial booking system will have appointments available for children aged five to 11 years, enabling parents and caregivers to book a local appointment for their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Appointments will be offered Mondays through Thursdays and on Saturdays at the Healthy Planet Arena, as well as at schools throughout the county and City of Peterborough over the coming weeks.

Residents can book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment:

• Online at covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/ OR

• Over the phone by calling the provincial vaccine booking call centre at 1-833-943-3900
